When I first moved to the grove (Dec 2007) I got the card for Code 33. Every time I've tried to use it the merchants look at me like I've got three heads. I've only asked when I saw the sign in their window. I would have expected they at least heard of it. I've asked at: Slice/Ice, Tan Solaire and the pizza place on Grand under the previous owners. It hasn't stopped me from supporting the local merchants, but it would be a nice perk if it worked.
I agree, they make you feel guilty if you use it, they take an extra 15 minutes trying to figure out what to do with it and they resent that time you make them take from other customers. I stopped using my card, not worth it.
Well if more people used the card, the businesses would be used to accepting it and not frown so much.
I had one woman (fellow customer) scold me for using it, saying that it wasn't fair for the businesses, only cut into their profits.
Len Scinto: I usually let the people (waiters, counter folk, etc.) know that I am using my card and that they will see it in their tip. For instance the guys at Coco Cigar are great about it. I say "can I do this code 33 I'll add it to your tip jar". They then are happy to give you the discount, you feel good for giving the tip, and everyone leaves happy with a sense of camaraderie.
