Pigs

Although just a few business do this (we all know who they are), all businesses received this letter from the NET office today:

"This letter is being written to advise you that it has been brought to our attention that after staff cleans the gutter in front of your place of business that your maintenance staff is throwing the trash unto the streets again. It is imperative that the joint effort we had in the past be fortified by combining our efforts again. Please advise your maintenance staff that they are to pickup the trash on the sidewalk and that they are not to throw it unto the street or gutter, as per City of Miami Code, Section 22-5 (attached), which states in part: “…Every merchant, storekeeper or operator of a business in the city shall sweep or cause to be swept as often as necessary to keep the sidewalks adjoining his respective place of business before 10:00 am every morning, or as often as necessary to keep the area clean, on each day that such business shall be operated. Said sweepings shall be picked up and not swept in gutter.”

Please be advised that the Department of Solid Waste and NET maintains and coordinates the cleaning of the streets Monday through Friday beginning at 3:00 a.m. They clean the gutters before the cars start to come into the area for breakfast and other businesses. We will be having inspectors monitor the business areas. Failure to comply with the provisions of this section shall constitute a violation and serve as the basis for the assessment of a fine."

I don't think the letter will work because the offending parties never see themeslves, but I have seen so many slobs do this, just sweep everthing into the street. Maybe Harry needs to get out there again and take some photos of the offending slobs.

I have an idea--how about Gottlieb stops taking pics of trash at 7 AM and instead takes pics of the places getting broken into and other things that are more important. It clearly states we have until 10 AM to clear all trash and anything before that is not our fault.

Anon 4:25,
Had you bothered to actually read and comprehend the notice, you might have stumbled upon the part that says "or as often as necessary to keep the area clean".

Seems pretty self-defeating to mail it to EVERY business and not specific businesses that do throw trash in the gutter. Especially after the first paragraph clearly states that your staff is doing that.

If I were one of the innocent businesses I would definitely complain to the mayor.

Sorry, but they come across as amateurish.

There are restaurants and bars in Coconut Grove that are responcible members of our community. Those that are not are doing a great disservice to all of us. There is no excuse for a person to litter on our Coconut Grove streets. There is even less excuse for a business to not clean up after their customers before they close for the night. All it takes is for them to send a couple of guys out onto the street around Last Call to police the immediate neighborhood in front of their establishment. I bet that plenty of customers would be even eager to help with the clean up if one of your good looking female employees came outside and asked for their cooperation. The sidewalk and street could soon be spotless. Please collect the discarded napkins, plastic cups, beer bottles and flyers. This task is the responsibility of the night crew and must not be left until your morning crew arrives at 10 AM the next day. Close your trash bin so it does not remain open all night and invite unwanted critters. Bag the refuse properly so that smelly liquids do not drain onto the sidewalks and into our streets. This task could be made easier if you and/or the city supplied trash and recyclable bottle bins outside your establishment. You don't need a letter from the city to remind you what needs to be done. You know wahy is needed. Don’t just clean up the street because it’s the law, clean up your street because it reflects upon you and it is the right thing to do. Thanks for helping to keep Coconut Grove a great place to live, work and visit, for all of us! - Harry Emilio Gottlieb
