Another old theater being saved in Brooklyn
There's an interesting article in the NY Times about the Pavilion Theater in Park Slope, Brooklyn. The 1928 theater is being renovated and they are being careful to preserve the few architectural details that have been left over the years like elaborate ceiling panels, intricate molding and marble steps that were covered in carpeting through the years.
A secret staircase was uncovered and also antique balconies.
The Pavilion is a movie theater, not a playhouse. The new incarnation will be called the Nitehawk, a sister theater to another one saved in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The Times says about the project, which is scheduled to open in February or March 2018, that they are "Obstacle Modernizing the building while preserving its historical details."
It seems to be the norm in most cities on how the theaters are being renovated - without adding more stories or parking garages or anything, other than the renovation of the theater itself.
I bring this up to remind you of a meeting on October 26 regarding the Coconut Grove Playhouse, where the City Commissioners will hear the appeal of the current plans for the playhouse, which the City's HEP Board approved, which call for demolition of the main theater and other areas of the historic structure. The meeting starts at 9 am at City Hall (3500 Pan American Drive).
