Maybe she is pissed that HD hasnt been a problem in the neighborhood at all? Parking lot is rarely full but busy enough so it doesnt look dead like it has for the past 3 years, no trash all over the place, and no trucks causing traffic problems. I must admit Im surprised about no traffic as that was my one fear but I guess I was wrong. Actually, HD was very useful when I needed a trash barrel, wicks, and citronella for my NYE bash.
I can't really understand why someone would protest the HD now. As a neighbor, I really have to admit it hasn't been bad at all. No big messes, no parking overflow, no tons of people. I don't think the store is going to last... it is always empty, so maybe market forces will take care of the "problem".
You can thank the Grove First for keeping them scaled back to 70,000 sq ft. rather than taking over the entire site, saving the trees that almost block the Ho Depot sign and saving the grocery store. I have heard they are already laying off employees. The residents managed to have no outdoor speakers, no outdoor sales, no outdoor nurseries emanating fertilizer and pesticide smells, not having them sell heavy contractor supplies and cut lumber and keeping heavy duty sales at 8th St. thus reducing traffic. Now we just have to control the massive delivery trucks that block traffic and get stuck in the parking lot.
To Blind Mind:
SHOP SHELL LUMBER COMPANY!
You could have bought all those things at Shell Lumber, our community store. They are always there for us for the Strut, the Boy Scouts, Shakespeare in the Park, etc. They are also on Code 33for lightbulbs and Ace paint.

Ok, here we go... While the Grove First may have played a part, I really dont feel indebted to them at all. I think that the whole community saw an issue, chose a side, and battled it out to reach this conclusion. I also think that newspapers and especially blogs like this one did a great job of creating a forum for discussion about the issue so that all facts were stated on both sides of the coin in a way that made it easy to make a personal decision (once you weeded thru all of the extremists, of course). Fertilizer and pesticide smells? Come on already, youre reaching there... I have yet to see a problem with the delivery trucks too. Its one thing to bitch about HD if they are harming the community but that clearly isnt the case here.
To Anon above:
I went to HD because its close and convenient. Im also pretty lazy, so going across US1 for a trash barrel and citronella isnt gonna happen. Im sure theyll make up that $20 purchase eventually. Ace paint sucks but the Behr at HD is worse. Sherwin Williams all the way baby!
I, personally, don't shop at Shell Lumber for a variety of reasons:
1. Their parking is inconvenient
2. They don't have A/C in the majority of the store
3. Their selection is not that great
4. Their prices are higher
5. They are still a business; I don't feel the need to paint a business "white" because another one is "black".
When it comes to small stuff, I much prefer the ACE Hardware in US 1 corner to Le Jeune; I find the service very friendly, the people very helpful and for small stuff their selection is good. Their parking is great, almost always empty. I have no clue if they make money or not (their equipment rental probably saves the day) but this is the kind of business I would rather patronize.
For big stuff (e.g., a cabinet, a toilet, shelving...) Home Depot still manages to beat everyone else.
Market forces, however, will probably do them in.
Whisper "Home Depot" and Blind Mind goes ape.
I do? I just dont mind them being there and get tired of all the whining and people reaching for reasons to say its bad to have them there.
That's right guys it is not too bad having HD in the Grove because they are small and because of that they really don't impact the community. Most of the Grovites boycott it anyway just because of how their mindset that they can go in anywhere they want. They are there illegally because the City didn't follow their own laws. Because they are small they have less deliveries, they don't carry contractor supplies and we can thank the residents who stood up to this retailer. Remember they were going to take the whole site originally and that would have left us with no grocery store.
