Where is the gas station?

I went to buy gas today at the station near the post office on Grand Ave. only to see it is not there. The site is not part of that high rise going up. This is the beginning of the end of Grand Avenue, I fear.

The Playhouse

So now the creeps on the Board of Directors for the Coconut Grove Playhouse want to undo the historic status. They want to appeal the recent decision to spare the landmark.

At a meeting tomorrow, lawyers for the greedy board are going to argue that the 1926 structure has on historical value.

Miami historian Arva Moore Parks put it best: "I don't understand how a public institution that relies on public goodwill would write this kind of document [the rude, nasty appeal].

Guess Arva doesn't realize that the Board is in some developer's pocket.

Restaurant slobs

There are a couple of restaurants in the Grove where a friend says he will never return.

He says the wait staff and servers are dirty looking. They don't wear uniforms and dress in t-shirts and ripped jeans and look as if they just woke up in the gutter. He feels that if the staff looks so dirty, he would hate to see what goes on in the kitchen.

He has a point. Hope some of these restaurants get the point, too and make some changes. A clean shirt goes a long way.

Planning the King Mango Strut

The King Mango Strut will take place on Saturday, December 31st, 2005 at 2 pm in Downtown Coconut Grove. The appropriate theme this year is "One Disaster after Another".

The Kick-Off Party is Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2005.

In honor of Wilma, come dressed as your favorite Flintstone. Win prizes for the best costumes and best Fred holler, "Yyyyyabba-dabba-doooooooo!" and of course, ""Wiiilllllmmaaaaaa!!!" So come out of your cave and foot pedal your car over to Firkin & Friar Pub at 3148 Commodore Plaza starting at 6:30 pm.
Bring your talent, a guitar, sing the FEMA blues 'cause it's open mike night - Gong Show style!

Strut Meetings are on Tuesdays at 6:30 pm at the Firkin & Friar Pub, 3148 Commodore Plaza. If you have a group and a funny plan - great! If you want to participate but don't know what to do, don't worry, the wacky Mangoheads will give you something nutty to do. They also need behind the scenes strutters. For more information, please call the Mango Hotline at 305-401-1171 or email to abaldwin@insomnic.net

At 6:30pm there seems to be plenty of parking meters available but if you can't find parking on the street, we found the US Post Office on Grand and Commodore to have the cheapest and closet parking for $3.

Elections - Nov. 15

The City of Miami elections and the Cocoanut Grove Village Council elections have been changed to Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2005. Wilma screwed up the original date.

Let's get some anti-development people in this time folks. Let's get some politicians in who actually listen to their constituents. Enough with Manny Diaz and all those people who never saw a high rise they didn't
like. I wish Johnny Winton was running, I think his days are numbered. Maybe he could get a job working for the Home Depot Corp., oh wait, I think he is already.

ACS 'Relay for Life' in Grove

The Coconut Grove Relay For Life of 2006 is now in the planning stages and they are looking for volunteers. This is an annual event held in the Grove-- last year at Peacock Park. This year the event will be held on March 24-25, 2006 at La Salle High School.

Relay For Life is a celebration of life in honor of those touched by cancer. Relay For Life also raises funds for the American Cancer Society’s programs of research, education, advocacy and service – programs that can reduce cancer deaths and cancer incidence, and improve the quality of life for those touched by cancer.

This is a true community event where people of all ages and from all walks of life come together for a common cause. You can walk, jog or run relay style. Friends, relatives, local businesses, hospitals, schools, churches, service clubs and other organizations organize teams of 10-15 people. Each team member is asked to raise a minimum of $100 before the event.

Food, fun and camaraderie are part of the Relay For Life experience. There is the opening ceremony and first lap called the ‘victory lap’. You'll cheer on local cancer survivors, friends, family and co-workers who have survived cancer. There is also a more solemn aspect of the event during the Luminaria ceremony. This is an emotional candle-lighting ceremony to honor those who have survived cancer and to remember those who have not.

To get involved, please contact Kellie Wilcox at 305-779-2872, or email:
Kellie.Wilcox@cancer.org

Halloween didn't happen

So Wilma screwed up Halloween. The downtown Grove area was dead last night. There was none of the usual frivolity. McFarlane Road is usually packed with partiers, last night it was dead, with just a few cards trying to navigate the dark streets.

Cocowalk had some people, but it was nothing like in previous years.

There were police cars on practically every corner, not sure why since the curfew was lifted by the mayor earlier in the day.

Wilma was bad, but FPL is worse. It is so eerily dark in parts of the Grove. Even too eerie for Halloween.
