Another Grove "Paint Out" to fill the streets

Looks like the GroveHouse Artists liked AnnaMaria's En Plein Air event so much that they have decided to do one themselves -- the sincerest form of flattery.

They are having their own "Paint Out" on December 6 and 7. I had wondered why most of the GroveHouse artists did not participate in AnnaMaria's event in October, guess they were holding back for their own, which I don't get because if I was a Grove artist, I would participate in all events for my own self-exposure and that of the good of the community. A few community-minded artists like Karen Deilke, are participating in both.

He whistles while he works -- non-stop!

There is this guy working at the Hiawatha Project, that Residences of Vizcaya condo thing (which is not anywhere near Vizcaya). Well, he blows a whistle all day long, I think to direct the workers.

One day soon, I am going to walk over and shove that freakin' whistle down his freakin' throat. Trust me. This is going to happen and I'll take pictures.

It's bad enough that they start at 7 am and wake the whole neighborhood up, even on weekends with that heavy machinery that beep, beep, beeps, every time they back up the machinery, which is like ever three seconds. But this whistle has got to go.

Art Nasal fundraiser is Tuesday night

“Art Nasal”, the premiere parody of Miami’s Art Basel art extravaganza is this Tuesday, December 2, at 7:00 pm at the Windisch-Hunt Gallery (2911 Grand Avenue).

Like Art Basel, Art Nasal is all about money. It’s a fund-raiser for the King Mango Strut.

So far, they have raised only $5.00 this year. “We made that last week when we sold a Nasal poster”, said this year’s Strut organizer, Glenn Terry.

I ran into artist, Theresa Callouri the other day. She is the creator of the Art Nasal poster which features her with her finger up her nose. It will be on sale at the event for those so inclined.

Theresa says it's a free-for-all at Art Nasal -- she will draw anything for $2.00. She says it's a "live art happening," something like they had in the 1960s. Just show up and see what happens, anything may.

Non-artist Kathy Fleishman will be doing bad portraits for $1.00.

This year's Strut t-shirt will be unveiled, too. It is a take off of this year’s parade theme, “Do the Mangobama!” The Mangobama is a dance and for $1.00 they will teach it to you that night at the Nasal event. We showed a photo of the t-shirt design here. It's quite nice actually and sure to be a collector's item in light of the past political season.

Raffle tickets are also on sale. The big prize is a cruise on Royal Caribbean.

Again, all proceeds help pay for the Grove’s greatest event, the 27th annual King Mango Strut, which is Sunday, December 28 this year.

The Sailing Club and their month-to-month lease

The Coconut Grove Sailing Club is 66 years old and presently only has a month-to-month lease. At last night's meeting, Waterfront Advisory Board chairman, Stuard Sorg, suggested that they want a yearly or multiple year lease.

One reason they don't have a lease is because if they had a lease, the property would have to go out for bid. It's quite an involved process involving appraisals and fair market property assessments, etc. and anyone could then come in and grab the space.

One problem with the Advisory Board is that they don't set up agendas and no one knows what is going on and what is coming up for review. It was suggested that members of the Sailing Club show up at a future meeting to discuss the lease.

A reader Jon sent me this photo from his cell phone.

He was thrilled that he left his bike in front of CocoWalk, stopped in at Starbucks and then had the bike there in one piece when he got back.

It's a shame that you have to pray that your bike is there and in one piece when you get back. But I think things are ok now at CocoWalk.

Is that the new bike rack?

Local author to discuss new Kennedy book at The Bookstore

Local PBS emmy winning producer and author Linda Corley will be discussing and signing her new book "The Kennedy Family Album: Personal Photos of America's First Family," at The Bookstore in the Grove (3399 Virginia Street) on December 11.

The book is a collection of photos of the Kennedy family during family celebrations, on vacations, and more taken by Palm Beach celebrity/UPI photographer Bob Davidoff. Senator Ted Kennedy wrote the foreword for the book and has given his heartfelt blessing to the completed work. Linda was featured author at the Miami Book Fair and has been on a national book tour.

The legendary Davidoff, who died in 2004, was a fixture in the Kennedy Florida household, and many of his rare photographs eventually landed in the personal scrapbooks of the Kennedys, and are still treasured by members of the family today.

FYI Sailfish Kickoff starts December 11

The FYI (Florida Yachts International) Sailfish Kickoff is December 11 to 14 this year at Monty's.

Two years ago, 400 sailfish were caught in one day -- an average of over six fish per boat.

Changes this year include:

1) More Prizes and Categories -- They increased the prize pool by $5000 and also split up the Open Class into Center Consoles and Sport Fish.

