Apparently we do have a "trolley," although it is called a Grove Circulator. I have seen these little ugly things moving through the Grove, I didn't know what they were. Lilliana Dones sent me this:Well Grape, actually we do have a Grove "trolley." It's called the Grove Circulator, (Route 249) and it trolls back and forth from the Douglas Metro Rail station, up Grand into downtown Grove, around McFarlane up S. Bayshore to City Hall then up Aviation into 27th Ave and into the Grove Metrorail station on 27th Ave. The whole thing takes about 15 minutes and during peak times it runs about every 15 minutes.
We've had this service since the same time the Gables got theirs, which was in 2002, in anticipation of Merrick Park. The thing is, the Gables got dibs on the ones that look like trolleys and we were left with the ones that look like little buses. At first it was free, but now it's 25 cents, which is still pretty good. I mean, what else can you get for 25 cents nowadays? Not even a stamp. But you can ride around the Grove. What's more, you can actually take the Grove Circulator from downtown Grove to the Douglas Metro Rail Station, get a transfer, walk across the platform and then take the Grove "Trolley" to Merrick Park, Miracle Mile or, as I did once to see my accountant, all the way to Ponce and 8th street. And back. For 25 cents. It is actually very convenient. There is a space in the front of the Circulator for putting your bike.
If we were to happen upon something like this in Berlin or Amsterdam, we would come back and write about how sorry it all is that we don't have something similar here. But we do! And I am frankly amazed that most who responded to your post did not know about the Circulator.
Imagine going from here to Miracle Mile for 25 cents! Alas, Miamians tend to equate mass transit, even with cute names such as "Trolley" or "Circulator" as "low rent." Which is too bad, really, because if we used MTA more, they may actually improve it, increase routes and run more frequently. They could extend the Circulator routes to Mercy Hospital, Vizcaya and Science Museum.
The upside of the whole economy going south is that we may actually adjust and start to live more like the Europeans, or even New Yorkers, and lose our fear of "mass transit." Which is a great thing really.
The schedule for the Cirulator is
here.
