Focusing on the positive

In the book The Secret, it says if you are against something, don't dwell on it. If you are anti-war, dwelling on the war only brings more war. This is the "law of the universe". If you are sick and don't want to be sick, don't use that word, say, "I want to be well," not "I don't want to be sick." Say, "I want to be on time," not, "I don't want to be late." Do not dwell on the thing or word you are against.

Mother Teresa said: "I will never attend an anti-war rally. If you have a peace rally, invite me." She knew The Secret.

And I bring this all up because if we do not want Home Depot or the Mercy Project, we must all dwell on something else. Instead of being against Home Depot, be for a brand new Barnes and Noble or a Kohl's in that spot or whatever else you think would be good for the area.

Instead of being against Jorge Perez and the Related Project at Mercy, be for the open land or for a low rise office building or townhomes, or whatever else you would prefer in the area. Focus on that, not on the evilness that is The Related Group.

Let's all try this. Let's all think and focus on what we want, not on what we don't want. I am serious.

...and while you are wishing for a Barnes and Nobles who is going to be keeping up with the Code violations of a Home Depot, the issuance of erroneous building permits, the lack of compliance with City laws!
It is like saying I am wishing for a million dollars...but you know what, in the meantime I'd better be working my regular job.

I wish for an high end indoor flee market in the old Kmart building.

I wish for a world class fine arts museum in the Coconut Grove Playhouse.

I wish for a water park at the Mercy high rise site.

I seriously doubt that any of the high priced attorneys and lobbyists that represent Home Depot or the Related Group follows the principles and philosophy of The Secret.

They are highly focused on accomplishing their task and winning their fights against the residence of Coconut Grove.

I suggest that we need to be even more focused and determined then they are, if we are to have any chance at all of winning the battles against Home Depot and the Mercy Hospital/Related Group projects.

Your secret should be shared with everyone and cannot be emphasized enough. Most bloggers on this site appear to dwell on the negative. Those who are against appear to have louder voices. We all should dwell on what is positive about where we live; there is much to be positive about - why else do we live here?

I love this place, South Florida. It is just very frustrating to see so many other cities of this size work so much better. As for the Grove, it is really in need of a makeover. Nothing major, just a good scrubbing.

With all due respect, this philosophy is only relevant for things that are out of your sphere of influence. If you have the ability to change the outcome of an event and you are passionate, then you have a duty to put up a good fight for your beliefs. A philosophy more suited for success is, "take control of your destiny" and after the dust settles, find something positive about the experience.