2) Center Console (Outboard) and Sportfish (Inboard) Classes -- You will now fish against teams in similar boats. There are a few exceptions to this designation.

3) Atlantico Billfish Championship -- They have a new title sponsor for the Billfish Championship Series, Ron Atlantico.

4) Fun Fish Fortune -- This used to be a winner take all calcutta. This year they split up the calcutta money into four. This will pay the top fish in each of the four species: dolphin, tuna, wahoo, and kingfish.

5) Amateur Cut-Off Raised to $5,000 -- They made it a little easier to qualify as an Amateur team. This year the limit had been almost doubled to $5,000.

If you like him then you shoulda put a ring on him

Word on the street is that some folks in the Grove would like County Commissioner Carlos Gimenez to run for Miami Mayor when Manny Diaz is gone. I am told he is on the fence on this issue and just needs a little nudge.

So far Tomas Regalado and perhaps Joe Sanchez would be the nominees.

Any thoughts?

We have a winner of the Monopoly game

We had many correct entries in the Coconut Grove Contest for the Miami and the Beaches Monopoly game. Out of the correct entries, we drew one name and Sandra, from Coconut Grove won.

Congrats, Sandra.

The question was: "Which local Coconut Grove organization is celebrating their 60th anniversary this year?"

The correct answer was Coconut Grove Cares. We had posted that story here last week. Their anniversary party is December 13 at the Barnyard Community Center (3870 Washington Ave.) from noon to 3:00 pm.

Milam's market is the worst store on the planet

I went to Publix yesterday but it was so crowded with Thanksgiving shoppers that I couldn't get a parking spot, so I went to Milam's.

Milam's never changes. It's dirty and overpriced. It reminds me of those dingy grocery stores my mother went to when we were kids in Brooklyn.

The food at Milams is double the price of all the other stores and the quality is the worst. One lady and I stared at the meat for a good 20 minutes, both trying to find something that wasn't full of gristle or fat. She finally gave up and said, "I'm going to The Fresh Market." And I said, "I'll see you there."

So off we went. I got a great steak at The Fresh Market, for a fraction of what Milam's charges. It had no gristle and very little fat and the guy behind the counter went out of his way to be sure I had a good steak. At Milam's the guys behind the meat counter are usually yelling back and forth to each other, ignoring the customers. If you stand there, you can hear about their recent fishing trips or what they plan to do over the weekend, they like to yell at the top of their lungs across the floor, forgetting that there are customers there who don't give a crap about their weekend plans.

At The Fresh Market, I got a panini, a bunch of fruits and vegetables and juice, the iced tea that I like (which is the same brand at Milam's but only cheaper at The Fresh Market), and the best part was that the creepy lady who I don't like wasn't working. So it ended up being a great shopping trip.

I know Milam's has a new store in the works, so I am anxious to see how that goes. But remember, you can put a tuxedo on a monkey, but it's still a monkey.

Waterfront Advisory Board likes "Burn Notice," well most do

At last night's Waterfront Advisory Board meeting, chairman Stuart Sorg brought up "Burn Notice," even though it was not on the agenda.

His feeling was that there should not be a problem with allowing "Burn Notice" to stay and complete filming. He said, like everything else, the City will probably not move right away on the Expo Center demolition and they would be asking "Burn Notice" to vacate and then have the center just sit there empty.

Apparently, others agree on the City side, they are now changing the lease to allow "Burn Notice" to stay through August 2009, rather than early July, when the City wanted them out. The new lease for the Expo Center is $20,000 per month, which will begin when they return to start filming in February or March 2009. This will allow them to complete season three fully at the Expo Center.

The rumor is that "Burn Notice" is going to move to Louisiana after that (for season four) because they received lots of incentive money from the state of Louisiana and we are demolishing their home.

"We got played as chumps one more time until they found a better deal [in Louisiana]," was the feeling of Jack King, a member of the Waterfront Advisory Board. He was the only one present on the board last night, who was against allowing them to stay until the third season is completed in August 2009. The rest of the board voted to allow them to stay, although ultimately, the City is the one making that decision.

Waterfront Advisory Board at odds over Grove Harbour

At tonight's Watefront Advisory Board meeting, Jack King, member of the Board, felt that the Waterfront Masterplan is changing too much and that phases can change order, but the plans should not. He called it "cherry picking" and he was concerned about the Grove Harbour Marina project and wanted to know exactly what is being done and why did it all come up out of the blue.

He was quite upset about historical buildings being torn down (I think he was referring to the current dockmaster's office). Board chairman, Stuart Sorg said he was ready to tear the old thing down now, which got Jack pretty upset. Jack said if that was the case he would come and tear Stuart's house down next since he didn't care about historical buildings in Miami. Then Jack stormed off the dais.

