What's up with the "bike in"?
The security guards are pretty nasty at CocoWalk and I'm not sure how things will work out if a group of people show up to threaten them. I think the only reasonable person at CocoWalk these days is Mia Steirheim, leasing manager. Perhaps if a small group or even one or two people speak with her, things may change. She always comes across as very reasonable and as a board member on the Chamber of Commerce, her goal is to bring business in, not threaten the customers.
In these days of high gas prices and environmental awareness, the easiest thing that CocoWalk could do in going green is to simply install bike racks in convenient places or at least not torment those who want to ride into town and not drive. A bike or two chained to a pole is sort of quaint and actually adds to the ambiance of the area. It doesn't hurt the image of CocoWalk, it actually enhances the place and makes it more "user friendly" and "homey."
I think they want to be too sterile these days, which in turn keeps people away. CocoWalk is supposed to be fun and inviting, not threatening.

Hope it happens. I'll show up with my bike just to see what happens.
I hope it happens to. Security acted like so what make my day we do what we want around here. And that is just wrong. Did anyone investigate if Cocowalk even had the right to remove those bikes? Was the bike on Public property or tied to public property? Because IF it was to me it would seem they would not be allowed to remove anything. I hate to see people act like bullies especially to kids it just gives kids a bad example on how to behave. They should be ashamed of themselves.
The sidewalk in front of CocoWalk is public property. if you look closely, you will see a line in the brick pattern. You may want to stay off the CocoWalk property itself, but a nice gaggle of bikes on the puiblic right of way would be sweet.
PS: Someone should alert the press that this is afoot.
The "press" (The Grapevine) is all over it thanks. They have been alerted and were the ones to post the thing in the first place.
Anon 12:22,
You are right on the mark about the Grape being all over this issue and other community concerns as well. No disrespect at all was intended with the suggestion that "someone should alert the press". I simply thought the pinhead management at CocoWalk might be additionally impressed by some TV type stalking the halls looking for comments from Rick Torres. Naturally, we would expect the Grape to post pix of the whole shebang.
What time is it at? Ill show up
I don't think it will do much good without having a group "lock-in". Lock all of the bikes together (bring a lock you're willing to sacrifice) and videotape the results.
Don't be confrontational.
The Grapevine is all over this issue which is a great thing. As a cyclist and a grove resident I am furious that given the amount of taxes I pay to the city of miami that there are only a couple of tiny bike racks near Cocowalk. And when I have tried to lock my bike there they have had Vespas and other motorbikes chained all around them. With all of the cyclists in the grove it is unbelievable that even the chamber of commerce doesn't have bike racks. I would be more than happy to discuss bike rack situation at Cocowalk with Mia Steirheim. How can I best contact her? Also, Marc Sarnoff should be aware. Surely with all of the money wasted in this city a little could be spared to put in some bike racks on city property in the grove. Really...useless information booths a higher priority than bike racks???
Geez grape, don't be timid, this is the kind of issue that calls for some civil action! No one has to make threats or be nasty to get the point across. Actions speak louder than words. Cocowalk took action when they cut off those bikes instead of resorting to a verbal or written warning. Now we should take action to show them that cyclists should have their place in Cocowalk and the Grove. It's the friendliest, cheapest form of transport there is. What I save on gas and parking by biking to Cocowalk, I can spend in the stores and restaurants there. That is, if they don't drive me away with their totalitarian policies!
Let's show up with our bikes!! But let's be civil, no "critical mass" type of thing, just to show that bikes matter, racks are needed, peacefully. I'll be there
