Black booths popping up around the Grove
They are "eyes on the street" supposedly. There are three locations: Grand and McDonald -- at the post office, across from Greenstreets on Main Highway -- by the Cloisters and one in front of CocoWalk. An attendant will be paid to sit on their ass all day and give directions to tourists and summon police and so on. Dumb.
I don't see too many tourists on Grand and McDonald or at the Cloisters, across from Greenstreets. But whatever.
They look like prison guard stations or even worse, Gulag booths. Do they need to be black and do tourists really need an info booth? The Grove is three streets long. The best thing is to let the tourists wander around and go into stores and ask around for things. It will bring more business to stores this way and it makes it a friendlier place than to have a cold black info booth.
Maybe it will work, I see them sitting empty in a matter of months. Maybe they can be used for other purposes once the initial plan fails -- perhaps a place to get out of the rain, or maybe a quiet place to talk on your cell phone. Time will tell.
I think a cop on the beat is what the Grove needs. One cop to walk the streets and answer questions and handle problems -- a nice friendly old-town type thing. Whatever happened to the cops on horseback anyway? That had such charm.

i don't think they're ugly at all. what will be ugly, however, is the poor soul who will have to sit in them on an August day in Miami. do you think they're air conditioned?
I think they are pretty but should be another color other than black.
Hey, if we can get some off duty Hooter Girls to sit on their lovely asses in those booths we might at last have something positive happening. The Grove does not need only a change it needs some radical change, and Coconut Grove has radicalism in its DNA, unfortunately some forces are trying to suppress this essence of the community.
Gulag booths????? I, personally, find them pretty. However, for the life of me, I can't see anyone sitting inside. Are you sure they will be manned? Perhaps they will be like an info center where local merchants can have flyers, coupons, etc?
What a great idea, now we have somebody to tell when the parking meters don't work.
Maybe they placed one at McDonald and Grand to warn wandering tourists to turn back.
who is paying for these and how much?
if taxpayers, then this is an outrage.
if the merchants or chamber of commerce, then new management is needed.
questions from tourists?
1/i thought one of the grove's main problems is that fewer people go there these days.
2/i hope the attendants are multi-lingual, since nobody seems to speak english in the vicinity
have to put my two cents in here
Yes, they should be more colorful, remember the
cops in shorts and baby blue short sleeves. I could
sit all day and watch those legs. Now, our Grove
UPS driver nice. ops day dreaming.
There are lots and lots of tourists and with the
euro outpacing our dollar expect an influx.
Most of the people working in the Grove don't
even know where the Barnacle is.
Maybe they should hire Romero Britto to make them more colorful.
i wonder who was smoking crack when they gotten the idea, I am sure those 3 booths cost us pretty penny something like $450.000 or so and someone has pocketed good part of it.
There will be AC in it. Better if they put 2-3 more police officers giving fines to noise motorcycles and arresting drunks at night.
Or maybe they can be used as a holding pen for those loud drunks that hang out after 3 a.m.
A publicly viewed drunk tank where the drunks become spectacles for those rich shoppers who are strolling the Grove on the following afternoon.
We might even dress the drunks in a Britto designed shirt for further humiliation.
why they dont put cafe cubano machine in each booth anyway cant get one in entire coconut grove.
these comments are hilarious! I agree they should be colorfully painted or something. I also agree they should be able to hang flyers and have a map, etc....not necessarily someone sitting in there. The summer will be brutal!
Coconut Grove has radicalism in its DNA, unfortunately some forces are trying to suppress this essence of the community.
It's not the oppression so much as forty years of a perpetual haze of weed and booze. What was once "radical" has become conventional wisdom among the aging boomers who dominate Grove politics.
what a waste of money! You know somewhere down the line they will get vandelized and broken into since there won't be someone in there all the time.Good place for a homeless person to hang out or to take a Pee!

If you use a Britto design, like the one used for the Art Show poster several years ago, then you will need people in the booth to tell tourists that there aren't any beaches in Coconut Grove. Leave Britto in South Beach, where he belongs. We have plenty of good artists right here in the Grove.
Now, if you used this year's poster, you could cover the entire booth in floating vaginas. That's something we have in the Grove.
Does anyone know the names of the people who approved these things?
Looks like another bright idea brought to you by your commissioner.
Might as well put a crack dealer in the booth and let him do business from there. They are on every corner anyhow and the cops just cruise on by.
Crack booths - for your convenience.
Well the info windows do face the street, convenient for crack pick up, not so good for the tourist forced to stand in the street in order to get information.
Who designed these things, and who's cousin got the contract????