Basil in the Grove is the place for perfectly prepared food

salad2
Basil in the Grove (3301 Grand Avenue) has to be one of the biggest secrets in the Grove. I know I have written about them before, but I am so addicted to their food, I just thought I would mention them again. Keep in mind, they are under new ownership, so many of you may have visited in the past, but this is a new place, with a new menu.

This is their spectacular salad. There is something special about the salad or the dressing, or both. Served with their freshly-baked puffy cheese bread, it's a meal in itself. You really don't need anything else, although I highly recommend the Ginger Soy Talapia, which totally compliments the salad and bread. It's a light meal that you'll enjoy. Lately I have been getting the Orange Salmon with broccoli. (You can see photos of the Talapia and Salmon here).

The food is fresh, healthy and tasty and there is plenty of parking. I almost feel that the people who eat there are in on a special secret and when I see all the happy diners, I just smile to myself and think these people really do know quality when it comes to food. Others go to trendy places to see and be seen, but the people who eat at Basil are there for the food.

They are open from 11 am every day (except Sunday) and you should try it out.

The new owners are low key and friendly. I would say that Roman and his staff go out of their way to make you feel at home, but they aren't going out of their way, they are just like that -- very laid back and comfortable to be around. You feel as if you are in their own home when you are there. They'll remember your name, what you like to eat and drink and they treat you like long lost friends. I'll pop my head in and say, "I'll take my usual," and run out to the post office or something and when I come back, there is "my usual" waiting for me, perfectly prepared.

But again it's the food. Every person that I have ever sent there has been addicted to their food and keeps going back. Try it. Today. They'll deliver in the Center Grove, if you can't make it out today, call them at: 305-444-4848.

I stopped by Le P'tit Paris today for breakfast

Stopped by for breakfast at Le P'tit Paris today. What I like about Le P'tit is that you can usually find a friend or two there at any given time. Usually at breakfast, a lot of the business owners from Commodore Plaza can be found there. But if you sit there long enough you'll see friends and neighbors pop up. Stop by, sit down, enjoy and feel the Grove ambiance.

They tell me that they closed yesterday for a spring winter cleaning. The closed up the brick oven since they don't use it and they just did a thorough scrubbing of the whole place. But they're open now and ready for you.

A letter from a reader . . .

"We are always hearing of motorists and cyclists claiming they received a raw deal from our local police, so I want to share with you a recent experience of mine. A week or so ago, I was a victim of a case of road rage. I have been riding a bike for over sixty years and I guess I am fortunate that this was the first time I have actually been physically assaulted by a motorist.

"The Coconut Grove police arrived in minutes and, even though the two young motorists who attacked me are well connected in town, once the police assessed the situation they promptly arrested the driver and wasted no time in getting medical assistance for me. These officers exuded professionalism throughout; they were courteous and helpful to everyone involved.

"The police have a tough job here in the Miami area and I think we need to remember that when we next think we are being hard done by. I want to especially thank Officers Ryan, Britt, and Lieutenant Medina for the help and professionalism they showed throughout this stressful incident. "

Harry Emilio Gottlieb caught this scene early this morning on Bird Avenue. The Village Council was talking about burying phone lines, so then the birds may have nowhere to go.

But Harry sent me a list of plagues we have in the Grove these days. His word, "Plagues."

Peacocks, iguanas, raccoons, possums, some non-District 2 Commissioners, Mercy Hospital, Jorge Perez, Natoma Homeowners Association, Bay Heights Homeowners Association (they are both sell-outs and will do anything for a buck), post office signs, graffiti, missing pavers, 80 cent homeless guy, and now black birds.

I agree with most of Harry's list, but I like the peacocks, iguanas and the black birds.

Grove restaurant news . . .

Le P'tit Paris is closed all day today. They are "revamping" themselves and will reopen tomorrow morning at 8:00.

Could it be the scathing Herald review last week? The Herald really did a number on them. I have been there many times and never found what the Herald did. I enjoy the food, the staff and the ambiance. I won't even link the review here because it was so nasty and uncalled for.

I enjoy the mussels there, the reviewer hated the sauce. I actually have ordered extra bread to dip in the sauce because I liked it so much. Maybe I just hit it on good days. Who knows.

Maybe the Herald reviewer hit them on a bad day. We'll see what's new when they reopen tomorrow.

Have breakfast and meet an established artist at the same time

art
Here's a new first for the Grove -- "Breakfast with the Artists" -- a new series starting Tuesday, December 2 at Focaccia Rustica (3111 Grand Avenue).

