Bridgeport Ave. issue deferred, Village Council officers chosen

At the Village Council meeting last night, it was agreed that the Bridgeport traffic calming issue should go before the public at the next meeting on Dec. 18. The City and the County will receive a letter from the Village Council informing them that the issue will be discussed at the next meeting, which is televised from City Hall.

After the meeting, neighbors on both sides of the issue met outside, so hopefully they ironed some issues out that were coming between them.

The officers for next year were chosen, they are:
Chairman: Martin Zilber
Vice-Chair / Treasurer: Felice Dubin
Secretary: Liliana Dones
Sergeant at Arms: Gary Hecht

Love them all, but this is just juggling folks around, isn't there any new blood out there? I know people ask me to run, I don't know if they are joking or not, but I am more comfortable on this side, writing about the issues, rather than causing them.

Nothing was decided on adding a new member or an African American member from Village West.

Actually since the election 3 years ago there has been plenty of new blood. Alyn Pruett and I replaced Marc Sarnoff and the late Yvonne MacDonald. We were elected by the existing board from a pool of candidates that submitted their applications and were whittled down to 6 by a pre-selection committee.

Then when Ron left to join Sarnoff's office last year, Susy Weintraub was voted in from another pool of contenders. Now Susy is leaving because she is in the throes of law school, and night class schedule prohibits her from attending the VC meetings. So interested candidates can apply again. We will post the particulars on the Village Council website and send the blog the info as well.

That seat, and all the others are up for re-election in the fall so those of us who wish to continue to serve, as well as anyone else who wants to vie for one of the 9 seats, can campaign for it.

Eventhough seats are up for election it's always the same clan who vote for the "clan".

It seems that it would be good for the whole community if someone from West Grove were to become a member. There is strength in numbers, and having the entire Grove represented should be of benefit to the entire Grove.

Grape, last week we selected ne officers, which we do each year. Members of the Village Council are elected Grove-wide, our term is four years, and the next election will be next November. Vacancies are filled by appointment. I hope lots of people who are eager to serve our community run next year. The voters are all registered voters in the Grove.

Pogonip, I agree we need more representation from the Village West. We lost a great advocate for the Village West when Yvonne McDonald took a position with Commissioner Sarnoff's office and had to resign from the Village Council. We will be encouraging leaders from the Village West to apply to be appointed to Susie's seat. If you know of anyone you would recommend, or if you are from the Village West and are interested in applying, I hope you will.
