New trees -- some like them, some hate them

Some people have asked me about the trees on Grand Avenue, you know the news ones they put in up and down the street.

Many don't like them. They feel they are too wide and take up space on the sidewalk, you can see above, there isn't much room to walk. Also, they don't like the little yellow flowers that keep falling all over the place.

These trees along the post office sidewalk are better than the mess left at the post office lot and while they do take up sidewalk room, they do beautify the area.

Many like palm trees. They feel they are prettier and they say Florida, but I can understand that falling coconuts may be a problem and cities like to avoid that situation. But being that we are "Coconut" Grove. Maybe some coconut palms might be in order. Look how pretty this one below is.

In fact, the tree below has its coconuts right there over South Bayshore Drive, just daring anyone to drive under them.

if those are the kind of tree's that grow i'm sure in a few years their canopy will be much higher, and much nicer, and out of the way. should be nice.

i think these are mostly Glaucous cassia. Info about them can be found on DERMS tree info. But these are really nice little trees to have in the urban environment. The don't get very tall (15 - 20') so they can be planted under powerlines. They are fast growing , so the canopy should be out of the way in a few years. They are a major attractor of butterflies and therefore help increase urban biodiversity. i am not completely sure about this but they are native to the Caribbean so cultural they might be appropriate to the Grove. larger tree might have been planted, thus avoiding the canopy in the face problem, but smaller trees actually have a greater survivorship as they can more readily become accustomed to their transplanted environment.

Plant a tree --- It's all good!

Hilarious that people are complaining about the trees--which will obviously grow--rather than the 0-foot-setback chainlink fence.

Personally, I feel that instead of complaining about trees being planted, people should be complaining about the sidewalks not being widened to create a more pedestrian friendly environment.

South Florida is becoming enough of a concrete jungle, bring on more trees!

It's absolutely amazing to read someone might actually whine about the type of tree that was planed along Grand Avenue. What's next, you don't like the color of the flowers? I, for one, am palm crazy - love them all, but you just don't get the shade canopy we need so desperately on sunny days from a few underwater palms.
