Is the new dockmaster building too large?

Photo courtesy of McHarry Associates, project architect
As you drive down South Bayshore Drive now, without the Expo Center blocking your view, you can see the new dockmaster building. At first I thought it was a CVS or Walgreens, it's so large. The plans call for a 9700 square foot building, but I was advised by Wendy Jaramillo, Public Relations Specialist of Capital Improvements and Transportation Program (CIP)  for the City, that the structure is 11,296 square feet now.

It seems a bit ridiculous at first, but when you think that the marina is the largest wet slip marina on the east coast, with 2000 wet slips and dry storage for boats, maybe an impressive structure is what's called for.

The waterfront is the home to the best winter sailing with regattas spreading out over three months and this would be a great resource for them, but then I was reminded that this marina has nothing to do with the regattas. It consists of private boat slips for very large boats.
But, the new building will incorporate, demonstrate, and educate users and visitors on practical sustainable design concepts tailored to the South Florida and Florida Keys environment. In this regard, the project is tracking a Silver Level certification from the US Green Building Council. I still question such large structures at the water's edge (this is 50 feet back by law), still too close for comfort.

I would like to work in the nice new big building. We can also use it as a lighthouse.

They did it to spite CI because of the constant water view complaints.

The more concrete they can put in to block the water, the better. A small minority will surely enjoy it.

Let's build an even bigger structure right at the Seminole boat ramp too. Preferably with a Heliport on top, so people can fly and rediscover the Bayside.

Once again it appears that unknown forces are at work. The current Dockmaster's office building is probably around 2000-3000 sf. What reason could there be to build a new Dockmaster's building at roughly 4 times the size of the existing? What uses are planned for this building that were not part of the older building? Also note that Sarnoff has repeatedly stated there is "no money" for Regatta Park"..Yet this new Dockmaster building will cost over $20,000,000. to construct...chances are when all is said and done it will cost close to $25,000,000. That is based upon a simple calculation of roughly $200. per SF x 11,000 SF..PLUS another $50/SF or so for interior Furniture fixtures and the Like. How does Sarnoff and his clan justify such an incredible expense in light of his stated lack of funds for other projects both in Coconut Grove and in Miami in general, including Regatta Park? Once again make no mistake about it this building is intended for uses we know nothing about at this point. Sarnoff continues to remake the City according to his ill conceived ideas.. Like it was once said.." follow the money..." Someone, probably a friend of Sarnoff states to profit handsomely from the construction and use of this new building at the expense of the Village of Coconut Grove. Once again Coconut Grove loses and Sarnoff wins. This man's abuse of our Village knows no bounds.

Dear Charles, is it just your opinion that Mr. Sarnoff & evil & corrupt or do you have some/any facts and if so, then do something about it or keep your opinions to yourself.

3:12, I think Al Crespo, Eye on Miami, sometimes this blog, and many others have documented the Commissioner's evilness and corruptness. Instances of lying are well known, and slightly embarrassing. Promises not kept also seem to be recorded. Didn't he promise not to accept a pension? Was his home office fully legal? Did we ever find out what his residence is? I think that a couple of uninvolved witnesses saw him physically assault a critic.

Maybe all of this is not true. It looks like it is to me, but I could be wrong.

But what, precisely, should Charles do? It seems to me like he and others have facts.

Re: Sarnoff's corruption. Is it corrupt to foster things upon a community that does not want them. Grove Key/Grove Horror case in point. The Grove voted against it. How about the West Grove Trolley Barn.? Ask people in the West Grove how that came about. Think they are happy? How about the Walmart in Midtown? Same story. Sarnoff opposes the people who elected him. The Brickell Trees issue? No different. The new Port Tunnel? Virginia Key? Watson Island were he refused to give up even after Perez pulled out?.The zoning changes in the Upper East Side? Who is benefiting from the incresed density and doubling of the height restrictions..? . His support of the Marlin's Stadium? Sarnoff was NOT elected to work against his constituents. He was elected to represent the people of his district. ...not his well heeled developer cronies. Ask yourself about the "Sarnoff Foundation"? Where is that money coming from? How is it that he has money to throw around town but the City doesn't? Sarnoff is THE developer's Commissioner. He working for those interests... not yours. To me that is evil and corrupt. As to what I should do...? I will continue to work against this man whenever and wherever I can. He is the worst thing to happen to Coconut Grove and Miami in a very long time.

