If you like him then you shoulda put a ring on him

Word on the street is that some folks in the Grove would like County Commissioner Carlos Gimenez to run for Miami Mayor when Manny Diaz is gone. I am told he is on the fence on this issue and just needs a little nudge.

So far Tomas Regalado and perhaps Joe Sanchez would be the nominees.

Any thoughts?

So far our mayoral slate is not too enticing. Let's hope some new blood steps up. We have the same old tired blood and the cream is not coming to the top. There must be someone out there that will listen to the people who elect them and not put photo ops and ribbon cuttings before all else.

What does it say about Miami that a smart, gifted, and inspiring candidate does not run for mayor (or anything else)?

Look at who we've had lately: Diaz, Corollo, Suarez, & Clark. No fresh ideas from any of them.

Imagine if Miami was well known as the friendly city or the clean city or something like that. What if somebody took a stand against poverty?

Tomas Regalado would be the people's mayor. He has continuously voted to protect the residents of this city. Has voted for bad projects and has looked out for our pocket book knowing very well the other commissioners would make him look bad. He has stood alone for us for too long. Why is it so hard to accept him as our mayor and would rather want someone that you really don't know what debt and to whom is behind them?

I am torn by this, as I am sure Mr. Gimenez is as well. I would like to see him run the City again, and it is clear that he had more to do with the City's recovery than any one. Manny Diaz has lived off of the great platform that Gimenez left for him. Problem is that he could do so much more as County Mayor in 2012, seeing that the County has a real strong Mayor form of Government, and frankly, the City is still much better off than the County.

Regalado is not the people's representative, he is a demagauge, pure and simple. He is a problem person, not a solutions person.. I have never heard a constructive idea come out of the man's head. All negative. That is not leadership! We need a Mayor with vision.. I am not saying Joe is any better by the way.

I believe that FIU is working on a poll for City Mayor, including Tomas, Joe and Carlos. It will be released in January. The results will likely sway Gimenez one way or another. His heart is in the City, and he truly loves it. He would be the best Mayor that we have had in a very, very long time. He is fair, keeps an open mind, thinks outside of the box, and has a vision for Miami that goes beyond development. We would be lucky if he comes back..

But, if he can stay at the County, keep the County administration's feet on the fire, and take over in 4 years, I would be happy with that as well.. The Police Chief in Mayor's clothing has done nothing but exacerbate the situation that Penelas left at the County. Strong Mayor?? Right, more like visionless hack with lap dog Burgess licking his toes!!!

He isn't really different from the other commissioners at all, he is just better at hiding it.

None of these County Commissioners or City of Miami politicians will ever do a good job at looking out for the best interests of the Village of Cocoanut Grove, its residents and numerous visitors.

How many more decades of proof will we need to realize that? They just appoint aloof and clueless District Commissioners like Sarnoff from their High Towers, and are totally out of touch regarding local Grove matters. The Comsisioners then also mess up (I could list at least a dozen of concrete, recent examples in detail), and we all lose.

Until the Grove becomes it's own City, it doesn't really matter who's the next City Major, Cement Manny, this guy Gimenez or that other dude Regalado. Same difference as far as the Grove is concerned.

Carlos.

Apathy and shame is truly a logical reaction to the death stranglehold of Miami politics. The only way to wash the trash is for the FBI to come in and local newcomers take the lead.

As for vision and great ideas...Carlos Gimenez was the one that came up with the fire fee tax. Being a fireman himself, he thought it would be great to double bill the taxpayers! No thank you.

The FIRE FEE!
Jesus, everyone likes to mention Regalado's gas card but no one mentions the unconstitutional Fire fee? The one that Regalado fought?
Come on guys does anyone remember the past ten years of City politics?
Ok "new blood"
We need someone new with new fresh ideas that is not poisoned by politics.
I remember the same war cry 8 years ago! We elected Manny Diaz!!!! How did that turn out?
Regalado is on the radio and tv all the time, he is not in this for fame. Hes not in it for the money, he wanted to lower the salary of the Mayor.
Have any of you ever been in his office?
The guy has Carollo's furniture from 15 years ago! He's as frugal as they come.
He has backed every single increase of firefighters and police, gone against every tax increase and has backed public works and solid waste. He was the only representative from the city of miami to go up to Tallahassee to plead for the property tax.

Do you guys see a pattern?

He votes no on the big expensive projects that we dont need and votes yes on sidewalks, trash pickup, more cops, more firefighters, and less taxes.

Look Im not saying Regalado is perfect but at least we know what were getting.
Joe

We could certainly do worse than either Gimenez or Regalado, if they become the choices. It's nice to talk about "new blood," but the reality is that the Grove is not the center of the political universe for the city or the county.

Tony:

I don't know anybody who's in favor of poverty. Do you?

Fire fee, lets talk about the fire fee, because clearly, simple minded people don't really understand the rational. The City of Miami, at the time, was going through a severe funding shortage. A larger percentage of the City of Miami is tax-exempt (government (County/State/Federal) and Non-for-Profits, such as churches and the like). The fire fee was an attempt to levy fees on several tax-exempt properties in order to increase revenue, but, not adversely impact the taxpayer. The milage rate was reduced for those that paid taxes already, more than enough to cover the cost of the "fire fee" and traditional non-tax-paying uses in the City were charged with a fee, offsetting the inherent inequity being the municipality with the most "untaxable" property per capita in the State of Florida. Please!! Wake up and smell the roses!! Regalado is nothing more than a nay-saying problem finding malcontent, who has no ideas for the past, present or future.
