Ethics training is the new thing at City Hall

I find it totally ironic that Mayor Tomas Regalado and Commission Chair Marc Sarnoff have just co-sponsored legislation requiring tough new ethics training for elected officials and lobbyists (to come before the City Commission on Thursday) and they still both have not responded to the question WHY WAS THE COCOANUT GROVE VILLAGE COUNCIL THROWN OUT OF CITY HALL?

I don't buy their party line about sharing the dais with other neighborhood groups; because as far as I know, no other group has requested it and the Village Council had a standing date for years now. The proper thing would have been to allow them to finish out the year before giving them the boot a day before they were to meet last month.

Ethics training? In this case it is the blind leading the blind when it comes to ethics.

The Village Council is meeting December 16 at Ransom Middle School, I'll post the info and full agenda here as it draws near. Some of the agenda includes a discussion and update on the Playhouse, an introduction of the new Police Commander and the 3 am / 5 am bar closing issue.

In order to correct me you would have to refer to your original story on this letter made reference to-----but, I thought I saw where the letter made note of all events after November 11, 2009.
The Coconut Grove Village meeting was scheduled for November 11, 2009. If my memory serves me November 11, 2009 isn't over until 12:00 midnight. Surely the Village would have conclued all business by midnight and could have used City Hall until midnight.

I just fell off my chair. Did you mention Sarnoff and "ethics" in the same sentence?
One more time for the people who may have missed it.
Here's what our "ethical" commissioner had on his official website for years; (check The New Times if you don't believe me)

"Work and live to serve others, to leave this world a little better off than you found it"- David Sarnoff (Father of popular mass communication).
"This quote is from the "General" David Sarnoff, who is also the grandfather of Marc David sarnoff, elected Commissioner of District 2
November 21, 2006"

Grape is this the same Marc Sarnoff that's supposed to train others in ethics?
If a man will lie about something as fundamental as who his grandfather is, how can you trust him, let alone allow him to train other elected officials?

A new mayor is about to take over after 8 years of another administration. The Commission is practically non existent, indictments are being issued to 2 standing commissioners and there are run offs happening for the other 2 seats. There is a new police chief that needs to be appointed, myriad other details to attend to. But the first order of the day-- or rather, before the day-- the new Mayor is even sworn in, is to create legislation that appears to be well-meaning and to the benefit of all neighborhood groups, yet it is at the immediate exclusion of one of the "neighborhood groups" that has worked diligently in facilitating communication between the City and the the largest group of constituents of one of its highest tax paying districts.

It is beyond obvious that the only reason that legislation was introduced before Regalado even became mayor was the result of a scramble to find a swift way to give the Village Council the Boot from City Hall while trying to appear that is not the actual intent, since there is no logical reason to have done so.

Dig a little deeper, perhaps to a certain entry in this blog announcing the meeting that was supposed to take place at City Hall on Nov. 12, and zero in on a comment about the identity of certain people coming in front of the Council being revealed and televised, and bingo! There's the source.

It is a shame that people on either side of the issue that drove the VC out of City Hall have such a high fear of voicing opinions that they have every right to give openly.

Does that mean that Regaldo is going to giv back the gas money, or the new Police Chief won't promote his nephew, I doubt it.

I think it is Regalado, not Grape, who burnt the bridge.

The same Tomas Regalado that

was accused of stealing gas on his city credit card

has a personal net worth of $5,000 but has a "secret" job with a media conglomerate and can't reveal his true salary

calls for "democracy" and public votes for mega projects but begged the Governor to appoint fill ins for commission seats

calls for "open government" but has a blank website with no information, ignores public records requests, and throws out the Coconut Grove Village Council from City Hall

who says he is "for the people" but lines his campaign coffers with lobbyist and developer money

who hires his family as campaign staff so he can keep all the campaign money in the family

who hires his same family to work for him at City Hall

who fires the police chief only to replace him with a union crony and his driver/relative as deputy police chief

This is the Mayor who calls for ethics???

It is always pleasing to see those who hide under the cloak of anonymity are the ones to sling mud and call for truth and ethical behavior.

When did Regalado ever "beg" for Crist to appoint? I only heard him make a comment about it. Then e "begged" the Commission and the Chairman to have an election.
The website...What does that have to do with openess? They are probably building it. didnt you see that staff reductions for 09? They cut the IT department a lot.
As far as developer money...what are you supposed to run a campaign with? So what?
You cant hire family in City Hall...there are laws against people getting paid for working there.

Funny how Anon comments in the internet become fact.

Did you guys know that we never landed on the Moon and that Regalado voting with the Grove so long was so Sarnoff can jump in later. Because he is a ROBOT made by Sarnoff

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Right!

No wonder Miami is so corrupt, happens right under our noses and people apologize for the politicians.

It's the PEOPLE who need ethics classes here!

Read the attachment on the ordinance.

The money is going to Dario Moreno, pollster for Regalado.

And, Joe Centorino (the State Attorney that handles public corruption) will also teach the course.

If this is not a conflict, I am not sure what is!

Why can't the Village Council record their meetings wherever they are, then put the video online, or show it on public access TV on tape delay?

They could even stream it online if they find a venue that could support it. I don't know where they could do it, but I'm sure there must be some place in Coconut Grove that could support it. Then they can shake off the yoke of City Hall, seeing as taking away their meeting place seems to be highly disruptive to their doings.

Good idea and we're doing it. In the process of updating the website to be much more informative and interactive. We're not going to let the city silence us and our representation of everyone in the grove.

You people supported Regalado! All of his moves up to now have been outrageous, and this is just the beginning. There is more coming...just you wait, we're not even a month into this. Good luck for the next 1428 days, but who's counting?

And let's see, has he delivered on anything he promised on his campaign? Maybe the Village Council needs to contact his new Office of Resident Affairs. One of his newly appointed cronies might be able to help you. Just don't hold your breath on it.

What a joke this city has become!!

Ok....so who else will the City do the class for? Anyone in Miami-Dade? Anyone in UM? Moreno is the pollster for EVERYONE.