Is the new dockmaster building too large?

"Too large" is relative.

Most of our parents probably lived in 1,500 sq ft homes. And now that's considered inadequate.

What is being housed there? Just admin offices? Retail?

I'm against unnecessary development and waste - but I have yet to hear here that this is fact the case?

re; Sarnoff..He manipulated and deceived people in the Grove to get elected. He convinced people that he was anti-devolpment by his duplicitous acts in the "Home Depot" saga. Basically he mislead his followers by making them believe that Home Depot "could Not be built"...As an attorney he knew better. He simply lied to stir up emotions and a reputation for himself as one who would side with those who believed that the Home Depot was inappropriate. Once he was elected he turned his back on everyone who supported him and turned vehemently pro development no matter where or what was proposed. BTW I was not one of those people. Anyone who took five minutes to read the Zoning Code would have seen that "Home Depot" was an "as of Right" use. It could not be stopped. The end result of Sarnoff's "leadership " was to insure that the Grove got a lot less than it should have. Anyone who believes this man is anything but self serving is blind to the obvious truth.

It's the same old debate. The people in the Grove who say no to everything vs. those who have a vision and can get things done.

Hey Mystery Guy who complains about people complaining. Mr Corda at least sign his real name to his allegations.

No politician is going to please all his constituents but Sarnoff has the ability to go directly against thier their wishes and somehow keep his job. This mans power lies in lies. He is a master of obfuscation and rhetoric and quite possibly does the Razzle Dazzle song and dance from Chicago in front of his mirror every night.

Isn't it interesting how any time there is a Grapevine article on constructution developments in the Grove and folks come on here to voice their displeasure and dissatisfaction at what is going on or someone like Mr Corda makes statements as to a certain politician's mismanagement of his constituent's will, that there will appear anonymous posters who avoid the actual claims of misrepresentation and malfeasance and go directly to insulting, berating and dehumanizing any and all who would question the Sarnoff status quo.

At least Mr Corda has the balls to sign his name and not some nom de plume to his accusations. Do you?

PS. I recommend anyone reading this to Google the Razzle Dazzle scene from Chicago. It is total Sarnoff.

Anon 11:06, I agree [or] so it appears on this blog. Tom/Grape gives us a lot of news/info/events about our community, the Good, Bad & Ugly, but very few take the time to respond/comment & those with negative attitudes are drawn to blogs like nails to magnets. Most people love & enjoy our community and feel privileged to live here and voted for Mr. Sarnoff. But those negative comments don't originate in their minds and do stick out like a sore thumb.

@12:01 No, most people did not vote for Sarnoff. In fact, I think around 1,600 did in the last election. You may not realize it, but that's not most of the population of SD2.

So anon 2:57, you sit around reading blogs a lot, do ya? Nothing better to do, right?

And talk about intelligent writing "In fact, I think", now that's intelligent, right, take a hike dip stick. Sarnoff was voted into office and he has removed the rampant drug dealing on the streets of the Grove along with those bums who use to walk & bike through our neighborhoods unchallenged peering to see if a door was left ajar or anything of value was left in our yards. We're about to see some big time spenders throughout the Grove, our streets are being improved, sidewalks are being laid, safer trees are being planted, we have beautiful parks, beautiful views, the streets are clean, and their are great schools; hello!

"Safer trees" are being planted by Mr. Sarnoff ha. How many have been cut by him and his cronies in the Grove and Brickell? And that police station he put up in West Grove labeled by his foundation is a racist act in similar line as the trolley garage.

Hey Ron Nelson, are you billing the city for overtime to defend your boss on this site?

Most folks don't know yet that you're soon to move on to become a NET administrator - probably the Grove's NET administrator - which means that you'll be carrying out Sarnoff's instructions and continuing to cover his ass. That's right folks, Ron Nelson is one his way from being Sarnoff's Chief of Staff to becoming a new NET administrator.

As to the allegations concerning Sarnoff, you can start with his campaign flyers in his first campaign where he opposed more billboards - that was before be got elected and became Mr. Billboard.

