They're the demons on wheels
Yesterday, AnnaMaria and I went to lunch and we were talking about the skater boiz and the zombie tourists buses, about which we prefer. When we came out, we saw a tourist bus (Miami Nice) dropping off people, so we asked the driver about where they came from, where they were going, etc.
Just then, there was a buzz behind us, we turned around to ironically see a long line of skater boiz coming down the block, about 20 of them, all in a long row, just cruising down the sidewalk from CocoWalk to Mary Street.
We just froze with excitement, it was a scene right out of a movie -- right on cue. By the time I grabbed for my camera, they were gone, this is the back of them.
We stood there in awe at their grace and speed. One last skater came by about a minute later, we stopped him and asked where the rest went and wanted to know if he could send them all back so we could get pictures. He must have thought that an odd request, but he said he would. But they never did come back.
As I drove home, I passed them all at one of the buildings on Oak or Tigertail. I almost stopped to take their pictures then, but it wasn't the same as the long graceful line speeding down the block like a long snake.
I would love to get them in the King Mango Strut parade next December. I may try to organize that. AnnaMaria and I were talking about that at lunch, too. I was wondering how to get the Grapevine into the parade, maybe the skaters can skate around like a big grapevine. Hmmm. My wheels are spinning now.
Some anonymous idiot keeps posting a comment about calling the city to have these guys banned from the Grove (talk about demons, I have your IP address fool). Hope this moron does complain, it will be the added publicity we need. The last laugh will be when these skaters cruise right down the center of Main Highway and up and around onto Grand Avenue with thousands of people cheering them on in one of the Grove's most attended signature events -- the King Mango Strut -- starring "The Grapevine Skaters." I like the sound of that.
That could be the new Grapevine masthead photo up at the top. The one there now was taken after last year's Strut, on Virginia Street, outside the bookstore.

whatever what a waste of a blog space
Some suggestions:
1. Go to the park behind the strange little building near St Stephens. They all go there to practice, take some shots, show it to them. Print some cards with your name, email address and website where they can see the pictures posted. I do that a lot.
2. Find buildings with long, shallow steps, they usually congregate there.
As a kid I rode my bike all over the Grove. The skaters are just the new generation. I'm glad they're not sitting at home playing video games. They are good kids, I never see them smoking, drinking or littering. If you want someone to complain about, how about the crowd that shows up after midnight in the Grove....now those are "hudlums". These are just skaters and having a good time.
I afraid running one over they come out of nowhere
The skaterboarders seem to be good kids. I'm also impressed with this blog. Grapevine seems to really "get it" regarding the Grove lifestyle. Keep it up, man. Actually, you might want to consider a documentary film. If you ask for volunteers on your blog, many will step up to help with that project. You certainly would give the town an accurate portrayal.
Cheers to you, Grapevine! You know what I've noticed -- those kids aren't chubby like so many I see in Miami.
Though in a sense you're ruining their fun, 'cause skating is supposed to be rebellious. You're supposed to grit your teeth and shake your fist impotently! "Rrrrr --- you meddlin' kids! I'm calling Constable Sarnoff!"
