What happened to the turning lane?

It appears that the renovations on Bird Avenue are being done without much thought or planning, or perhaps this is the plan.

They have been putting in medians or planter islands or whatever you call them in turning lanes! If you look at this photo, you'll see that driving west at 32nd Avenue, next to the Home Depot parking lot, there used to be a turning lane where you would turn onto 32nd toward US1. Now there is a planter/island in the turning lane - there is no turning lane!

People have been getting in that lane and then when it's too late for them to exit the lane, they are stuck with a planter/median marker in front of them. They can't turn!

With all the construction and excess traffic these days, you would think they would make it easier to get around. Even parking - almost daily, they remove parking spaces.

Did you know that those parking spaces on Virginia Street next to CocoWalk that are blocked now due to construction are not coming back? Nope, the sidewalks will be widened to accommodate the new CocoWalk, a private business, so six or seven parking spaces will be gone for good. More on that soon.

But for now, let's see if trees appear in the planter/island now on Bird, which would be totally less than smart. I guess the only way to get around fast is to use a Bird, scooter that is. Oh wait . . .

Thanks for writing about this everytime I drive around I mean to take a picture but as I am driving it has been impossible to get a good one. Everytime I leave home depot/milans I drive over one of the planters as right know there is not enough space for large cars like suv to turn right.
I do not understand the purpose of the planters specially the one on the corner of bird and 32nd,not sure if they are planning to eliminate the right turn to 32nd (which would be insane) and even if they keep it I think this will create more traffic as the cars turning right will have to stay on the middle line. I am hoping they have a purpose that do not affect the traffic as it is already pretty bad!

you think they would have learned they're lesson from the commodore st fiasco. Now everyone is going to cut thru the home depot parking lot and create a logjam. Thanks city planners!

I'm sure those trees will bring everyone such happiness while they are stuck in backed up traffic on that road.

I can’t state the number of times per week that I look at my wife and say “only in Miami”. I am getting really tired of the utter stupidity of the City. Having lived in a number of other cities throughout the country the norm is you suffer through construction for the future relief provided by the improvements once they are completed here it is suffer through construction and then suffer more when it is completed! I think as a community we should focus our complaints and efforts toward positive changes rather than obstructing changes we can’t stop. While we were all focused on developers and tree canopy - our city leaders cause more and more preventable problems for the future! I used to think it was all due to kickbacks but now I am beginning to realize it is just plain stupidity!

Those were parking spots... people would speed along parking spots to turn right. Regardless, that little median is going to cause an accident. I feel that our city planners may actually live in Alaska and never see what they are doing first hand.

Remember when folks voted on whether or not to allow HD to open here in the Grove? Most voted against it and here it is. The subject matter were trucks, trucks and more trucks coming into the Grove from U.S. # 1 onto 32'd the left on Bird then into the HD unloading ramp - - - - well, perhaps someone at CITY remembers that situation and presto, how can truck now enter and exit. Plus they can't now bring in those 40 footers and must use 20 footers. I think now they will have to come down Bird from the North, somewhere down 27th Ave, Right at Big Daddy's or some small street between 27th and 32'd then right on bird to the HD ramp. GOOD, BAD OR UGLIER. Jobie Steppe

I’ve witnessed, on 2 separate occasions, cars having to be towed after exiting The Hone Depot onto Bird and getting stuck in the planter. Not only do they remove a turning lane, they’re improperly positioned where anyone making the entry can easily ride over them. Mark my words - whatever plants are placed in them WILL have a trench of tire tracks over them!