Then there's the Traffic Circle, the Dog Park, the illegal law firm he operated out of his house that resulted in SIX - LET ME REPEAT THAT,6 SEPARATE NOTICES OF CODE VIOLATIONS before he was finally forced to move in with Jay Solowsky.

Then there are all the examples of how he's lied from the dais during City Commission meetings, to lying to the morons on the Ethics Commission about his and wifey's junket to Brazil, and then there's the $23,000 junket that he and wifey took to China paid for by the Chinese government, and of course all the nasty backroom deals that he's engaged in to support his developer pals including the spending of millions of dollars on the 1814 Brickell Avenue Park to help out Tibor Hollo.

And that's just for starters.

Coming soon on the Crespogram Report will be a lowdown on the Sarnoff Foundation. That's right, I'll be providing everyone with the info on who has given him money, and a bunch of other info you'll never see anywhere else.

So, as I've come to say, Marc Sarnoff is a lying weasel-dick sociopath, who has earned the name Commissioner "Pussy."

Al, your vulgarity indicates you have the mentality of a terd in a septic tank. Typical vulgar hot air Al. As usual you will provide nothing but talk, talk & more vulgarity. Mr. Sarnoff graduated from college, passed the bar & was elected to office by his peers. The obsessive fixation by way of public vulgarity you display herein upon Mark indicates an extreme, well you know Al, love/hate & it's very common!? Try chocolate & some flowers.

While, I confess I do not know what a "terd" is, I am guessing it would be something inelegant, and therefore reflective of it's author.

I think Al Crespo is a much needed and very valuable public gadfly.

His last election was a pity. No candidate against him, and there were at least a couple, could come near to Marc's fundraising. One seemed to have no particular reason to run although her name was relatively well known. The other one was rather unfocused and never got her campaign started. Those believe that Marc did not deserve a second term failed to unite behind one candidate, and nobody-- absolutely nobody-- came out to vote. That is certainly our fault.

Anyway, thank you Al, and keep going.

Sarnoff is the guy who told everyone who would listen that his grandfather was the famous founder of RCA, David Sarnoff. Once a reporter found the real Sarnoff family and they got wind of that lie Miami fake Sarnoff sure changed his bio fast. Another Sarnoff campaign promise was to fight visual pollution. Once billboard companies gave him money Lo and Behold he was their biggest backer. Lots of scams.

Oh,my! I must have really hit a nerve, because the lady, and I would bet a dollar to a donut that it would be a woman with weight problems of her own, who would go with.."and is obese in the extreme."

Also, while everyone knows I've robbed banks, only someone who's had access to my NCIS file would rattle off "jewelry stores, motels & automobile theft."

Fact is that I was never arrested and/or convicted of robbing any jewelry stores and/or stolen any cars, but like I said, those were accusations that only someone in law enforcement with access to my NCIS file would even know about.

Looks like someone's been illegally using their access to dig stuff up on me, and then sharing it.

Gee? I wonder who those someone(s) could be. Guess I'm going to have to see whose been abusing their NCIS privileges.

Anyhow, I'm still the only one in the room whose willing to stand up and identify myself, and yes I think Marc Sarnoff is all of those names and more.

He hoodwinked his way into getting elected to the Miami City Commission and has screwed his constituents a lot more than he has helped them.

What happened to civility? I agree, however I also feel it's good that Tom allows people to vet herein the Grape. This particular blog posting is about the new dock master's building causing a vulgar attack from Mr. Crespo, a convicted felon, against Mr. Sarnoff who's not mentioned in the blog. Mr. Crespo further comments some, probably a fat lady, has abused their privilege & he will have to dig to find out who. Not only is Mr. Crespo a vulgar terd in a septic tank, he's a dumb stupid self seeking terd because the info was taken directly from a New Times report titled Al
Crespo: Bank robber & justice seeker & I'm a skinny male. Mr. Crespo gets off [thinking] he has hit a nerve when in [fact] I'm just pumping out the septic tank, which I consider an act of civility - - - to clean out the odor, nothing more, nothing less. Mr. Crespo is vulgar herein because he's a vulgar x-felon from a vulgar prison environment who has not earned the [right] to be in the same room as Mr. Sarnoff, which is why he sounds off safely from his condo & I find that to be cowardly; am I clear Mr. Crespo? And I feel that for Tom to allow this exchange is very, very good/civil.
