Anokha is moving to Virginia Street
I was at a wedding recently and I overheard this one dude talking to another dude and he was saying that he has traveled the world and he thinks Anokha is the best Indian food he has ever had. Interesting. Of course I had to butt in and told him I had just eaten there.

Anokha is not the best Indian restaurant except maybe in the Grove, You got to try Guru in SoBe it is fabulous.
My problem with Anokha is that they are not friendly, I mean food is OK, nothing outstanding, once you travel to New Delhi and go to culinary tour in Rajastan you would really see what is Northern Indian food all about.
I brought to Anokha 3 weeks ago Madhur Jeffrey that was in SoBe wine and food Festival and she really did not have much opinion about it, I guess it was just OK.
It was really never my favorite.... Sorry!!!!!
If you are not happy with their food or service please tell them; they do want to please. Do not leave without a conversation with them; you will be surprised how willing they are to make people happy and have them return.
They will be having a big opening party some time in April and evryone will have a chance to sample their food. Stay tuned.
And they are on Code 33.
A lot of people know who I am so I often think they are giving me special treatment, but before they knew me from the blog, they were very welcoming and nice to us. We were confused about the menu and they took their time to explain things and help us order.
Also, my cheap friend found out that they took the Code 33 card after we had paid and while the rest of us waited outside embarrassed, he went back in to get the discount and they happily voided the order and just re-rang it up with the discount without a problem. I was always impressed by them and their food.
I must disagree. I too have traveled far and wide and there is no way this is the best Indian food. I guess it could be the best in the Grove because there is no other, but that is the only way.
I live within walking distance of this restaurant and I prefer to drive nearly an hour to Broward for truly authentic Indian vegetarian food at Woodlands. Maybe their non-veg food is decent but their veg food is not worth having twice.
I am married to a guy from India and I cook Indian at home. I'm always looking for good local Indian...this isn't it.
Outside of the food, do you really think that this was a good move for them? I think foot traffic will be way down. Unless they have a concrete marketing plan, its gonna be tough. Sure, their current location may not have spotlights shining down on it but they do benefit from the draw of other restaurants/bars in the area.
Dont get me wrong though. Even though I dislike Indian food, Id love to see Anokha have success within that newly remodeled building with the hopes that it will attract more businesses to that arm of center grove. That building has been pretty much empty ever since Paulo Luigi's left and that was eons ago.
I tell you I also want them to succeed just because Grove does not need another crappy restaurant that would be out of business.
My problem is this: 3 years ago I went there with my dog and we sat outside the owners sister or wife i don't know who she was sent the waiter to tell me that dogs are not allowed at the restaurant premisses, now that has never happened to me in Grove since my dog is very well behaved and quiet.
I know in their culture dogs are not part of the family but to me that was enough to never go back I go to SoBe or Gables to have actually BETTER Indian food.
Funny, I usually avoid restaurants that allow dogs.
Not a good policy dude I don't even know you but for sure don't like u now
milenko
actually it was illegal until recently, before that restaurants just broke the law. I am a dog owner and i love dogs. But i wont bring my dog to places like greenstreet. The entitlement syndrome, especially of small dog owners, is really getting on me.
First of dog are NEVER allowed inside a eatery establishment. I cannot tell you the number of times I saw people try to bring their dogs in starbucks when i worked there. And they got really pissy when you tell them that the dog has TO LEAVE. heck I saw this chic while i was in line yesterday who was told her dog HAD TO go back outside. She said ok and then just stayed in line with the dog. I mean these employees are doing their job(the fine for the establishment is hefty) and this selfish B*&^% seems to think her right to stand their with her dog in line (which she of course DOESNT HAVE) is greater then the rule of law. I love dogs, but they are dirty. Even your little pet fufu carries many more parasites internally then you or I. They do not belong in most eating establishments period. This in my mind includes greenstreet. I understand scottys landing because the environment is conducive, but other then that, do what i do and tie fido a few yards off of the eating customers outside or do not bring him/her at all.
