Welcome to Grove Bay Grill

Scotty's Landing is now Grove Bay Grill, the new company took over this weekend. I spoke with Francesco Balli, partner in the Grove Bay Hospitality Group that owns the restaurant. Francesco tells me that they don't own the Scotty's Landing name and so they had to change the name of the restaurant, new signs will be installed this week.

I asked him about the kitchen, which seemed to be a concern of Scotty's patrons.  He said, "Beginning on day one and over the course of the next few weeks, we’ll be making improvements to the equipment in the kitchen and bathrooms. We’re bringing in new equipment and making overdue repairs to others. Extensive cleaning was done on day one and we’ve engaged a professional restaurant cleaning company to clean the entire restaurant each and every day."

And the menu? "The menu is similar and we will be making improvements to the quality of the food over the next few weeks. Somethings we changed on day one, mostly having to do with food handling and food safety. Other things we will be implementing involve our company’s best practices and training," he said.

Grove Bay Grill will be setting up a new point of sale system in a few weeks, and a robust training program will specifically focus on service. They call it Exceptional Hospitality. According to Francesco, it won't happen overnight but they expect people to start noticing differences in the food and service over the next few weeks.
Dogs on leashes are still allowed and the hours of operation are all the same.

I stopped by Saturday, around sunset, and the place was hopping. People were having a good time and it was business as usual.

Seems like all good news. Will they spice-up the live music a bit? The same 2 or 3 small bands have been playing there the same exact songs, over and over again since the beginning of Time. Plus our own Grove Solar Dogs were mysteriously kicked out, go figure.. Variety is the spice of life.

The new owners - and this blog post - clearly articulates the service, food quality, and cleanliness issues that plagued the old Scotty's. That underlies the conflict that Scotty's patrons have had for years: we loved the location and vibe of the place. And HATED the absurdly bad service and half-assed kitchen. Hopefully the new owners can remedy the problems the old owners didn't have the sense to remedy, yet still maintain the vibe and neighborhood feel; I'd hate to see it turn into a tourist trap with a chain feel.

This blog post articulates everything that was wrong with he old Scotty's - absurdly poor service, food quality that was just "meh" and a lack of cleanliness. And that's the conflict long-time Scotty's patrons faced: we LOVED the view and the vibe...and HATED the indifferent service. Hopefully the new owners can remedy the cleanliness and service issues, yet still maintain the casual vibe and neighborhood feel. I'd hate to see it take on a chain-like feel.

Hopefully this will also serve as a warning to other small proprietors: You can't ignore your customers complaints and expect to survive. If Scotty's had a reputation for caring about their customers, when they lost their lease they would simply have moved somewhere in downtown Coconut Grove. But given how shabbily they treated their customers, does anyone think that without the waterfront view, ANYONE would want to go to Scotty's? Good riddance old Scotty's ownership; you were too rude to too many of us for too many years.

Aren't you the same people who said life would cease to exist in Coconut Grove without Scotty's. I'm just sayin!

If the new owners actually clean the kitchens and bathrooms, but more importantly make sure all employees wash their hands after using the toilet then I might start eating there again instead of just having a beer.

For what it is it's fine. It's a dive bar which happens to be on the water. You don't eat at dive bars.

Great to hear. Amazing how everyone was predicting gloom and doom, and it looks like they'll just be making it better.

I could never understand the intense loyalty people felt towards Scotty's. Yeah, the location is great, but the food was nothing special and the service sometimes bordered on hostile.

Glad to know that we might be able to enjoy some improvements.

Scotty's mens bathroom was disgusting. It was toxic. Did the new people clean it?

It seems to me strange that everyone forgot that it's going to be torn down sooner or later - correct ? At least the new owners are utilizing the space as opposed to empty stores in the grove waiting for new tenants. As they say - be careful what you wish for because you may get it - you now got a new Scotty's that you are going to miss even more when it's gone!

I liked Scotty's; I liked Captain Dick's too, which was in that location before Scotty took over. (I also remember 99-cent breakfasts at Monty's -- back in the day.)

I agree it wasn't a great menu, but it was the last place in Dade County where someone could get an affordable meal while sitting on the bay.

It was a great place for boaters to go get a drink and a bite to eat after a day on the bay.

But now, I'm afraid it'll become a place more for yachties and seasonal condo-dwellers rather than boaters or the un-affulant.

It'll be cleaner, it'll have better food and better looking and friendlier waitstaff, but I'm afraid it'll be less of what I enjoyed about "our" Scotty's -- even with its warts and all.

Couldn't agree more. I remember mentioning how hot the bathroom was to Scotty and his response was "if you don't like it, don't come here anymore". Good riddance!
