Get Summer Workout Smart
1) Hydration, Hydration, Hydration
Yes, it should be common sense to drink water, especially when exercising in the Miami heat. Too many people though don’t get enough to drink in a day causing headaches, soreness, and fatigue. Take your water bottle with you when you leave the house, but also stock up on hydrating fruits such as watermelon and cantaloupe.
2) Check out your map
No matter where your favorite running or exercise path takes you, make sure you think about your route in relation to the sun. To avoid an entire run in the blistering heat, run early in the morning, or later at night. If time is not negotiable, choose a route that stays a little more shady depending on the time of day.
3) Protect yourself
The sun in Miami is no joke, so don’t get caught without the proper sun protection. Apply sunscreen to all exposed areas (make sure it is sweat proof), and wear a hat or visor to protect your face.
4) Stretch it out
Use the rising temperatures to your advantage by trying your hand at yoga. As your body temperature increases, so does your ability to go deeper into a pose. Grab a friend and head to Kennedy Park on Saturday mornings for an awesome free yoga class.
5) Practice random acts of fitness
Summer is the perfect time to get out and get active! Sneak in a little extra fitness by doing things you love. Throw the Frisbee with your dog, take a bike ride around the neighborhood, wash your car, keep a garden, or get some friends together for some sand volleyball. Make it a goal to get out and get moving this summer for a healthier, happier you!
