Are people even buying luxury cars these days?

Code Enforcement agrees that the car dealership that set up shop on South Dixie is in violation of zoning rules.

Elite Luxury Rent-A-Car at 2500 South Dixie Hwy. will be fined daily until they stop selling the cars. It was determined that they are a commercial business conducting business in an office zoned property.

The owners of Elite denied it. Phantom Properties is the owner (out of the Dominican Republic).
They said they are an office that arranges luxury packages that include cars, boats, airplanes and such and that their cars are not being rented from that location but from another office elsewhere.

Phantom Properties sent someone to the hearing, that honestly had nothing to do with the case, he seems to have been handy and was not an attorney or owner of the dealership. Guess they felt the would gamble and apparently they lost.

I have mixed feelings about this because I don't understand why South Dixie which has all sorts of businesses, can't have a luxury car business. (I know this wasn't zoned for it). But I guess with the economy the way it is today, no one is probably buying the luxury cars anyway.

I think it's pretty crappy that thanks to someone who has absolutely nothing to do with the business or even own a business brought this matter forth. The Grove should be happy they have people who actually want to have a business here. Really!!!!

Yes new businesses are desired in Coconut Grove as long as they are legal.
All business that respect and comply with our zoning codes are most welcome.
If they do not, then they are not welcome.
The owner of this property, city code enforcement and most residence of Coconut Grove only desire what is best for Coconut Grove and that includes businesses (and residence) that respect and comply with our laws.

THis is just another classic example of people in South Florida having a problem with things that other people do which have little or no relevance to their daily lives. How does this business negatively impact the Grove?? I also doubt they are renting cars from that location seeing as the business is located on a street where cars whiz by doing 40-65mph and the lot has no parking lot for potential customers.

Why is this business bothersome to anyone? Are your lives really that boring? Let it go already. There are thousands more things to worry about that are far more important than a stupid luxury car rental business on US-1.

They said they also rent bodyguards in their luxury packages - maybe they should put them in the parking lot as well. Why do we have laws if they are not adhered to? Don't you remember Home Depot; they wanted to put a 133,000 sq. ft industrial warehouse in a light commercial zoning district and take the grocery story? If people don't pay attention to the zoning laws, the Grove could end up looking like Hialeah. Some people just think they are exempt from following the law.

Hi Blindman et al. One problem with zoning laws is that they are not good at discriminating between uses. If this place is allowed to stay then what if another car "dealer" etc wanted to come in with a large lot. Or what if we end up with some streets like NE 76th (I think is one) also SW 8th ST where there are small car dealership one right after the other. How can you decide who gets to stay and who doesn't? You would think that anyone with a proper business plan would check on zoning conditions before they open shop. HD should have done that before they tried to force their way into our area.

That doesn't make any sense at all. What about the Lexus dealership further south? Is Lexus not luxury enough?

Even if the law applied to renting cars and not selling, then we would have to worry about Enterprise Rent-a-car and others just down the street.

Ridiculous.
