Milam's and Linda Haskins

I received this letter from a reader:

"Just wanted to let you know that there is a huge Haskin sign sitting in the middle of the produce aisle at Milam's. I walked up to the manager and informed him that I would no longer be shopping there with a political sign in the store.

If anyone has any questions as to where Haskins loyalties lie, stop my Milam's. I always felt sorry for Milam's, but with that sign, I will now be boycotting them. You don't walk into Gardner's Market and see Sarnoff's face, so why do we have to look at hers in Milam's.

Shame on you, Milam's. It won't only be the Grove store I boycott. It'll be the Bird and Red as well. You owe Coconut Grove an apology."

It's no secret that Milam's has been supporting Haskins, she has said it herself. Is Milam's wrong? I see everyone's election signs all over, many businesses put elections signs in their windows. I am no supporter of Haskins, and I think she is terrible for the City and the Grove, but I am wondering if Milam's is wrong in this instance.

I do tell them they are sell-outs (to Home Depot) every time I am there, but I suppose I am a sell-out too, because I am doing business with them.

Milam's and Linda Haskins have something in common. They both depend on Home Depot. Milam's needs Home Depot to extend its lease on favorable terms. Linda Haskins depends on campaign contributions from Home Depot's attorneys and lobbyists. Neither particulary care about the neigborhood.

Friday night was the ultimate campaign ploy. Linda Haskins at Milams with Seth Gordon standing by her side (who she says has nothing to do with her campaign) and Max Milam. How low can you go. Maybe she is securing her next job.

I will be so relieved when this election is over so we can all have a little peace. It is not Grove First that is forcing Milams out, but Home Depot. If they really wanted to be a good neighbor they would leave room for the store. H/D just wants what it wants the devil take the hindmost.

I am a Grove resident and as an interesting aside, I don'tknow anyone who shops at Milams. My elderly black friends shop at Publix on 37 Ave. It would be nice to have a clean, reasonably prices market in the Grove. But it doesn't seem possible.

Years ago we had an A&P where the Burger King now is, on 27 ave. It was a dump. I did shop there, it was dirty and old and at that time we truly had no options...except Winn Dixie, where Mayfair now stands. That too was a dirty dump. Groveites still have lots of options, 5 Publix; S. Miami, LeJeune, 37 Ave, 27 Ave and Brickell. I think there is a small Mom and Pop mkt in West Grove, plus Gardners, Fresh Mkt and La Estancia for beef on Ponce across from MerricK Park. And if someone wants fresh seafood they can go to the charter boats at Crandon Marina for the freshest seafood. I hardly think anyone's going to starve.

We are not helpless people. We have lots of options so let's stop whining and just get on with it.

Haskins is desperate. She did not even carry the Grove, her own community, but of course for only less than 2 yrs. She didn't even carry her own precinct. How said is that?

Seems like (1) shooting yourself in the foot and (2) a huge over reaction.

When the campaign is over and a week later everyone has forgotten Haskins, Sarnoff and the entire crew because we have to face realities over which they can do nothing, like the 50%+ increase again of windstorm insurance, you will either (1) not have a convenient store to shop in (I assume that you shop at Milam because it is convenient and you find value in it) or (2) swallow your own (anonymous) words in your mind, and go back to shopping in Milam.

Either way... you don't win.

If you want to boycott Milam's do it because of _who_ they are supporting. Not because they are supporting a candidate or voicing their political stance: that's just ridiculous.

I think the most illuminating point is Haskins lies. Haskins states to Herald columnist Ana Menendez she wants no help from Seth Gordon. Haskins states to Jim Defede that Seth Gordon is not part of her campaign. Yet Nov 17 and Nov 18 there she is at Milams arm in arm with Seth Gordon. Her actions tell us the truth. Time for a change.

Linda Haskins has told numerous lies throughout this campaign. Her flyer in yesterday's mail stated that Sarnoff wanted the dog park so he could have parking space for his law firm. There was already a park there, and more parking than there is now. Her slant on the truth should tell you which direction she will go if elected.
The reason to boycott Milam's is because they are our neighborhood store; therefore, they should care about our neighbors. Maybe I'll be the only one not going there, maybe no one else will care about my little boycott, but, just like recycling, I still have a responsibility to my own self respect to do it.
Besides, don't you think a store that is being used my our neighbors should be held accountable for overcharging for their products, or do they think that since they have a "captive" audience, they can charge whatever they want? A dollar extra over the price of Publix's for a bag of salad? Where does that extra money go?

Max Milam should build another store on Grand Ave if he really wants to serve the people. There is plenty of space up near Dixie Highway.

Even if the Max Strang plan was used Max Milams store would be pushed into the corner of a 3 story parking garage. It's impossible to park at any Home Depot without driving around searching. Can you imagine going round and round trying to find a parking space in a garage to do grocery shopping?

Max Milam also said they planned to put in an outdoor dining area. Since the entrance to Milams would I assume be right off the garage, do they propose putting an alfresco cafe adjacent to the garage. How appealing. Choking down a sandwich in a shadowy parking garage while listening to the echoing noise of car engines and breathing in carbon monoxide fumes.

Max Milam can retire with the payoff he's getting from HD for his space and support. The sympathy Milams is trying to generate by having such an unsavory character as Haskins hanging out and accosting customers is actually turning people off.

We now hear Home Depot is so desperate to get Linda Haskins elected (she was appointed by Manny Diaz) that Home Depot flew in some of its anti-neighborhood specialists to help Haskins defeat Marc Sarnoff. We wonder what dirty tricks they will utilize next?

Haskins still using the city paid chauffeur?

One dirty trick is to remove Sarnoff signs last night on Tigertail. A few signs survived the purging. Not a surprise in this Banana Republic.

65% to 35%. Marc defeats Haskins.
My, how things have changed?
