Getting ready for the Coconut Grove Arts Festival

I stopped by the Coconut Grove Arts Festival gallery this week where they were judging the art for the upcoming February festival. It's that time of year again - every October the judges do their thing.

Katrina Delgado, Director of Artist Services said that as of today, there will be 119 artists invited that have never participated in the Coconut Grove Arts Festival before. Those 119 artists, representing 1/3 of the show, hail from four different Countries (USA, Canada, Bahama and Venezuela) and 25 different states. Twelve of the 119 are from Miami and have never shown their work in a Miami Arts Festival.

“The artist selection process is the most important obligation we have all year. It is imperative we keep the selection process pure. The integrity of the Coconut Grove Arts Festival as a fine arts juried show depends on it," says Monty Trainer, president of the festival.

“Close to 1000 artists from across the nation and representing different counties apply to our Festival annually.  We engage two panels of highly respected judges to carefully review the work of these artists, and based on a criteria of creativity and artistic excellence choose the participating 350 artists for that year," said Lilia Garcia,  Arts Festival Board Chair.

The Coconut Grove Arts Festival is February 16, 17 and 18, 2019 where art, fun, food and so much more take over the streets of Coconut Grove.

Arts Festival Facts:
350 Artists from 6 Countries
42 States
107 from Florida
24 from Miami-Dade County
43 Artists that have done the Arts Festival for 10+ years
3 have participated over 30 years
More than 88% of the artists have participated for less than 10 years.

2 panels of highly respected judges. How many per panel, respected by whom? Just wondering. Because after year, after year, after year I've carefully attended the Grove "arts" fest, for over 15 years now, the QUALITY of the "art" doesn't seem to get much better. Does it.

According to me, of course. A less "respected judge", I suppose, but ask anyone with a minimum sense of aesthetics or college educated in Arts.

Anyone will also tell you that I has become a cheap sale of hotdogs, arepas, food and crappy entertainment. Heck, the air is just filled with cheap food smoke, everywhere, from downtown to 27th ave.

I guess that's where the Art 'connoisseurs" and our lamentable society is headed: Greek Gyros and a fake photograph with 20,000 cheap replicas.

Sledge, now, wait a sec. Parking cars about 30 years ago I profited $2,700.00, sub-contracting out vacant lots and yards. Another year, about that time I pocketed about $2,300.00, each time only charging $5.00 per, CAN U IMAGINE, I lost 5 lbs. I lived on a main road leading down from where Home Depot is, think then it was Zayers. Other times I sold art in front of my home. At a flea market I purchased 22,000 cobalt blue bottles for 5 cents and an equal number of red silk roses and married them. It took me about 10 years to sell them all, one at a time as folks walked by my home. Now days I do the Gifford Lane Art show, which I feel is far superior, so I agree with your analogy, to the Coconut Grove Art Show, plus we get David's cucumber gin punch, which my wife won't allow me to drink.
