Should Ransom Everglades be allowed to add signage?
Ransom Everglades Middle School has just completed contruction on their new administration and gymnasium buildings and they want to add a big round seal on the face of the building. It won't light up, it's just a big round aluminum thing, but I remember when people didn't know that they were passing a school, it blended in so well on South Bayshore Drive and on Tigertail, now they just want to "announce" themselves.
While it's understandable that the school wants to have their name and slogan up, many residents are against the Class II permit allowing the signage, they feel that subtle is better in this area -- it's a neighborhood, not a business district.
I am not sure what to make of the sign, but I do think that Ransom needs to cover themselves up with lots of foliage and blend in better with the neighborhood. That ugly metal fence on South Bayshore stands out too much and takes away form the nice high coral ridge and the guardhouse and gates on Tigertail make it too institutional for the neighborhood.

I AGREE !
I strongly disagree. Schools around the country have signage indicating their presence. Schools are also located in residential districts 99.9% of the time. A nice sign on the side of the school would look nice and neighbors really shouldnt complain about that.
you're acting like schools are not part of what makes the fabric of a neighborhood. they are, and if you look at any school in miami-dade, they all have signage, even in more residential areas. it sounds like this sign will be pretty tasteful. must people take issue with every little thing??
Right, but the sign for the precious Barnacle you took a pic of below is somehow better than a school sign? Come on already...
I think this is the most ridiculous argument ever. This is a SCHOOL. Not only is it a school, it's one of if not the best in Dade county or all of South Florida. Yes it's located in a neighborhood. Where else are schools located? When you pass by Ransom you wonder what the heck is this huge building? At least having one school logo would identify it to visitors. If you ask me it is a beautiful construction considering it is a school. They have great colors-green and blue and they put the fence up on Bayshore for security. I think it looks great. I would be proud to have Ransom in my neighborhood!
A small sign would be nice. They already have the reputation of excellence and it's very competitive to get into - so advertising is really not an issue. Identification is fine. My house numbers are 4" tall. That does the trick. Bigger is not necessarily better. My College had a small plague on their main entrance that was very tasteful. Like I said, if you are already riding on the laurels of excellence, it's really not about advertising, but identification. I hope they consider this and don't fall into the Miami ostentation.
LARGE OR SMALL...SIGNAGE IN A RESIDENTAL NEIGHBORHOOD ?...COME ON! THIS IS AN EXCELLENT SCHOOL ,WELL KNOWN.....SUBDUED IS MUCH BETTER ! IT FITS WITH EXCELLENCE !
Anon 1:37pm,
What's with all those capital letters?
"SUBDUED IS MUCH BETTER! IT FITS WITH EXCELLENCE!"
Here's your word for the day: OXYMORON!!!
yeah, Anon 1:37 needs to have his head examined. Bitching about a school sign in general is pretty ridiculous and sad. Just another classic Grove whiner.
TO 'GET A GRIP'......HERES YOUR WORD FOR THE DAY....'GET A GRIP'
A couple of issues:
(1) The Sign: Not an issue. It is composed of a seal and the name of the school. No lights, and it will be placed on the new building, which is at least 100 ft from Tigertail. In reality, you will only see it if you are entering the campus from Tigertail, unless you snap your head over as you drive by.
(2) Fence on the Bluff: Unfortunately, because the folks at the Hermitage do not allow their maids and servants to park within the Hermitage, most had taken to parking on the swail on Ransom's side of Bayshore Drive. those cars were stacking, and even negatively affecting the bluff. The fence needed to go up to protect the bluff.
