Vizcaya bicycle sharing station being planned

Vizcaya’s 2016 Centennial is approaching, and they're focused on enhancing the estate as a vital community asset. To support the increasing pedestrian and bicycle activity in the area, they are now working to accommodate a solar-powered, bicycle sharing station at the NW corner of the intersection of SW 32 Road and South Miami Ave. The proposed Vizcaya station would be part of a citywide bicycle-sharing program provided by DecoBike, which has successfully developed a comparable program throughout Miami Beach. The DecoBike station would consist of a payment kiosk and a rack to hold 16 bicycles (a Miami Beach station is shown in this image).

Vizcaya will receive no revenue by accommodating the bicycle sharing station, but they support it to provide a recreational amenity and convenient bicycle transport for residents and visitors. The Vizcaya station, for example, will connect the neighborhood to the Central Grove and Brickell areas. To learn more about the Miami-wide project and Vizcaya’s role in it, drop by the NW corner of SW 32 Road and South Miami Ave, Thursday, March 20, 2014, between 4:30 and 5:30 pm and meet representatives from DecoBike and Vizcaya.

A book I'm reading titled "The Blue Zone" reveals how folks in 5 parts of this world live to an average healthy age of about 100 because the community has walkways throughout w/drinking stations, friendly conversation and locations where folks can stop, relax and chat!? Surely our CG area is & is slowly producing such an environment - - - - so get out and enjoy life.

Excellent initiative, but do they offer Helmets though? Miami is still way too dangerous for us cyclists, especially visitors who don't know the area and might be used to much safer cites with proper infrastructure.

Helmets do save our lives here, I've cracked 2 of them through the years. I cringe every time I see well-intentioned folks gingerly strolling by unprotected here,,,, one of the deadliest cites for cycling.

Sure, 1st you'll get the helmets, then the knee and elbow protective gear, safety goggles, leather pants & jacket to avoid scraps and bruises, ear plugs for bugs, a pack of band aids, steel toe boats, teeth braces, flashing lights both forward & rear, lessons on how to hog the roadways riding 3/4 abreast, etc, etc, etc - - - anything else?

Just to clarify, Vizcaya is not opening the bike sharing station this week as the title of this posting suggests. We are holding a meeting to present the idea to our neighbors per the content of the article. Thank you Coconut Grove Grapevine for helping us spread the news.
