Gas stations in the Grove

The BP gas station on Bird and 27th is always out of gas. Three times in two weeks I have tried to get gas and have ended up with none. Everyone is now going over to the Shell station on 27th and US1 and that place is packed. With the gas prices as high as they are these days, it's a shame that BP is losing out on the windfall.

Ironically, BP's prices were very much more higher than Shell's, so it's nice to see that Shell is not gouging and taking advantage of the situation.

You are perpetuating a myth. Contrary to popular and politician opinions, margins for gasoline is much lower than most businesses. It breakdows roughly as follows:

20% State and Federal taxes
10% Distribution & marketing
10% Refining costs and profits
59& Crude Oil

To me it is astounding that oil companies receive the wrath that they do. They are going to very dangerous places in the world, transporting it across oceans and refining into a higly flameable substance and making it available to you & me at Shell and apparently only sometimes at BP.

It is interesting to note that the government takes more than the refiner & nobody seem complains about this fact or wants to haul congress up to an intense grilling.

I guess we all feel more comfortable blaming "big corporations" for the problem of gasoline and lack of it when in fact it is the government who will not permit us to develop our own sources of oil here in the USA. It is Macro-economic malpractice.

Okay, so those are the facts mixed with my opinion. I have lit the match on the gas (no pun intended) now let's here from all the hippies tell us that we need to conserve and sacrafice our lifestyle, blah, blah, blah!

The windfall comment is so trite and cliche. Anyone who's read up on the topic lately knows that gas stations, per se, make literally a few pennies per gallon as revenues.

Most gas stations make more money on food, drinks and sundries than on gasoline.

The ones that don't make more profit on that, make it on repair services (though those are few and far between)

But it is safe to say that 99% of gas stations don't make the bulk of their profits selling gasoline.

"I'm truly sorry man's dominion - has broken Nature's social Union -" Excerpt from to a Mouse (translated) by Robert Burns 1785. Burns writes in this poem about the disconnect between Man and Nature - the nature that sustains us. Complaining about government vs business is arguing a small detail of a much larger problem. Human-kind is affecting global ecological cycles, for the first time in geologic history causing an "anthropocene" the age of "man". Will developing more fossil fuel - wherever- assits future generations to live more in balance with a sustainable global system? I'm not sure how you define a Hippy - a relatively recent construct especially when you consider Burns writing in 1785.

I've never been to the BP, but last time I was in the Shell (and every time), they have the best pastelitos around next to Sergio's!

Sure, it's off topic, but filling my belly is considerably less painful than filling my tank. :-)

anon #1, when these prices keep going up you're going to be a hippie by default in a few years when you're growing your own food and riding your bike to work

I was at Shell's station the other day and people were crazed; it was packed, cars were lined up; it looked like years ago when there was a gas shortage. Maybe people thought they were going to run out. There was also a gas truck in waiting to refill upon a moment's notice. It was bedlam.

Oil companies do make a profit. Exxon reported an annual profit of $40.6 billion last year. Gasoline dealers do not since they have to work with profits of pennies for every gallon. Dealers also have to pay credit card commissions of up to 3% which at $4 dollars a gallon comes out to 12 cents per gallon leaving almost no margin of profit. Also as soon as a dealer raises its street price the oil company will raise thier cost constantly keeping them at the same margin. A dealer in Miami Beach or Key Biscayne where prices are much higher makes the same margin as any other station. The oil company is the one that takes advantage of the market and makes huge profits.....Fair???

The gas station on Bird and red road has gas. It's not in the grove, jst a little further away, but maybe worth it instead of standing in line.

That BP station almost never has gas.

But what I don't understand is why people here are so determined to keep driving no matter what the price.

Get outside, walk to work, ride a bike, take the metrorail. It's a lot more pleasant than sitting in traffic or waiting in line for gas!

And with ~60% of Americans considered overweight, it looks like many could use the exercise!

Hahah, latest anonymous. I moved here last year from Mass. and can't wait to vote for Obama.

Amazing how quickly all those Bush bumperstickers were scraped off in shame. I think everyone who voted or cheated for Bush should wear them permanently.

I was not around at the time, but someone who was Jewish in Europe during the 1930's & 40's told me that they were tattoed because of their beliefs.

Is this along the lines of your thinking?

Gas stations make very little profit on sales of petrol. Before you start running your mouth its a good idea to research and know what the hell your talking about.

I know that gas stations make only pennies on each sale of "petrol," you rude ass, but if they are out of gas and closed up, they are not even making those pennies. That was my point.
