Is FPL massacring trees on Main Highway?

This comes from a concerned reader. Does anyone know anything about this? I contacted code enforcement and hopefully they will step in before any more damage is done.

I am trying to get some thoughts from other Coconut Grove residents regarding the FPL "Storm Secure" tree trimming which is taking place along Main Highway (and other areas of the Grove.) I have lived in Coconut Grove for 26 years and feel the trimming is completely out of control.

If you drive along Main Highway the incredible trees that once covered the road now how gaping holes. I must say, not only have the aesthetics of this historic street been changed for the worse, but more importantly the trees now look completely unstable! Should a hurricane come, the chance that they fall and do damage to power lines (or worse to people) is greater.

I wrote and called FPL about this but of course received no response. Have other Grove residents voiced concerns about this?

Main Highway is labeled by the City of Miami as a "Scenic Transportation Corridor". The City should take efforts to maintain and enhance the character of this roadway.. such as using our money to bury the powerlines. Honestly... it would probably cost about $20 million to bury the lines. Sounds like a lot.. but actually it's probably a pittance compared to the tax revenues generated by Grove homeowners. Sarnoff.. please take notice and champion this!

The trees are fine. This summer they will fill in and you won't know the difference. They need it for next hurricane season. Some people don't want buried utilities, though, because it one more reason for high density rezoning. I'd rather go without power for two weeks after a 'cane than see our beautiful neighborhood turn into the center Grove.
Why is that sagging cable still there from the last hurricane, though?

Personally, I think burying the lines along Main Highway is the best bet. Also, in response to the previous post, the amount of cutting that has taken place does not fill in over a summer - it takes many years (and if tree trimming takes place every 6 months the damage will add up). If you drive down Main Highway you will know what I mean. Rezoning along Main Highway is also a non-issue...come on, high density along Main??

Main is the main artery to and from the South Grove. The issue is more sewage than electrical, but if they start digging, there won't be any more excuses to stop higher density zoning. Be very careful what you wish for.
