Street cams?
I have been wondering about setting up a few Grove street cams. The Grapevine will sponsor and host them, but I don't know how to go about setting them up.
I think one in the center area of Grand, Main and McFarlane would be good. Maybe one in Peacock Park and maybe one on the water somewhere, like behind Scotty's Landing. Maybe even one on Commodore Plaza.
What do you think? BIC, Village Council? Can we discuss this?
Here is one on Duval Street in Key West, with sound! Here are some in New York City.

Love the idea
Always checked the one at Mallory Sq. to see what the action was and of course the sunset,
the weather, and which cruise ship is in..
At the very least, get a written, bulletproof, all details considered permit from the city. There seems to be a lot of controversy created by the proposition to install traffic cams and all these are caused by privacy concerns.
Terrible idea. Very big brother-ish. Cameras like that always make me uncomfortable, and no, it's not because I'm doing something wrong. Why can't we just leave the grove alone, it's fine.
Why do people feel like we have to spend all this money "upgrading" stuff: traffic circles, side walks, automated parking machines, and now cameras. None of those things have improved the quality of life in the grove. They exist only to validate the taxes collected.
Great post Anon4:41pm. Very TRUE !!
Granted I agree with all your comments, but for grapevine, you dont need a city permit thats if you are planning on placing cams on public property. You do need to get approval from whomever owns the location where your planning on placing your cam on. From there depending on the type of cam you will need internet access and electricity. Typcially not a big deal because allowing a cam on their property is free advertising. Specially if you have the web traffic to back up your request. Now you might come into problems depending on where you aim your camera. Most parking lots have cameras but they are focused on the private property they are located on.
Always a spoil sport in the group. This is not to spy on people. It is just a nice thing to have, shows off the town, great for tourism, etc.
Oh I love the idea! It pretty neat if I have an out of town relative or friend who wants to come down and I send them a link to the live cam so they can see how hot and happening the Grove really is. Its modern, its hip and if you do not move with the times you are left behind.
And what so wrong about Big Brother?? While this group of HouseGuests I don't particularly care for I do sort of enjoy the live feeds...
It takes me away from my busy work life I like looking at it and making plans...I say got for it.
Under our present leadership in this country, worrying about webcams is like mixing up apples and oranges, my friends. You know where the webcams are. You turn on your computer, locate the site, and there they are. Now, when was the last time someone tapped your phone? That you don't know. When was the last time you were videotaped without your knowledge. That you don't know. What kind of records does the government have on you? That you don't know. What's the weather looking like over Key Biscayne. That you know because of the webcam. Cameras are objects that can be used for good as well as evil. Webcams good, undercover video recording, bad.
Also, a video on a traffic light is debatable. For instance, if a cop was sitting there, would you run the light? No. If you know that you are being recorded, would you run the light. Probably not. So guess what? You know you are being recorded, you shouldn't break traffic laws, so stop driving like a friggin maniac. Nothing else seems to be working in Miami.Along those line, the traffic cams are really helpful to see where the traffic is jammed.
Google the webcams in Coconut Grove and around Miami, and I think you will find that we already have some.
Also, here's another great Grove site for weather and other stuff. Check out TWIGSDIGS.com.
I hate the idea! Leave big brother at home! I think there is potential for this to be used for bad rather than good. Makes me very uncomfortable. I feel it is an invasion of privacy even though it is in public. People should be able to walk the streets without being watched. It's creepy - reminds me of the Truman Show.
Most street cams barly show you a person's face, it is mostly figures moving around. Hardly an invasion of privacy. Check out the links above, you can't see anyone on them, just figures moving here and there. Street cams are meant to show the "street" and neighborhood, not closeups of people.
Some technology is so unecessary. And what a waste of money. There are so many more important things that need to be done!
Well since I will be hosting it and paying for it, I don't see it as a waste of money. I think it is a nice feature to have.
Please do it. It would be fun if we could watch Peacock
Park. We could watch festivals being set up, enjoyed by the crowds, them taken down. My daughter could see if the skater boyz are down there. If someone wanted to have a game, like soccer or baseball, or even fly a kite, they could check the webcam to see if the field was available or if the wind was blowing. Maybe the Sonesta would help out. Many hotels have webcabs, maybe they could sponsor a couple. It's the perfect spot.
I thought from the Herald article about our "information booths" that they will support high tech security gadgetry, including surveillance cameras.
Speaking of big brother, what the heck are those boxes on the school warning signs on Main Hwy?
Solar panels?
No, not solar panels. They look like cameras, but larger. They each have a transmitter antenna. Check them out next time you're down there.
I think its a great idea.
I like the idea as well :)