PS takes those freaking clothes off your dog, its cruel. Talk about a bunch of self-righteous people.
Well that's just it. Love the dogs, hate the owners. So I leave places where I see dogs, especially Scotty's Landing where the dogs get in fights if there is more than one at a time.
I love Indian food, but have avoided Anokha because of reports I've heard from friends of ridiculous levels of price-gouging.
I take it you folks haven't experienced that? Mebbe I'll give it a try.
The best Indian restaurant in Miami-Dade is Imlee, down on U.S. 1 in Pinecrest. You will see a lot of Indian families there, which is one good endorsement.
swlip beat me to the punch - IMLEE is by far one of the better Indian restaurants.
As for the dog comment, I am always wary of people who openly dislike dogs. Speaks volumes about a person. No really!
Dogs dont belong at Scotty's at all because Grapeman is right, they just fight and get in the way. They really dont belong at a restaurant, period. If a restaurant wants to allow dogs on their outside deck/patio, so be it. That is their choice. However, if they dont offer that, take your dog home and dont be a dick about it. This is one of those pretty simple concepts that normal people understand but here in Miami people dont give a shit about anyone but themselves so it just doesnt register.
Talk about "off topic" eh? haha
For the record, I love dogs and they love me.
not sure why the no-dogs in restaurants rule. however, i would rather eat next to a dog i can see than eat food cooked in kitchens infested by roaches and rats and the unwashed hands of kitchen workers that i cannot see.
which includes just about every restaurant in miami.
I'm always wary of those who openly prefer dogs over people. There are some character kinks there ... tread lightly with them.
I agree, Imlee on South Dixie near the Falls is by far better, inexpensive and cleaner than Anokha.
I for one don't think dogs taste at all like chicken.
You guys who goes next to Anokha please check the AC ventilation grills, It will make you puke I promise. Anokha should worry that their food looks like it was a dog food, taste is not bad but look of it is unappetizing
ANYTHING IS CLEANER THAN ANOKHA DUDE!!!!!!!
I think anokha is probably the second worst indian food in Miami-Dade (I'll let you guess the first). I have been all over the world, including several times to india, and anokha does not pass muster--at all. It is expensive, slow, and what they bring out tastes like it shaken right out of the "curry powder" bottle at publix. I keep wanting to give it another chance, but every time it is the same. Underspiced and overpriced.
Try Heelsha (Bangladeshi) or in North Miami, Imlee down south, Woodlands or Udipi (vegetarian) in Broward or even Raja's downtown (no ambiance, but decent food). All are superior.
Hopefully their move will include a change in the menu.
WELL AT LEAST IT WILL BE CLEAN THE FIRST WEEK THAT IS OPEN. I WILL TRY IT AGAIN I GUESS, ALSO THEIR FOOD LOOKS LIKE SOMETHING WARMED UP FROM THE DAY OR TWO BEFORE, DOES IT.?
please everyone if in sobe try GURU, it is absolutely fabulous food, inexpensive and superb, the serve the best naan, chapati with raita as you get there.
also their tandoori oven is the "working" one.
Dogs at restaurants are DISGUSTING & I don't appreciate it. I do not want dog hair in my food especially if the dog is continually scratching itself. Dogs should be BANNED from restaurants, it is just not sanitary. I don't want to smell a stink dog when I am eating.
u must be the owner of Anokha right?
I've tried Guru and i've tried Imlee.
I love Indian food and am happy at most Indian restaurants. When I travel, I look particularly for Indian restaurants.
But, in my opinion, I think Anokha is one of the best! Certainly it is better than Guru or Imlee. Have you tried their ravioli, their lamb dishes, their dal?
How about their nam?
I agree that their service can be too slow. But I always feel as though it's worth the wait.
first time goer to this place from n miami beach. supposed to shoot some photos for the miami magazine coverage this saturday. free copy is usually avialable in many shops throughout the lincoln road and washington. will share my authentic thoughts after.