The first artist up is Betty Ann Pober, shown here, left, hanging her art with AnnaMaria Windisch-Hunt (who actually looks like Wilma Flintstone in this photo).

Betty Ann is the first artist in the series. Basically you just have breakfast at Focaccia and an established artist from our area is on hand to discuss their work. It's informal and not a lecture. The artist is just there to meet if you wish to. Betty Ann is very easy to speak with, she's very sweet and low key and will remind you of a good friend.

The art is for sale, probably for a three week period, when a new artist's work will take over. Betty Ann's work is there now.

The works are small pieces at reasonable prices. Actually a great idea for one-of-a-kind holiday gifts.

Betty Ann's work consists of whimsical sayings mostly on women's issues, like love and dating and family. That's something unusual that would make a great gift.

Betty Ann will be there at 8 am, December 2. Other artists in the series are Jeffrey Passage, Hans Feyerabend, AnnaMaria and more. The art is hanging there all the time, so you may go by and enjoy it at any time.

Cleaning up the shoreline in Kennedy Park

The Kennedy Park "mangrove" clean-up project is ready to begin. The final step was getting final approval from the Village Council.

At Thursday's Village Council meeting, Village Council member Lilliana Dones was concerned about the mangroves and cleaning out of the foliage along the shoreline behind Kennedy Park. She was assured that the workers would take her along for the preliminary walk through and decide what stays and what goes, allowing the native species to flourish, removing the invasive growth.

Most Australian pines will stay, as a "fair compromise," even though they are not native and usually removed from many areas in the county. The reason they will stay is because they are large trees and they are currently giving shade to the park and Grove residents tend to love them. The Village Council agreed to allow Lilliana Dones and Jim McMaster (from Treeman Trust) to decide which trees stay, and which trees go.

The Australian pines that are inside the mangrove thickets will be removed, which will open up the view to the bay.

A little Village gossip . . .

AnnaMaria and I walked over to the Bookstore to get some coffee this morning and just as I said, "I wonder how Felice is doing, I know she's been sick," there popped up Felice!

We were thrilled to see her back. Tonight was to be the Bookstore's one year anniversary celebration but that is postponed until next week. But the great news was seeing Felice back where she belongs.

I was at the gym across the street from The Bookstore a while later and someone came up behind me singing in my ear. It was ZuZu! Remember ZuZu from the hair salon and women's gym? He works out at the Shaq 24 Hour Fitness gym sometimes and he now owns a new gym called 804 Fitness, off of Sunset Drive in South Miami.

I saw Dave Collins' car parked on the street, so I had to run over to the BIC (BID?) office and congratulate him on his BID success yesterday. I had pictured him with champagne and sure enough he said that was the case. Antoinette Baldwin and Nathan Kurland were the first to pop the corks the second the count was completed and the party began.

He says it was an easy count, they saw one big pile of paper growing that signified "yes" and a shorter pile that signified "no." The official total will be in on Monday.

I stopped by the Farmer's Market, even though I hate their prices. But I'm addicted to their coconut water, so I pay the price. It's mobbed as usual. Sunny days bring out the organic food shoppers, rainy days are better for those who don't like crowds -- the organic shoppers don't shop at the Farmer's Market when it rains. Interesting. There is some weird paradox about organic, rain and the healthy organic people avoiding the rain, but I can't put it together in my head yet.

I'm off to Basil in the Grove for lunch. See you there . . .

Going Green with little Green Driving Machines

green2
Peter and Odalys Kilissanly have a new "green" company, right up the block on US1. I am usually against the many golf carts I have seen lately up and down the streets of the Grove, mostly because they don't follow traffic laws. I even see one parked on the sidewalk often near The Bookstore. Is that legal?

But the Kilissanly's "Green Driving Machines" at European Automotive LLC at 3850 S. Dixie Highway, seem to be more user friendly and street friendly.

The little green (actually colorful) machines are electric, save gasoline, are street legal and are environmentally friendly. While they are not highway safe, they are suitable for small villages like the Grove. Some models seat six, some as many as 11 or 14!

To charge them up, you just plug the vehicle into any regular outlet. Prices vary depending on the model and style and go from about $10,000 to $18,000.

Coconut Grove BID passes late this afternoon

The Coconut Grove Business Improvement District (BID) has been passed by a vote of 165 to 99 among the 264 eligible voters.

The voting ended at 5:00 pm today and the count was conducted immediately thereafter.
At this point, the tally is "unofficial", with official paperwork certifying the result to follow on Monday.

Is the City trying to slip in traffic calming devices unannounced?

At the Village Council meeting last night, Jim McMaster (from Treeman Trust, but speaking as a private citizen) was concerned about the City "secretly" installing traffic circles, diverters and street closings on Grove streets without going through the proper balloting process needed -- asking all the neighbors for their votes.

