Obama rally in the Grove?

My friend Meredith wants to hold an Obama rally somewhere in the Grove, but she isn't sure if there is any interest. I was telling her I saw a huge rally this past weekend in Coral Gables on Miracle Mile, there must have been hundreds of people with signs, parading up and down.

If anyone is interested in organizing a rally with Meredith, please contact her here

How about a McCain-Palin rally in the Grove? That would really run counter to the social mainstream here in the community & really isn't that what the Grove is all about?

Or does that kind of thinking clash with your belief and values system? Maybe then everything is not relative.

Are you kidding me? Please let's not turn "Our Grove" into a political rally. Let's stick to what we do best, arts festivals and food festivals. If we want to do politics let's leave it to The King Mango Strut.

Supporters of Obama may wish to organize with the Obama Offices in Coral Gables on Miracle Mile just North West of John Martins or in Coconut Grove on Grand Ave just South East of Douglas Road.

I'm sorry to offend all of you. I was planning on going to the coral gables office but before hand I wanted to know if there was interest among community members in the grove.

Please excuse me for trying to use the modern thing called the social network to try to connect with other interested parties in the community.

I thought other people might be interested: I guess I was wrong.

Oh ok lets kick out of the Grove the Political people because we don't want Politics in the Grove (cuz their isn't any now right?) While we are kicking people out lets kick out people on Golf carts, skaters, people who look different and want to do their laundry in laundry marts. Lets kick out the peacocks too. Shall we add anything else to the list?

People who cut down trees and people with trees that shed too many flowers, palm fronds, fruit, coconuts, etc. Also, people who live in new houses and townhouses, and people who live in crappy old houses and don't landscape their yards. And don't forget bikers who run down people walking and running and drivers who run down bikers.

Meredith,

I am with you! I'll send you an email soon. Are you people crazy? If you want your precious arts festivals than you better get political! Ever heard about the importance of governmental support for the arts? There is a new Obama campaign office on Miracle Mile. That is a good place to start but there is nothing wrong with a little action in the Grove. I thought that the Grove was about freedom of expression, free thought, community organization. If you don't get out there and vote and get excited about this election, than you have no right to complain. Heck, if you want to do an Obama/Biden rally on Saturday and a McCain/Palin (or is it Palin/McCain) rally on Sunday, than even better. Last I checked, Miami and Coconut Grove were still part of a democracy. Sometimes I am really sadden by the apathy in Miami.

Just in the past two days, I've counted 14 Obama stickers / yard signs and only 3 for McCain. Not that that means much, but still.

Oh, and 0 for Bush. Where did they all go?

I don't think there's much doubt that the Grove is pretty heavily Democrat-leaning. My neighbors haven't had me over for dinner ever since they found out I was a Republican. It's reactions like that which tend to keep us in the closet.

But counting bumper stickers doesn't tell you much. Many of us prefer to make our statement in the voting booth. And I've never heard of anybody being swayed by a bumper sticker or a yard sign.

Agreed with you on the bumper stickers, swlip. Voting is a personal freedom that doesnt need to be broadcast to the world. Plus, sometimes it invites negativity towards that particular person. I do get a laugh out of the people who put bumper stickers up and then leave them there after their candidate loses though haha.

Having a rally shouldnt be discouraged though. Again, we're talking personal freedoms. I really cant seem to grasp why so many people in Miami have to bitch about the activities of others. Just let it go already, your life will not be changed by a few neighbors supporting a political candidate for one damn day. Anon at 9:59am and 10:44am cracked me up too haha!

heh, I've never heard of anyone being swayed by a political ad either, but if you look at the statistical effects they do work.

This is a CRITICAL!!!! election. Anyone who doesn't see the importance of this just isn't paying attention. Rally’s are designed to engage the community and bring in potential voters. Florida is a battle ground state. There is nothing wrong with getting out there and spreading the word. Voting can be personal (no one is forcing you to get out on the street and rally) but why shouldn't people be moved to motivate in these uncertain times? No one should be embarrassed to be a democrat or a republican - that is if we are really behind your candidate and can actually explain why. That being said, we should all REALLY strive to work together to make the Grove and this country a better place. This election will be over in 6 weeks and we can all be strongly behind our candidate while at the same time knowing the importance of a united community.

I disagree. If you're not embarrassed to be a Republican by now, you gotta be shameless.

GREAT IDEA!
We should do it the same day as the debate – which I think is this Friday? Just post the time and place, so Republicans are forewarned and can stay safely in their closets.

Plan it. Do it!

Coconut Grove sure ain't no Berkeley. Since when did loud mouthed Americans get so afraid to be outspoken - especially about one of the most significant and positive movements in a long long time.

Any building near the waterfront, signage on schools, chain restaurants, any restaurant not named Focaccia, gas stations who dont stock enough gas, diarrhea, cheap diners that serve high cholestorol lard food and dont have sandwich makers from the old school, the boat ramp, the area between the Fresh Market and the angler shop, Obama rallies, Cocowalk management and their lackies, and the Bookstore (just kidding about that last one!! LOL!)

It is sad that people are trying to intimidate others because of their political or religious views. Is it not this the "Home of the Free and the Land of the Brave"? Many people have died in this soil and also on foreign soil for all of us to be able to have freedom of speech and expression. The USA is a melting pot, where in any given day, you'll strike a conversation with someone who might either be Catholic, Muslim, Agnostic, Atheist, etc. The same goes for politics. Please let us stop this insanity and come together as a community, and if someone wants to have a rally for Obama or for McCain they should be able to do so with out any kind of repercutions.
