No need to have a "bike in" -- case solved
I did go looking for the sign about not parking your bikes at CocoWalk and couldn't find it. I asked a few people who work there and they didn't have a clue either. So perhaps the next step is getting signs that even the employees are aware of.
But anyway, again, a protest and "bike in" is not needed. CocoWalk has contacted me and they say that bike racks were ordered months ago and will be in stalled later this month.

The boy got HIS lock back, but what about the problem with the lack of racks? And what's the policy going to be for the future?
So maybe it'll just be a coincidence if a bunch of bikes show up on the PUBLIC sidewalk on front of CocoWalk on Tuesday at 6:30 pm?
huh? a little critical mass tomorrow afternoon? Hope every one in on their best behavior
Do they discuss why they think they have the right to even have a sign that say's you can't chain your bike to the pole. The city might have the right to do it but I doubt they do.
I think a little show of strength on behalf of the bike community might be a good thing anyway.
In this day and age with Gas and the economy the way it's been they should be adding extra bike rack's and encouraging their use.
Either way the Community owes you a big thank you Grape for bringing thing's like this to our attention.
Oh, the bike racks were ordered months ago? Do you not mean hours ago, due to the backlash this has caused? Months ago, who are they kidding? They need some community service training at CocoWalk.
It seems like it would be a good idea for CocoWalk to have a small section of the parking garage dedicated to bike parking.
So how many CocoWalk property managers does it take to screw in the light bulb that says don't hassle the bikers until you get the damn racks installed? I for one will be there at 6:30 pm Tuesday to see the bike-in that ain't happening.
If you have a bike, you need the bike rack out front where everyone can see it. Someone can steal your bike if its hidden away in the garage or on Virginia Street. Right out in front is where it should be. Then others might think "hey, maybe I'll ride my bike next time".
See ya at 6:30.
It seems no matter the Grove's attempts, this peaceful protest will happen...For edification purposes, critical mass is an organized protest for adding bike lanes in major metropolitan areas. It's done at high traffic times and when fulfilling their mission, the bikers essentially block all traffic. Often bikers are arrested for disturbing the peace, etc. I don't think that's what's happening in this situation.
My understanding here, is this is a protest against property managers who don't acknowledge bikes as a means of transportation and thus don't accommodate them and in fact eradicate them. By a show of numbers, this group hopes to prove an essetiallness in the community. So bike over, stay calm, and socialize...I'm assuming on the public sidewalk near the new Starbucks?
Ugh - I goofed on Critical Mass - it's an intentionally disorganized statement that bicycles are here to stay...that happens on the last Friday of the month in multiple cities during rush hour. I witnessed some scary moments in San Francisco when I lived there, so I am just hyper cautious about it.
I highly suggest that anyone who has had such troubles speak to Dave Collins...quality of life do mean a lot to him, he loves the Grove and would probably have a talk with Cocowalk about their behavior
What everyone here is forgetting is that it's not Mr. Torres' policy to not allow bikes at Cocowalk. It is the policy of the Owners. He is just following orders, in other words, he is just doing his job!
So anonymous 7:22...what do you suggest?
Anon 7:27
Here's a suggestion. Torres calls the Owners and explains that they have stepped in a big pile with this idiot policy. Then he requests permission to give the kid his 65 bucks back. Next he requests permission to issue a press release claiming that bike racks have been on order for god-knows-how-long and by miraculous coincidence will arrive and be installed this very month.
That's what I'd suggest.
As a regular biker from S.Bayshore drive, off road and road bikes, (plus the car which I use a little as possible), there's got to be a better understanding between pedestrians, bikers and car drivers in our communities.
Bikes should respect the traffic laws more carefully. Yeah, I've often ridden in those kamikazee pelotons you see all over the place down to Biscayne Bay, S. Beach or Homestead. They often break the traffic rules and some drivers get angry, sometimes justifiably so.
But many of us just try to "share the road". That means give some space for everyone, bikers can't use all lanes, cars can give us some space on the right, say hello, smile, and some freakin' parking bike racks. Respect goes both ways.
