I would add in Center Grove:
Pret A Manger
Au Bon Pain
Panera Bread
Chick-Fil-A
Chipotle
To start with.

I agree - great suggestions. But I would be happier if we got just a great locally owned grab and go sandwich shop/deli, a great locally owned grilled and fried chicken sandwich shop, and a great locally owned burrito shop. No need to patronize chains when they add nothing special.
I always thought that the best use of the old Guess space would be a bi-level food hall with local vendors. An Italian food hall is opening in Brickell City Center, Lincoln Eatery on the beach, another in Little Haiti, and a spinoff of New Orleans' St. Roch Market in the Design District. Would love to see Zak the Baker open a deli, Yardbird open a chicken sandwich stand, and Blue Collar bring a kiosk selling their breakfast burrito.

If I owned the Grove, I would add in Center Grove:
1. Bar Taco (look it up. from Connecticut)
2. Barcelona (same owners of Bar Taco)
3. Potbelly Sandwich Shop. Franchise but doesn't feel like it.
4. After dinner Bar/Lounge
5. Some sort of entertainment place. High end comedy/karaoke/cabaret or something like that.
Up north and most of North America has harsh winters, therefore most chain restaurants have been built around four seasons. Miami is still a major tourist destination and locals should be encouraged to open small businesses to offer a local unique flavor. High rents and chain stores will turn us into a bland and unremarkable destination.
Really, five chain restaurants? LAME. Just got to any crappy mall for those.
And ditto on Jimmy Johns, that owner is a jerk big game hunter who had his sandwich makers sign non-competes.
Ditto on the Ugh Lame comments on the chain stores. Please let's not allow the chains to move in and homogenize the Grove into another bland food court. What makes it special are the locals who turn out fantastic restaurants and shops with individual character. A place where you can get to know the owner. Agree, if you like chain food, go to the mall on your way to Walmart.
You want corporate-owned chain restaurants in the Grove??!! Where you can get the same food in any city at the same restaurant, no mystery there - soup is shipped in powder form and the instructions say "just add water!" OMG Please tell us you were just joking.
I would like a good steak house!

If I owned the Grove I would reduce the rents to a level that unique individually owned businesses and restaurants and delis could afford to take the risk of opening. Until then, if one of the ones Tom named were open, I'd undoubtedly go there, and so would you. Remember when Silvano opened "To Market to Market"? How many years ago was that?
Completely agree - no to cheap chains - original & local is the way to go. Would love to see pasión del cielo, Pubbelly in some version and a burrito & cocktail place from cantina la veinte team.
This blog is the first to complain about homogenized architecture and THOSE are the eateries you picked for the Grove? Airport food?

I am in shock. Is this the person who lauds the uniqueness of the Grove and decries cookie cutter houses and buildings?
What do you think all those restaurants are? None of them would encourage anyone to come to the Grove.
The closest to a chain that should be allowed in the Grove are restaurants like Harry's Pizza that is locally owned and can only be found in the Miami area. Sushi Maki was a good choice for the Grove because it too is locally owned and can only be found in the area.
Why would anyone want to come to a chain restaurant in the Grove and pay for parking when they can drive a few miles and park close by for free.
And the new name would be "Coconut Grove Gone"
maybe one of five. Definitely not all five. That would be disastrous. Plus Au Bon Pain and Panera Bread are terrible. Pret a Manger sounds terrible. Chipotle would be fine and Chick Fil A would make no sense since it's a drive through fast food restaurant and i can't think of a location where it could work in the grove unless it was on Bird or Grand on the way into the grove.
J. Kay, have you ever been to Pret A Manger? Doesn't sound like it. Out of all five of these, this is the best. The food is fresh and lots of variety. All healthy stuff. LIke the California Club, the soup, the steel cut oatmeal, etc.
