Join the first bike tours/rides of the new year

Two free bike events in Coconut Grove are behing held on Saturday, January 3. The BID is sponsoring it's usual monthly tour and Mack Cycle is doing their longer rides.

You have two choices, the Mack Cycle / Everglades Bicycle Club ride starts at 7:30 am. They are meeting at City Hall (3500 Pan American Drive) and then heading outside the Grove - for miles.

This ride has different levels of participants. The Beginner/Intermediate riders will ride to the Deering Estate, Intermediate riders will go to Black Point Marina and the Advanced group will go to Black Point Marina and beyond. Round trip that is 28, 38 and 38 to 62 miles respectively. They have rides from other destinations coming up this year on Saturdays and Sundays, including many more from City Hall.

They also have charity rides coming up. Check with Sue at Mack Cycle for more info and details at sue@mackcycleandfitness.com

The first free BID bike tour of Coconut Grove, staying inside the Grove, and much tamer than the Mack ride, is Saturday, January 3 from 9:30 am until noon.

It's theme is "Botanical Wonderland."

From the promo: "Ride through the beautiful tapestry of tropical flora that characterizes The Great Green Grove. As we explore verdant lanes, learn about the area's plant explorers, botanists, and gardening enthusiasts who traveled the world seeking strange and unusual flora to bring back home. See a rare example of the indigenous tropical hardwood forests that once covered the region, with endangered orchids, ferns, and other wildlife at the Barnacle State Historic Site. Your guide will point out exceptional trees, vines, flowers, and palms seen in the neighborhood. Hints on creating and maintaining eco-friendly landscaping will also be shared during the tour."

Meet at the corner of Main Highway and Franklin Avenue around 9:15 am. Bring your own bike, sunblock and water. Advanced registration required here.

Nice, for certain folks. Except these rides and the elderly EBC are just like the Grove: very old. Just watch: the average "cyclist" there is about 60 y/o.

FYI, for younger cyclists, there are rides off South Miami or the Circle every day, no need to belong to any "clubs", all speeds, all distances.
