Dinner Key repairs are slow going

Dinner Key Marina looks so pretty from afar, but if you get up close you can see that damage from Hurricane Irma in September 2017 still exists.

Over half of the docks there were damaged and repairs are expected to be completed at the end of 2021. Kearns Construction Company was chosen by the city to do the work, which will be $23 million, probably more.

Three proposals came in, one from Dock and Marine Construction Corp., another from Marina Utilities Inc., and the third from Kearns. Kearns is the lowest responsible bidder at this point. Their total bid: $16,880,381 plus extras for piers 1, 3 and 8 at a cost of $3,919,619, there is also an owner’s contingency allowance for $1,688,038.

The job is being done in three phases - "hurricane related repairs" and "non-hurricane related repairs."

Residents who use(d) the docks are furious at the ineptness of the slowness of the project.

The City dragged its feet because of lack of funding. The city's insurance was not enough to cover the job. They're hoping FEMA will reimburse a large chunk of the money, including money from grants, matching funds and insurance.

You have barely scratched the surface of the city’s ineptitude. Why was this revenue producing asset not insured? Where is the money going to come from. It seems the city administration is playing “cover your ass”. And no one responds with any answers like our commosioner Ken Russell. I have emailed his office numerous times with nothing but silence in response. The tax papers deserve better.

To those of us with boats at Dinner Key almost feels like the city wants to purposely destroy the marina though neglect and incompetence to a point where they have to sell it to developers.

They lost over half their revenue stream, yet they didn’t lay a single person off and they treat tenants who are still there - the ones whose rents were hiked by the City Commission, last year - like crap (the nicer employees just sort of tolerate you).

I know that boat owners haven’t gotten a lot of sympathy on this blog, but if you look at the revenue for DKM, you will see that it has, in the past, been one of the City’s only profit centers. As the commenter above noted, how on Earth is it possible that they didn’t have adequate insurance???

Is that not exactly the same thing done to the Playhouse? Neglect and mismanagement by design because the citizens pay for it.

Kearns did the Monty marina, correct? I think they did a great job there.