Jim's concern is that traffic is being diverted through the neighborhoods from US 1 and other major streets. The City has plans to install diverters around Virginia Street and the 30th Court and Bridgeport Avenue area.

Kumquat Avenue, Loquat Avenue and other areas in the South Grove also have plans for "humps" that would slow down traffic.

The City claims that it is too expensive to send out notices, but residents are concerned about all these nonsense traffic diversions, just because one or two neighbors request them. On problem with the certified letters that do go out is that the mail carriers don't deliver them on time. They have so many, that they deliver them when they have time, which could hurt in cases where residents don't get the notices in time for public forums.

The Village Council will ask the City for a public forum in any case, before they proceed with any work on these street projects.

Changes coming to the Village Council?

The Village Council is talking about changes. They are concerned about one member that misses too many meetings and want to possibly replace that person. This was discussed at last night's Village Council meeting.

The Council is also considering adding another seat to the council to have another Village West member. While Lottie Person, a council member from Village West, wants another African American on the council, Council member Gary Hecht brought up the thought that a member from Village West would be a great idea, but it should not have to be an African American, it should just be a member of Village West who is qualified for the post.

Lottie was adamant about it being an African American.

One problem is that they would like to not have an even number of members for voting reasons. So they may remove the member who has not been attending meetings and make that a Village West seat.

The discussion will continue at their next meeting.

Speaking of the Village Council, Felice Dubin has been ill and that is why she was not there last night. Felice is one of my favorite people. I wish her well and a speedy recovery. (She is not the member they were speaking about last night).

Michelle Niemeyer's side of the story

Here is Michelle Niemeyer's side of the story, responding to activist Grace Solares' letter in response to Michelle's first letter, in regard to Michelle's support of Comm. Joe Sanchez for Miami Mayor. Got it?

Grace,

May I call you Grace? Those who know me understand that I never stand on formalities, except with judges, whom I address as “Your Honor.” Just as I call our District 2 Commissioner Marc, I call Joe “Joe” and I call your candidate “Tomás,” the City Manager “Pete,” and my fellow Village Council members by their first names on the dais. I find people who do not hide behind the formality of their titles to be more open to discourse on an equal footing. Joe is one of those people.

I respect the fact that you spend a great deal of your time involved in community activities, as I do. I also respect your right to have opinions that differ from mine. We don’t all have to agree all the time. There are some major policy issues that distinguish Joe from Tomás, and people will have the opportunity to choose the candidate who best represents their vision for our city’s future. We have major issues to address: a stagnant economy, lack of affordable housing, transportation gridlock, and a need for tree canopy and more usable park space, among other things.

As far as Little Havana goes, I have never held myself out as an expert on that area, but it is close to where I live and yes, Grace, I do know how to find it. Some of my friends grew up there. Years ago I volunteered as a mentor to a high school student there. Since I moved to Miami, I have seen improvements in the residential neighborhoods in that area and I am aware that SW 8th Street has found a new life, families have returned to that historic neighborhood, and investment is flowing in an area that was stagnant a decade ago before Joe took office.

As far as the Grove goes, it is inaccurate for you to claim that every controversial development has been unanimously opposed by neighbors. The Grove has always been a place of activism and heated civic debate. As a Grove resident, I have seen powerful and emotional arguments on both sides of every controversial issue, and for everyone who participates in that debate there are another hundred people who do not and whose views are often not reflected by our most adamant activists. Joe moved for approval of the Mercy project on the condition that there would be a 25% reduction in height and scale. In case you were unaware, that project was supported by the Village Council and neighboring homeowners’ groups before it went to the Commission. Home Depot, to my knowledge, never actually came up for a vote before the Commission. A proposed NCD-3 cap on the size of retail stores was passed, which eliminated the possibility of big box stores in the Grove, and Joe was part of the unanimous vote that passed it. The Grovener was supported by the Civic Club, generally the Grove’s most conservative organization where development is concerned, as well as other Grove organizations.

Joe is open, honest, and proud of a proven track record of initiatives that have produced meaningful results. He votes for what he believes is right for the entire City for today and for the future. I know I will join the people of Miami in voting for Joe Sanchez – the candidate who votes with the next generation in mind, not the next election.

Sincerely,
Michelle Niemeyer

Here is Michelle Niemeyer's original letter

This is the letter that Michelle sent out. The poll was actually removed because someone was spiking it and voting non-stop for Joe Sanchez, when in reality, it appeared that Tomas Regalado was winning.

