It's all about our history

I mentioned the new marker in front of the library last week, but that is not the only new marker here in Coconut Grove. Eight new Florida Historical Markers have been or will be installed throughout the Grove. The Coconut Grove Civic Club, founded in 1923, procured the signs from the Florida Department of State, Division of Historical Resources, and donated them to be placed at the Coconut Grove Playhouse, Coconut Grove Library, Housekeepers Club of Coconut Grove/Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove, Pan American Seaplane Base and Terminal Building, US Coast Guard Air Station at Dinner Key, Mariah Brown House, Evangelist Street/Charles Avenue, and the E.W.F. Stirrup House. This is part of a program to promote cultural tourism, education and awareness of historic sites commemorating important elements of the city’s history.

Here is a map of the locations around town, if you click on the map, it will open larger.

It seems a bit ironic that all these signs are being installed to help celebrate Coconut Grove's historic heritage, while we keep demolishing our past, extending Brickell South Condos, split zoning for more density, building more McMansions and bigger contemporary white boxes! Pretty soon all of our history will be history. And all we shall have left are a few signs that will remind us of history that we have lost.
