Remembering Wayne Brehm
I was born in the Grove in 1957.
I worked at Om Jewelry (3070 Grand Ave) for first Mike Weiner, and later for Wayne Brehm from 1978 to 1995 when I escaped to east Tennessee.
I have many memories of the Grove, some I can even talk about...
I remember Lums and The Octopus' Garden, Symposium in Sound (later renamed Yukky's) and lots of other groovy stuff.
After Wayne died I lost touch with everyone there, and haven't been back to Miami in a lot of years. I'm putting together a website dedicated to Wayne Brehm and am searching for people who remember him, who have photos of him, and who would like to contribute.
Please forward this email to whomever:

So If anyone can help, there is the email address. I used to eat breakfast at Lums many mornings with friends. We used to sit at a booth at a window overlooking McFarlane Road. Now I don't know what that thing is there in its place. It is so out of character for the area. Even the church next door is a club, but at least it is the original structure.

I know that this isn't about Lum's, but Lum's was great.
The Tom Thumb, the Florida Pharmacy, and the Kaleidoscope were great, too.
Wayne Brem did some jewelry work for me. I know that he was one of the real Grovites and was loved by all.
I forwarded this request to Antoinette Baldwin and Glenn Terry who head up the Mango Strut parade. They also had a showing of Wayne's cartoons a few years ago at the Mayfair.
I'm the guy mentioned above. I made a new email address for myself since that one posted tends to bounce. It's Ray@CustomMadeSilver.com
I went ahead and bought the domain name http://OmJewelry.net and linked it to http://CustomMadeSilver.com and I have a link to the Mango Strut website there.
I still wish I could get some photos of Wayne and maybe some of his comics, to put up there.
I guess I'll dig around for Phillis' phone number too.
HOW INTERESTING.. I WAS RECENTLY TALKING TO A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE ABOUT THE GROVE AND THIS LITTLE 'FUNKY ' JEWLERY STORE..I THINK IT WAS ON GRAND AVENUE..AND THEM WE REMEMBERD THE NAME: 'OM JEWELERY'. IN THE LATE 1970'S WHILE I RESIDED IN THE GROVE, ATTENDED UNIVERSITY AND ART SCHOOL , I BOUGHT SEVERAL BEAUTIFUL RINGS AT 'OM' . I SORT OF RECALL THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND SEVERAL PEOPLE THAT WORKED THERE..
..AND THERE YOU HAVEA COMMENT FROM THE ARTIST, TONY SCORNAVACCA, ( IS THIS THE SON? WHOM MADE THE ABOVE COMMENT..MUST BE..)) WHOM I DID FIGURE MODELLING FOR, SO MANY YEARS AGO!! ( I THINK HE HAD A LOVELY HOME ON BAYSHORE DRIVE?.. OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT..ON THE WAY TO VIZCAYA..).
TAKE CARE...

Our paths had to cross during those years. I was one of The Candlemakers with Jerry Goldstein, and the 'gang from New England'. It was open from 1975-1985, inside the small mall next door to Cozzoli's. I had an English sheepdog that was always in the shop or by my side. I was looking thru pix of those days today to send some to a friend and remembering Om Jewelry, and a necklace I once owned from there. I now am making some jewelry myself and live in NC. I got to 'escape' from the New Grove in 1987..a good thing from what I see these past years there. I make sure to go 'home' around Art Festival time, when I do return. They were great times and I would do them all over again...NO regrets. Holly Jacobs
