The Village Council is not the City Commission

It is apparent by the comments we get here, that some of you don't know the difference between the Village Council and the City Commission. The Village Council meets this Thursday. The City Commission met last week.

The Cocoanut Grove Village Council (Cocoanut is spelled the old-fashioned way) is an elected body of representatives who work to bring information as a liaison between Coconut Grove and the City of Miami and the City Commission which is an elected body of representatives who work for the entire city, including the Grove. City Commission only consists of one "Grove Commissioner," Marc Sarnoff, who is our district commissioner.

The Village Council consists of only Coconut Grove representatives and only deals with Coconut Grove issues, while the City Commission deals with all of Miami.

And therein lies the rub -- the City Commission does not usually have the best interests of the Grove in mind when making their decisions. While they have their offices at City Hall, which happens to be in Coconut Grove, the City Commission seems to be ad odds with what the Grove residents desire on a regular basis.

That's where the Village Council comes in. They try to smoothly sway the City Commission into doing what the Grove citizens' desire.

Oddly enough, they both share the same chambers at City Hall (on different times, of course) and they both have their meetings televised on cable channel 77 or streamed
here.

Last year the Coconut Grove Village Council voted to change the spelling of their name from Cocoanut to Coconut which is unfortunate because again we are taking away part of the old Grove as we knew it. Spelling it "Cocoanut" gives the Grove a certain flavor or flavour.
