Woman almost kidnapped while jogging

Four men attempted to force a woman jogging on the Rickenbacker Causeway into their 1999 Ford Explorer early Monday morning. They had a gun, rope and duct tape. Luckily they were arrested.

Jose Manuel Nuñez, 21, Nelsin Escobar, 20, Allan Soriano-Lopez, 19, and Alberto Aquino Alvarez, 21, are charged with attempted armed kidnapping.

One of the men had bruises and scratches all over him which led police to believe they had tried this before and someone in self defense caused the wounds. Police came upon the scene as it was happening and that appears how this one particular woman was saved.

It occurred around 5 am, a common time for runners and joggers. Surprisingly there are a lot of people out at that time but apparently these guys were brazen enough to not care.

Just a warning to people that maybe they should run in pairs and stay alert.

WOW... What the hell is going on in this city? It seems like lately people are blatantly committing major crimes, in this case in broad daylight, and thinking they will get away with it.

Also, why does the Herald bury a story like this on _page 6_ of the Metro section??

The crime occured at 5 a.m. according to the Herald. I was out on the Key Monday morning on my bike and noticed 5 -6 police officers surrounding an SUV with 4 men. It must have been them.
I am an active triathlete and am either running or biking on the key every morning.
This has truly scared me and makes me re-think living in Miami.

I am SO glad the woman got away.
You know, I carry mace, and am naive enough to think I can take on an attacker - but I think in the singular: one attacker. The thought of four is terrifying.

I also meant to say it's really great to see that the Miami Police stopped the crime from happening. They consistently have a presence along the Key Biscayne trail and it's nice to see it pay off.

Get a gun, learn to use it, and get your Florida concealed carry permit. Instructors are available at the Ace Pro gun store and shooting range (out by the International Mall) for those who want to learn.

It was great that the cops arrived on the scene in this case, but they won't always be there.

Btw, four guys operating out of a SUV sounds like more than the random kidnapping. I suspect that this ties into something else. Just a hunch. I could be wrong.

Hey Blind Eye,
I guess you don't know this, but its dark at 5am. Sunrise isn't until almost 7am these days.

why the hell wasnt this on the front page of the paper and all over the news. Its scary man. And swilp, you cannot run with a LOADED GUN. Thats just asking for an accident. I run a lot at night because its too hot right now. I usually assume since there are so many other people out Im going to be fine, but 5am on the rickenbalker is also pretty active with people. These guys should NEVER see the light of day again. I have been seriously considering taking some self defense classes(iseali style). One more reason to get on that.

You most certainly can go jogging with a loaded gun. If you're concerned about an accident, then don't chamber a round unless you perceive a threat.

Firearms are only dangerous in the hands of those with malign intent and those who are untrained in how to use them.

Oh gimme a break. You shouldnt HAVE to go running with a gun and the idea is completely absurd. Everyone is so quick to turn this country into the Wild West. The simple solution is go running with a buddy or run during daylight hours. Nuff said.

There was this great ad from Nike about ten years ago that showed a woman in her running gear looking in her mirror and she sees a guy with a knife behind her. She starts running and a great chase through the woods ensues....but then the attacker just can't keep up, he's totally winded. The woman runs away seemingly with ease.
The ad was pulled because it offended people (who knows?!), but I thought it was great.

That's exactly right. I go running with a buddy, and no one has ever bothered us. We take turns on who carries the Uzi.

Believe it or not, sometimes there is no other time to fit in the exercise except in the early morning darkness. Once the kids get up (this is in case you don't have kids), there just isn't another time to fit in any exercise. Kids, school, work, house, sometimes 5 am is the only chance a person can work out, and yes, some of us like the quiet of being alone before our day starts. Its a time to think, meditative almost. That was a young mother out running the other day, and I feel so bad for her that those guys stole that hour from her, probably for the rest of her life. I'm sitting here right now wondering if I should take my daily run.
Thank Bush for prolonging our darkness this year.

Run with a gun? Come on. Bottom line is there are bad people out there who will do bad things. You cant live life guarding in case of any crazy situation. Takeprudent safety precautions, but jogging with a gun is overboard. Frankly this was as brazen as it gets. Key Biscayne is notorious for its police presence, one wouldthink that running on a major road there should be safe. These guys were just nuts. Best solution: make yourself an undesireable target by running with a partner.

Considering the nut jobs that are out there I am all for the right to carry concealed weapons, but even I think that is an absurd suggestion to carry a gun in this case. First of all, its a pain in the butt to jog with stuff like your keys, ipod, etc. Anything you carry is a obstruction to jogging. But a gun? how was this woman supposed to conceal it? Where? Guns are HEAVY. Even a small one. You cant just tuck it in your elastic gym shorts and expect it not to fall when you run. So what should she do? Wear a backpack, and have a loaded weapon bouncing around with every step? Come on.

And yes, if the gun is a semi-auto pistol, it should not accidentally go off unless a bullet is in the chamber. But still, accidents happen - famous last words: "I didnt think it was cocked/loaded" Besides, its doubtful you would be able to recognize the threat, and while scared out of your mind, with sweaty trembling hands, properly pull out, cock, and fire a gun.

To John who asked why the Herald buries a story like this on page 6 of the Metro section...
Perhaps it has something to do with protecting the rights!! of illegal aliens in this community. Enough said.

Just one more thing. The people that think that runners should change their whole schedule need to remember, this was an isolated incident. Don't let these 4 men make victims out of all of us. I stopped running for a week over this and now I am the victim. We need to do what we need to do. That woman did not do anything wrong, and if I decide to run in the early morning alone, I am not doing anything wrong. Whether its pepper spray, or a gun, or a partner or nothing at all, I will not let these jerks interfere with my life. People, do what you need to do to feel safe, but don't be a victim.
I hear of people dying on I-95 all the time, but I still drive there.
Also, if anyone thinks that the people around them are not carrying guns, well, tell yourself whatever you want. As long as you feel safe.
