Closing time is 3 am

So it's official, the City Commission voted today to have all Coconut Grove bars, clubs and restaurants, in the Central Business District, end liquor sales at 3 am, rolling back the time from 5 am. This does not include the area on Bird Avenue where the Loggerhead (Flanigan's) is located.

The new law starts June 20, 2008. So until then, drink up.

I think this is a great first step. Now, all that's left is for the commission is to get rid of all the on-street parking and increase the rates at the garages. Then, absolutely, no one will come to the grove anymore.

(The above said with copious amounts of sarcasm)

Personally, I am not the greatest fan of the late night bar scene in the grove. However, the fact is that the only businesses that seem to have a shot at making it are those with liquor licenses. So, why make it more difficult for them? As much as we would all like to see the quality and number of shops go up, this ordinance isn't going to do that.

In my opinion, all this does is put more businesses at risk, which could lead to even more empty storefronts.

Idiotic act by the commissioners which will hurt Grove businesses and stifles more of our freedoms.

Selling alcohol until 3:AM is reasonable. The community derives no benefit by extending the drinking hours. Zero.

"stifles more of our freedoms"? Oh please. Party somewhere else at 4AM on a Thursday...

We pay the taxes. We pay for the clean-up. We pay for the extra cops. Go drink somewhere else so our taxes can be used for things we want, not cleaning up after a bunch of drunk U of M students.

3:00 am cut-off is just fine. Let the drunks get their fill prior to 3:00 am. Hopefully this will free up the police to take care of more important issues than babysitting and arresting sloppy drunks.

The Commissioners should go after the lawless clubs on NE 11th Street next. They should close at 5:00 am or 3:00 am and not be open 24/7. Too many police calls, too many problems, too many drunks. Time to fix the problem.

You mentioned June being the time this law goes into effect but last night Sandbar had last call at 2:45a and closed at 3p. I didnt go anywhere else but I imagine they all followed suit. Maybe everyone is practicing?

Sandbar always closes around 3 am. Same with Barracuda, and almost all the others.

Mr. Moes is really the bar that is affected most by all of this. They cater to the 3-5 am crowd. Many people in the service industry hang out here after their shifts end. This has got to be a significant blow to their business.

All of their investments were made thinking that they could stay open until 5. Now that they can’t, and their business plan has to change drastically. If this was going to accomplish something monumental, than maybe it would make sense. But it won’t. You are just going to have people flocking through the residential neighborhoods to Flanigan’s, which is not affected and will continue to stay open until 5 am.

With all of the issues that the Grove has, it seems like a misdirection of effort to be concentrating on this. Business is not an enemy of the Grove, and as a resident I would much rather see more of a concentration on the real crime that is happening right down the street.

As an employee of one of the bars that closes at 3AM I agree with the previous comment.

By passing this law you are not affecting the drunks, you are affecting the hardworking managers, bartenders, wait staff, bouncers, barbacks, etc...The drunks will find somewhere else to go. The employees and businesses will loose money and will eventually also move elsewhere. Then where will your pretty little grove be. No bars, no restaurants, no people walking around buying clothes from your little shops. In the end we all loose.

I dont think that it is not right that they are going to change the drinking time till 3 am. i understand that there is hard working people that need to go to sleep early, but now there is going to be alot of traffic at 3am , people are going to be going to open places in south miami, miami beach, and downtown. People in college are no longer goning to talk the suttle and are going to start driving drunk, to go to another bar to get the job done, if the drinking privelge is until 3am it should be like wise every where, not cause some rich people in the grove want to try to get the getto out of the grove. i live here and there hasnt been major problems. people in the grove are against every like home depot, personally i think it is good that there is a place to go to in case of emergancy so close by. What people should be doing is making sure they dont change the drinking age to 16 because then there will be many more accidents..
