Keep the Expo Center for the last phase. Let them film as long as possible. Makes sense. When the time comes (phase 4), then knock the expo center down.

Makes no sense to knock down the center and have an emptly lot sitting there for years, when it is actually serving a useful purpose now. If the production company and tv show don't mind the rickety place, why do Dave Collins and Marc Sarnoff who already have screwed over the Grove with their black empty kiosks and other hair brained schemes.

HANDS OFF DAVE. HANDS OFF MARC. GO GET A LIFE YOU TWO!

Dave is on my s--t list and so is Marc. I won't vote for Marc again and I won't cooperate with the BID. They are two selfish punks always out for their own interests.

What is the rush to tear down the expo center? It's been there 50 years, can't it stay a few more months or until Burn Notice is done using it?

According to a recent Herald article, the City is charging Burn Notice only $6,500 per month for the Expo Center. That is chump change for soundstage space, and it is unfairly competing with privately-owned studios that charge about 10 times that much.

Sorry, but much as enjoy the t.v. show, I don't see why we should be subsidizing the producers' bottom line.

I note that many commenters on this same blog are (properly) aghast at public funding for sports stadiums. What's the difference?

Well, that is not really the issue now. The issue is that Burn Notice didn't have other options when they started and the City took them in and gave them the space.

The park project will take years to complete, so why knock down the one thing that is drawing interest and money to the Grove when there are 4 phases. Why not leave it for phase 4 and not just knock the place down to "Make a show of it," or whatever they said it would be.

You know and I know the city will sit on this project for years, in the meantime, Burn Notice can bring business and publicity and jobs to the Grove rather than sit as an empty lot while things are sorted out.

It is not just the $6,500 they pay for rent but they also pay for utilities and anything that is in disrepair. It is rented AS IS. They have fixed the roof, the AC and many other problems that occurred. And the PR impact it has had on Miami and the Grove! These film people are excited to be in the Grove. Spend time talking with them - see how thrilled they are to be here. Promo is all over the country for this series. Let's keep the Expo Center up and running as long as we can.

SWLIP, the plain fact of the matter is that without the deal, the producers would have shot in LA, or Vancouver, or Toronto, or NY, where the infrastructure for filming is much better, and the weather demons aren't always breathing down their necks.

It is very difficult to shoot around summer thunderstorms and humidity, and if you think it's hard to find insurance for your home in "hurricane alley", try finding production insurance.

I used to work in the business, so I know, believe me. I also know what a fickle industry it is, and that all of the goodwill you will get from Hollywood for stalling a public beautification project would be worth about a nickel.

That's not to say that I would be in any rush to shut down the place. I just don't think that it should be a primary consideration.

The goodwill we are getting now is publicity and money. We use them, they use us. The way the world turns, but some idiots here want to knock down the goose that is laying the golden eggs so an empty pile of dirt can sit there for years. Something like the post office.

I say delay the demolition until phase four. Then knock down the expo center taking Burn Notice with it.

If this Expo-Center-as-film-studio vs waterfront park land thing is going to continue to be an issue, (and I predict it will for at least another couple weeks, since the Grove loves a good debate in which opposite sides can rake each other through the mud), then some things need to be straight:

1. Anon of 1:22 pm: Expo Center has not been there for 50 years. I saw many concerts at "Dinner Key" in the 70s, in what was then the couple of rickety hangers now encompassed by the rickety Expo Center. (In fact, if we are going to mis-inform, I think the subsequent "Expo" Center got its name because of the Jim Morrison Concert).

2. Anon of 3:07 pm: The Burn Notice and Marley crew did not "fix" the AC. They rented huge portable units to tube it in, which provides beacoup bucks to the company that rents out the portable AC units, which unfortunate to our local economy, is not located within the Grove BIC district.

3. All other Anons making vast claims on how much revenue Burn Notice is actually pumping into the Grove: Specifically, how much? Of the local jobs, how many are "Grove jobs?" How many hotel rooms got booked? Do the actors live here? Eat here? Is the catering company from the Grove? From the City of Miami, even?

Don't get me wrong. There is no denying that filming a show on location in Miami is a great marketing opportunity. I think the EC has been put to great use while the Sailing Club, Shake a leg and Sailing Center duked it out with the City over the changes they did not like, and there may not be the need to knock down the thing right away, thus giving time to finding a more suitable location than on the waterfront. -- Margot Channing

This picture is from 1961, so the Expo Center is what? 47 years old? Give or take a year? http://coconutgrovegrapevine.blogspot.com/2008/03/dinner-key-circa-1961.html

Anon of 4:57 pm: The picture from '61 is of what was then called "Dinner Key Auditorium"

Like I said it did not become the "Expo" Center until after the Jim Morrison expo incident in 1969. -MC

Len Scinto:

Quick comment...I have said before that the coast should be open and I still think so. I also think the EC should be taken down at the most efficient time i.e. if it is fiscally responsible to let it stand until filming is done then so be it. I just want to commend Margot for reutrning some civility to this discussion. I personally know both Marc and David...You may not alsways agree with them ...as I certainly don't but calling people punks and other derogatory things really cheapens any validity your arguments may have. Let's counter ideas with ideas like rational adults. and as it states above ...my name is Len Scinto...just so you know I'm not anonymous.

Why lose money tearing it down in Phase4.
Let Burn Notice BLOW it up when their done.
Great for the show, and it will save on demolition.

Margot, that is not where the Expo Center got its name. Expo is short for EXPOSITION. There are many cities that have an Expo Center. Creative try though...

Blind mind, apparently you did not read fully what I said, which was "...if we are going to mis-inform, I think the subsequent "Expo" Center got its name because of the Jim Morrison Concert..."

I figured since there is so much misinformation circulating about this otherwise boring building, we may as well throw in a fun one. -- Margot Channing

The plan is to replace the Expo Center with a 3 story parking garage at a cost of $25 mil. - how does that not block the waterfront?

Burn Notice is great. Don't get upset about the fact they can afford to film in a nice area - if you could buy a house in a nice town for a lot less than the other houses, would you turn down the offer because it wasn't good for competition?
