Grove is going to the dogs
I am hoping that this project is delayed for years in the courts.
I still cannot understand how Marc Sarnoff, the district commissioner, is totally ignored and railroaded. Is this the rest getting even now that Linda Haskins is gone? What gives Joe Sanchez and the others on the Commission the right to even make a decision about this property? They don't have a clue. Has Michelle Spence-Jones ever been to the Grove? Are she and Commissioner Angel Gonzalez getting even because they were stuck with Camilus House, which he made a big issue out of?
I did find it interesting that Comm. Gonzalez was speaking directly to Jorge Perez saying he would like to be very rich one day, too. Was this something we need to question? Was he asking for his payback?
I just hate the way these fools ramble on. Marc Sarnoff and Tomas Regalado are the only eloquent members of the Commission with brains and a hearts and they actually make sense when they speak. The others go on and on about nothing -- making no sense. They talk in circles. Their mind seems to be made up before they even vote or even hear people speak. It's almost like their non-stop rambling is an attempt to cover up their total contempt for people and quality of life.
This zoning issue is something that should be voted on by the whole Coconut Grove population -- not the whole City, but the whole Grove. I think it is time again to push for annexation from the pathetic City of Miami. Any takers?
The Commissioners' contact info is here. Please keep bombarding them with complaints.

Marc was perhaps naive about one important thing in Miami politics -- that District 2 is the City's piggy bank. A numbers of commenters here noted, prior to the election, that unless Marc finds ways to build bridges with the rest of the commissioners, his election will prove to be a phyrric victory for the Grove.
It was apparent that Angel Gonzalez, Joe Sanchez and Michelle Spence-Jones had little or no understanding of the issue they voted on. They were supposed to vote on an application to change zoning from G/I to R4. They kept referring to the "project" and to "Mercy Hospital's need for money". The City Attorney should have exerted more control. The Chairman, Angle Gonzalez, was pandering to Jorge Perez. Joe Sanchez and Spence-Jones were pandering to Jorge Perez.
Marc Sarnoff and Tomas Regalado were correct. It is a Grove issue. It is a Dist 2 issue. It is a "quality of life" issue. The majority of the people who spoke in favor of the change in zoning were offered money from the developer, in one way or another. The opponents were advocating for "quality of life".
It was only First Reading. And it is true, Dist 2 provides almost 65% of all the revenues in the City. Watch what happens at Second Reading.
I can't wait to walk my three dogs to the cafes in the grove when I get back from Paris. They love to go out to eat, and now I won't have to drive them to south beach to enjoy the cafe scene. I will be able to merrily take them out in my own neighborhood. :)
Dear Grapevine,
Yes, I will gladly volunteer some of my time for the movement of Coconut Grove to secede from the City of Miami.
I don't know how much money would be needed but imagine this scenario which I think is reasonable: Two thousand people donate $200 for a total of $400,000. An accounting firm would be paid to be the treasurer. That might be enough money to pay for the entire process.
If Key Biscayne, Aventura, Cutler Bay, Miami Lakes, and Pinecrest can successfully incorporate, Coconut Grove should be able to accomplish the same thing.
This same movement was attempted almost twenty years ago. Does anybody know who was involved at that time?
Dan Ricker got a petition going just before Hurricane Andrew to secede from the city. He had all the signatures needed but the hurricane blew everything away. That nut Xavier Suarez was the mayor at the time.
One thing that can be done is start a movement to recall Sanchez and Spence-Jones.
Word has it that Spence-Jones owes Manny Diaz legal fees in the amount of $250,000. Could this affect her vote?

Aventura is doing better than ever. They keep their money in their own city instead of supporting the rest of the City. Aventura has a first class police department and other services and the Grove can and should do the same. Enough with the Banana Republic.
