Coyo Taco coming to Coconut Grove

HOLD ON, THIS MAY NOT BE ACCURATE. READ THIS.

One of the best, if not the best taco places in Miami is coming to Coconut Grove. Coyo Taco is setting up shop at the former Johnny Rockets space at Grand and McFarlane. There will be life on that corner again! It's still up in the air whether they will use the name Coyo Taco, but it makes sense, since it's a well known name with a large following.

Chef Scott Linquist is the star at Coyo Taco; he uses locally sourced items and makes the organic food the best around. I was there for lunch at the Wynwood location yesterday (2300 NW 2nd Avenue). I had the best fish taco I have ever eaten. The salads are huge, and healthy. There is a big staff and everyone is very happy and pleasant. Their next door neighbor in Wynwood is Panther Coffee, so they should be right at home in Coconut Grove with Panther being practically across the street.

The plan is to open the Grove location by October and the idea is to have it as a pop-up restaurant. It may be around six months, it may be around two years. It's up to the leases in the area as the plan for the building is to have that whole corner from the Goose around to the pizza place, be one large restaurant with a liquor license.

The manager at Coyo told me that they are coming to Coconut Grove and that he expects long lines in the Grove, same as in Wynwood. I believe him. Coyo is an experience, it's not just a grab and go place. It's where the neighborhood meets and eats. The way it works is you order from their large menu, then sit down with a number at your table, sort of like Fat Burger does. They bring the food over and you enjoy. Wynwood has some small tables but there is a very large shared table in the center of the room, sort of like Panther Coffee in Wynwood has.

This is very exciting news for Coconut Grove. It's an upscale taco place with reasonable prices. The tacos come in pairs, it should possibly be three, to fill you up, but I guess a pair gives you the opportunity to try something else great on the menu.

Just recently Conde Nast Traveler called Coyo Taco one of the Best Restaurants in Miami. From the article: "At Coyo, you'll find guacamole 'smashed to order,' tortillas handcrafted on site, and fountain sodas spiked with tequila. Nab a communal table seat with a trio of tacos, including quinoa-queso fritters, carnitas de pato (crispy duck), and cochinita pibil(slow roasted pork shoulder, achiote, habañero pickled onions)."

Their menu is here.

So we can add Coyo Taco to the new restaurants soon to open in Center Grove; along with Coyo is The Spillover, the highly anticipated seafood place by LoKal, which will be at the Mayfair Promenade; Glass & Vine, from The Eating House people, opening at The Glass House, Harry's Pizzeria, another Wynwood favorite, opening on McFarlane Road at the Engle building, across from Coyo and Farinelli 1937, similar to Harry's opening at Grand and Commodore Plaza.

This should bring down all commercial rent prices everywhere else in the Grove.

Obviously, on 31333 Land, the inextricable Laws of Supply & Demand work inversely.

I love that new businesses are coming here but I hope we don't get an exact replica of Wynwood, would love to see some new ideas here in the Grove!

You forgot to add to your list of new restaurants entering the Grove market the opening of Mandolin on Commodore and a much needed vegan/vegetarian/juice place, Choices, coming to the old Flavour building on McFarlane Road. Choices will also have a natural/organic food market with many of the things you now have to go to Whole Foods to get.
