I kind of think they are piggy-backing on the main festival, but that being said, keep in mind that there is the Saint Stephen's Arts & Crafts Fair, which looks as if it is part of the big festival, but it is a separate event. That's the one at the church under the big trees. As you enter from the McFarlane Road side, get some nice Mama Mia Italian ices -- that's my yearly ritual upon entering.
And at Mayfair, the One Ear Society is promoting local artists who were shut out of the main festival. Coconut Grove's own Anna Maria Windisch-Hunt is the organizer of this event.

Let me put this in perspective. No one was shut out.
In the Atrium all the Artists but one are first time exhibitors. They have no duplicates these are original works of art done one by one by one. These artists are just experiencing what it is like to be on site at 6 a.m. to set up and stay until 10 p.m. for the first time. Will they do this again or stay in their studios and let word of mouth get out about their art. These are a collectors dream. The prices are still modest.
In the Plaza by the Fountain each and every artist is an award winner within a one year period.. Go see them talk art learn something. They will gladly give you the time of day.
As for myself outside of Premier Surgery on Mary St. I had a collector come by and specifically ask for my original life guard stands, which were not on display. We negotiated, he wanted the entire collection all 12. I pulled them out so he could
see them. (I was in awe!) We could not agree on price. As I know him to be a serious collector, I assured him that I would not sell them of peace meal. But if I got the asking price they would go as a set, meanwhile they are slated for some upcoming exhibitions.
Let me give you this simili. An elegant woman owns a matching set of pearls, necklace and earrings.. To wear both together would be over the top. Appropriate once in a while for special occasions. That special occasion is here now in Coconut Grove. Too much on a daily basis.
Most times she wears just the earrings, they
are after all the same quality as the necklace.
Art at Mayfair is FREE as is St. Stephen"s and don't
overlook the artists on the streets from Grove House. Look at the art. As to my favorite it's the proper English tea at St. Stephen's if I can find someone to watch my art for one hour. Any volunteers.
Again no one was shut out. CGAF had over 1,500
applications they only had room for 350.
With all due respect Anna. The Coconut Grove Arts Festival has the same artists year after year in the same spots year after year.
They need to change it up a bit. I think the locals are shut out. I think the local artists should come first. I think their work should be included every year.
All I see now are assembly line art -- again, the same paintings, the same sculptures, the same jewelry. Nothing ever changes, at least give the locals artists space to be seen among the traveling circus.
just take a ride up to tampa the weekend after next for the gasparilla art festival. same show. free admission. less hassle all around.
Im no artist, so maybe Im missing something, but why is it that the same people show the exact same pieces every year? Do they not create new pieces throughout the year?