It's amazing that Michelle even has to involve the non-Spanish speakers -- those who don't even read the Diario to vote in their poll. Reminds me of when people are bussed in to Commission meetings, like with yellow shirts, to push for an issue that most don't want.

Here is her original letter, that Grace Solares was responding to below.

The following link goes to a Spanish Language newspaper, Diario Las Americas. If you scroll down the left margin you will find a poll that allows you to choose between Joe Sanchez and Tomas Regalado. For those of you who are not Spanish speakers, the poll asks people to say who they would want to be appointed mayor if Manny Diaz is appointed to a position in the Obama Administration. I have told some of you I have agreed to coordinate Joe's campaign efforts in Coconut Grove, so I think you can guess who I voted for. Please click the link and vote. Don't let the Grove's opinion be left out of this poll, and please feel free to forward this e-mail to people you know (especially the ones who support Joe J).

I am supporting Joe because in my experience he listens and does what he believes is the best thing for the residents of the City and his district. We may not always agree but it is clear that he makes a serious effort to do the right thing. He doesn't make promises he can't keep but does do what he can to help when it is needed and is the right thing to do. I like that Joe proactively works to solve problems and improve our community.

He is not just a voice for the negative. He has done wonderful things in his district in his 10 years as the City Commissioner for District 3, including building affordable housing, cleaning up neighborhoods, revitalizing Little Havana, developing parks and building a community gym. In the last year he has turned around the Downtown Development Authority which is starting to show results (if you've been downtown lately you've seen improvements).

Please click the link and vote when you get this e-mail:
diariolasamericas.com/channel.php?cha=33 [Editor's note: The link was removed]

Thank you for taking the time. If you would like to be part of the effort to get Joe Sanchez elected as the next mayor of the City of Miami, please respond to this e-mail or call me at 305-[number removed].

Sincerely
Michelle Niemeyer

"If you wish to continue being kicked in the teeth then vote for Joe Sanchez for Mayor of Miami" -- Grace Solares

The following letter came from activist Grace Solares.

Apparently Cocoanut Grove Village Council head Michelle Niemeyer is pushing for Comm. Joe Sanchez as the next Mayor of Miami over Comm. Tomas Regalado.

While I like Michelle Niemeyer a lot, I honestly disagree with almost everything she has ever done on the Village Council and other Grove-related committees. She never seems to side with Grove residents and now she is pushing for someone who has never been on our side. Should Michelle even be publicly pushing for anyone since she heads the Village Council?

In my view, Tomas Regalado has voted pro-Grove on almost every issue. I don't think I have ever seen Joe Sanchez ever take a pro-Grove stance on anything. Whenever I have seen Joe Sanchez at Grove events, I am usually puzzled as to why he is there since he has done so much with Mayor Manny Diaz and various other City Commissioners to destroy quality of life for Grove residents.

I am publishing Ms. Solares' letter here and I ask that Michelle please send me a letter in response and I will publish that.

Here is the letter Ms. Solares sent to "Friends of Michelle Niemeyer (referring to the way Michelle addressed her letter to voters):

I am in receipt of a copy of an email Ms. Niemeyer sent, addressed as her "Friends," in which she advises she has agreed to coordinate "Joe Sanchez" campaign efforts in Coconut Grove for his candidacy for Mayor of the City of Miami.

Ms. Niemeyer then goes on to tell you the things about "Joe" (as she rather intimately calls him) she believes are reasons why you should vote for "Joe."

I will tell you why you should not. First and foremost, you Grovites have never had a "friend" nor a commissioner that "listens," in Joe Sanchez.

Do you remember the Grovenor? I remember the Grove fighting against the Grovenor. Did Sanchez hear you in your opposition? No, he did not. He voted "Yes" for that incredibly huge project.

Do you remember Home Depot? I remember the Grove fighting against Home Depot. Did Sanchez hear you in your opposition? No, he did not. He voted "Yes" for Home Depot.

Do you remember Mercy Hospital/Related Project? I remember the Grove joining many in the fight against it. Did Sanchez hear you? No, he did not. He voted "Yes" for the Mercy Project.

And, I could go on and on about all the many "Yes" votes that Joe Sanchez has cast against the residents of the City and in favor of the big developers. Ms. Niemeyer knows nothing, nothing, about the residents' battles against bad projects that have killed the quality of life of the residents of the City, and that Joe Sanchez has been an integral and indispensable part of those "yes" votes that have caused havoc in the single family residential areas.

And, oh yes, how she tells you about the wonderful things he has done in Little Havana. I bet you she does not even know how to find Little Havana. Little Havana has suffered a significant gentrification in the past 8 years. Old structures, that even though not designated as historical were indeed that (because of the constructions years being in the late 20s, 30s early 40s) were demolished.

