Lack of planning from way back

Regarding the story I posted called Selfish Disregard for History, I'd like to make it clear I am not picking on the younger generation, I am just responding to comments in this blog and emails I have received and even face-to-face conversations.

But this lack of planning and disregard for all of Miami was made evident to me recently by someone who works for AT&T. He told me that one reason we don't have up-to-date fiber optics and other state-of-the-art networks is because the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County were built without a plan. Buildings and developments were put up anywhere there was empty land, there was no regard for city planning. I was told that Austin, TX, for instance is perfectly aligned because the city was planned, they have the best state-of-the-art internet, water, sewer, etc.

So it's ironic that the people who want the change most, claiming that it's moving forward into the 21st Century are actually lacking big time when it comes to 21st Century technology, all because of non-stop, non-planned growth in South Florida.

And this is an exact quote from the Selfish Disregard for History story, with the lack of spelling and grammar skills in tact, this person is speaking, or at least trying to converse for the younger generation:

I agree its the old people of the grove mainly the artsy fartsy ones that have destroyed the grove.the younger demo love the look of the grove we just sudgested bringing back the life of the grove not tearing it down for profit. but onces again the grape needs an escape goat. im sure this wont be published but at least youll see it.

I think that says it all.

Lack of planning? No way!! Look at the Perfect plan they all had for the 27Av Destruction.

It will only take about 8 years to "finish" the ongoing mess. 4 blocks. Lots of RFP juicers reaaaaallly getting rich there.

So there is a better reason which your AT&T guy failed to understand: government tax incentives. The city of Austin (and state of texas) incentivized AT&T to bring fiber there after Google started. So Google paved the way in Austin, but AT&T didn't want to be left in the dust and invested the capital required to build.

To build out a city like miami with Fiber is billions of dollars. Mind you FPL Fibernet already runs arteries of fiber optics throughout the city, most major streets have it running under them. It is the last "mile" which companies like comcast or at&t or verizon don't feel pressure to invest in because they don't have to or want to spend the money yet.

I haven't read the other post, but will go in and comment there in regards to that.
