Fighting the slumlords

In Brooklyn, two slumlords were found guilty by a judge of forcing out rent-stabilized tenants to raise the rent to market prices. They were ordered to pay $250,000 to the tenants.

Joel and Amrom Israel admitted in court that they schemed to destroy apartments, get the tenants out and then raise the rents for new renters.

I'm not sure how they destroyed the apartments and then raised the rent, but I assume they renovated the apartments after getting the tenants out.

Reminds me so much of the issue in Village West where neighbors are fighting an alleged slumlord, who is doing the same thing, but in this case, he wants to sell off the properties for high-end development.

I have a friend who was victim to the same thing in the Center Grove. My friends asked for an AC repair and were evicted instead. They just left Miami, which is what so many longtime Grove residents are choosing to do.

Every case has its own facts. If the landlords here are doing something illegal then they should be punished or face civil penalties. If they are not, then it is their right to do what they wish with their property. Raise rents, sell to developers, and yes even evict a month to month tenant without cause, provided proper notice is given. The government has no right controlling rents. They don't tell Publix what they can charge for bread, or control what it costs for advertising space on this site. This is a free market capitalist society where the market determines the prices not the government. Its not the landlords responsibility to provide housing that never increases with inflation, rising taxes, and rising insurance costs. Property values go up, rents go up - costs go up, rents go up. That's the way it works.

Dude They are slumlords who need to keep the place up. Forget the law as many many get away with not keeping up places. It is pitiful. Agree it is not about rent control, but you owe your tenant a safe and clean place