These historical buildings, that housed families with low and limited income, were razed to give rise to new and bigger building projects, totally unaffordable by the ones displaced. Yes, this was Joe Sanchez with his "Yes" votes. I have dozens and dozens of horror stories to combat each and every of Ms. Niemeyer's reasons why you should vote for Joe Sanchez, however, I have extended myself too much and do not wish take any more of your time.

I leave you with one thought: if you wish the City of Miami Administration to continue kicking the residents in the teeth, then you should vote for Joe Sanchez; if you wish the City of Miami Administration to continue siding with the big developers, then you should vote for Joe Sanchez; if you wish the City of Miami Administration to only give you two minutes to speak on your issues after having waited an entire day to address the Commission, then you vote for Joe Sanchez; if you wish the City of Miami Administration to continue to scheduling planning and zoning items during working ours so as to prevent you from attending, then you should vote for Joe Sanchez; if you wish the City of Miami Administration to continue to be ran by Manny Diaz after he is gone, then you vote for Joe Sanchez.

If you do not want any one of the foregoing, then you must vote for the People's Mayor, Tomas Regalado.

Respectfully,
Grace Solares

I find the City to be spiteful and stupid

Miami Today is reporting that "Burn Notice" could be on it's last legs here in the Grove -- probably here in Miami.

The City insists on demolishing the Expo Center, even though "Burn Notice" brings in millions of dollars to the economy in these terrible times and even though the free exposure it gives to Coconut Grove and Miami is incalculable.

I just don't get our City leaders sometimes. They are on the verge of agreeing to the construction of an office building on the waterfront even though it clashes with the Waterfront Master Plan and will block water views and yet they want to kill a hit tv-show (with millions of weekly viewers) that is bringing in money ($20 million per season) and tourists (it's very popular in this country and Europe) because that clashes with the Master Plan and now blocks the water views. Makes no sense.

Why do we need to kill this for an empty hole in the ground? Presently there is no money to build the Master Plan park or even pay for the demolition of the Expo Center.

Some marching group's suggested for the Strut

Spoiler alert:

Here are some groups suggested for this year's King Mango Strut, to be held December 28. If you don't want to know what they are (and some are questionable in my head, but they always seem to work out in the end), please don't read further.

1) The Marching Joes (Joe the Plumber, Joe six-pack, etc.)
2) The local Barack Obama look-alike struttin' his stuff
3) People who are either crazy or talking on cell phones that you can't see
4) The infamous Coconut Grove peacocks followed by our local
5) Peacock huntsmen
6) Mormon Elder Father Peer and his 16 wives under 16 wearing prairie dresses
7) OJ finally goes off to jail (he STAYS in Vegas!)
8) The Sarah Palin marching Brigade. They hold binoculars saying "I can see Cuba from here!"
9) Michael Phelps as a very buff medal wearing vampire
10) Chinese tainted milk joke
11) Numerical countdown of the hours and minutes until George W is gone.

They are still looking for participants with their own group idea, and clearly they need some good ones, so think about getting a group together and go to the next meeting at Sammy C's on Tuesday, Nov. 25.

Loud crowd of Mangoheads meets at Sammy C's

It was a loud crowd last night at Sammy C's for the King Mango Strut meeting. Over 50 Mangoheads attended.

The theme this year is "Doin' the Mangobama." That's Francesca Terry holding up the mock-up of the t-shirt, which should be available in early December. At right is Peer Everett, board member and Glenn Terry, artistic director.

The main gist of last night's meeting was coming up with raffle prizes. Tony Scornavacca was the first to offer up two tickets to a Heat game. A gourmet dinner for two was offered by someone. The annual cruise on Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, is again part of the raffle, thanks to Antoinette Baldwin, parade organizer, who was not present last night.

They are still awaiting former School Head Rudy Crew's decision on being the Grand Marshall. Others being considered are Paul Naron, Iggy Pop, and Batman, the local Olympic runner. Part of the Strut this year will be local Olympians who were in China this past summer.

The Village Council is not the City Commission

It is apparent by the comments we get here, that some of you don't know the difference between the Village Council and the City Commission. The Village Council meets this Thursday. The City Commission met last week.

The Cocoanut Grove Village Council (Cocoanut is spelled the old-fashioned way) is an elected body of representatives who work to bring information as a liaison between Coconut Grove and the City of Miami and the City Commission which is an elected body of representatives who work for the entire city, including the Grove. City Commission only consists of one "Grove Commissioner," Marc Sarnoff, who is our district commissioner.

The Village Council consists of only Coconut Grove representatives and only deals with Coconut Grove issues, while the City Commission deals with all of Miami.

