Is Code Enforcement too slow on tree massacres?

Lilliana Dones, Village Council member, spoke at last Thursday's meeting about the problems with developers and the lack of responsiveness with Code Enforcement on tree cuttings.

The developers and other residents know that if they get the massacre done quickly, there is nothing they have to do except pay a fine. If they are building multi million dollar projects, a few thousand dollars in fines is just part of doing business. This is all a big joke.

More than just fines need to be put in place, I don't know what, maybe jail time -- is that too extreme? As slow as Code Enforcement may seem, they really can't be all places at all times, especially late at night and early morning hours when most of these anti-green jerks chop up the trees on purpose.

I think that if a developer willfully violates a law such as this one, their building permit should be immediately revoked, pending an investigation. If the investigation finds they did violate the law, the permitting process must start from scratch, with a new burden of mitigating their earlier violation.

Oh, stopping the project dead and making them re-apply will cost lots of money? Boo hoo.

I'm with CLJ. It's never made sense to me that willful violators are allowed to keep their permits.

I think building permits should be completely denied to obvious violators - mostly renegade developers who think they have the right to destroy the tree canopy for their benefits.

I bet they will only have to make an example of a few violators before people understand that the Grove is serious about maintaining the beautiful environment that is slowly being eroded away by unscrupulous developers. Perhaps the Post Office should have their permit revoked for destroying the mature mahogany and oak trees that once shaded the parking lot? Is the Federal government exempt?
