Protecting our tree canopy
You'll find the tree permit application and process listed along with phone numbers to report anything that you see that might be shady (no pun intended).
Many people in the neighborhoods contact me when it's too late, about destroyed greenery and the developers and builders and their employees are to blame. People just don't know that you cannot destroy trees in Coconut Grove.
The other day, a guy fell 15 feet from atop a tree that he was cutting down. Tree Watch is looking into this, as it is on private property, but still not allowed to be destroyed.
To find out if a tree has a permit, you can call 305-416-1551 or visit: http://portal.miamigov.com/landmanagement
The main email address and phone number for Tree Protection is Email: EnvironmentalRes@miamigov.com or Phone: 305-416-1400.
This is for all of the City of Miami. Not just Coconut Grove.
If in doubt, please call or email (calling of course, is faster). You'll remain anonymous and you just might be saving a large part of our tree canopy.
I'll leave a link to TREE PROTECTION at the top of the Grapevine next to the other links and you can refer to it whenever you need it. It will link to the Planning and Zoning website.

Is this just in the Grove? A large tree was cut down in my upper eastside neighborhood (a few feet from the street on a vacant lot) and I wanted to look into it.
Thanks.
All of the City of Miami. Call about the tree!
You have heard the saying… “It is often easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission”.
When dealing with an undesired tree, some property owners and developers unfortunately decide it is in their best interest not to pull a permit.
They accept the possibility that Code Enforcement may discover their illegal action and hold them accountable. But they are also confident in their advantageous odds of mitigating the fine to an affordable cost of doing business as usual.
Well, on the bright side, Crime must be way down or non-existent in the Grove. Seems the only concern lately are massive "Tree Massacres" all over. It's gonna turn into a desert very soon, the mangroves are virtually extinct already in Fla.
At least our very competent City Officials solved every other minor inconvenience, like endless construction everywhere or mysterious misuses of tax funds.

That can be resolved if the commission added in the city ordinance something like this: if a tree is removed without a permit for development or to clear and area for structures or to reduce green space then the fine will be tripled. But the commissioners will never do anything that would upset developers and builders ever. The residents and their beloved neighborhood trees can go screw themselves while the commissioners and their buddies plan their next outing in yachts.
The tree trimmers should be fined as well as the property owner. There are several great tree trimming companies in Coconut Grove that have good morals, & wont cut down trees without the proper permits. But there are obviouslly several companies out there that don't care. If they know they might be fined, we could save a our precious trees.
Grape 12:27, you displayed a coconut palm, which isn't a tree and isn't protected under the Miami Tree Ordinance. Perhaps the best approach for the Grove & the Grape is to answered this question. The Grove and most of Miami has a tree canopy as seen from the air. IF any tree is cut down and others replace it isn't that equitable? We never-the-less end up with trees, and a canopy, construction continues for the tax base, and gosh knows we need those taxes for example, those bike paths, etc., etc., and etc., the city needs money (taxes) can we here in the Grove/Grape not give them some slack? Just asking a question. Jobie Steppe
Look, I have a problem with property owners not being allowed to cut trees on their own property. It's their property, then it should be respected. If it's not respected, then it's not their private property. If it's my property then I should be able to dig a hole, cut a tree, or anything else on it. If it's not my property then it's public. Then its up to what people or government decide to do with it.
This anti-tree cutting philosophy/ laws are mild forms of socialism/communism/collectivism. In good old USSA!