And therein lies the rub -- the City Commission does not usually have the best interests of the Grove in mind when making their decisions. While they have their offices at City Hall, which happens to be in Coconut Grove, the City Commission seems to be ad odds with what the Grove residents desire on a regular basis.

That's where the Village Council comes in. They try to smoothly sway the City Commission into doing what the Grove citizens' desire.

Oddly enough, they both share the same chambers at City Hall (on different times, of course) and they both have their meetings televised on cable channel 77 or streamed
here.

I call it California weather

sunny
The Grove is crowded today and there isn't any major event going on, where last weekend we had so much going on from the art openings to the Great Grove Picnic and of course the Mad Hatter Festival.

This weekend it's just the sunny 68 degree weather. Guess we should order up more weather like this. Every restaurant is full, CocoWalk and Mayfair are buzzing, the parks are full of people and dogs, too. People are hanging outside the bookstore reading and visiting and playing music and many are just strolling the streets.

And I've seen so many boats on the bay, especially sail boats. I went to the gym and it was dead. Guess everyone wants to be outside today. I don't blame them a bit.

It's incredible seeing all of the live theater that is going on around South Florida and the Grove Playhouse sits dormant. I know most people like to blame the patrons for not showing up, but I blame the incompetent board of directors who ran the place into the ground.

Keep your eyes and ears open. Things are stirring. I know for a fact that many professionals are interested in the Playhouse, and the only thing holding them back is the bitter Board of Directors. The Governor needs to release this Bitter Board and let the show(s) go on.

There were coats, hats, jewelry, all sorts of clothing, including menswear.

I had to laugh at all the emails I am getting lately about bikers rights and opening up the waterfront and bike paths for them and so on.

I don't think I have ever seen a biker on any bike paths or waterfront, they are usually five deep blocking traffic on most weekends, daring cars to go around them. We all need to share the road, bikers have rights, but so do motor vehicle drivers.

I took this photo the other day and this seems to be the way it should be -- bikers to the right, and room for cars to the left. Below you can see the photos that Harry Emilio Gottlieb took this morning. While very pretty to look at, it's not so pretty when you are trying to drive on the road, too, and they commandeer the road and basically don't care if you can pass or not.

bikers1
I don't think I ever had the nerve to ride my bike in the center of the street and dare cars to go around me. I keep to the side of the road and allow them access. I guess when you put those tight spandex shorts on, it does more than squash your unmentionables, it goes right to your brain, too.

Can't we all just share the road?

Is too much green a bad thing?

I hear from one of the mail carriers at the Grove post office that they went so overboard with the new plantings that they don't really have much room for the mail trucks and employees' cars behind the post office now. They actually added trees and plants there, as well.

I got an email about the drive-thru from a friend, and I wondered about it myself -- there are no mailboxes at the drive-thru lane. You just drive in and out and there is no place to deposit mail.

One day I saw a car in the parking lot behind the dry cleaners and the UPS store and the driver was handing his mail to the parking lot attendant. I wonder if that's the way to go. Hand the mail to him and he'll bring it into the UPS store where they also end up mailing the letters.

I had forgotten how great Anokha Indian restaurant really is

anokha1

We had a delicious dinner at Anokha Indian Restaurant (3324 Virginia Street) the other night. We tried just about everything.

Their Indian beer is really good and light, too.

Loved the lamb chops, curry and tandoori dishes.

And their seafood appetizers and flat breads were a nice start to the meal.

They also accept Code 33.

Just say NO to Mayor Manny Diaz

Our Mayor Manny Diaz is being considered for a high-level post in the Obama administration. Say what? I thought Obama was such a smart guy and wanted change and wanted to do good for the country.

I thought that Obama was part of the solution these days. If he chooses Diaz, he will only be contributing to the problems of the country, not solving them. Miami has had some crazy mayors over the years, but I sort of liked the mayors, but I just could never warm up to Manny Diaz. Maybe because he never saw a developer he didn't want to suck up to and never really cared about what the tax-paying citizens wanted.

He ruined so much of Miami with over-development, so many buildings sit empty now all over the place. If it was up to him, we would have nothing but wall-to-wall buildings up and down Coconut Grove. We would look like Sunny Isles.

Diaz would probably knock down the Lincoln Memorial and maybe even the White House if he could, to give the land over to his builder and developer buddies who like to destroy history and build big no matter what anyone says.

The good news is that if Manny goes to Washington, we'll be rid of him. So that is the silver lining in the cloud. But honestly, I was so pro-Obama and now I see his first official goof -- hiring the wrong people who are bad for the country.

I stand corrected, we do have a "trolley" in the Grove

Apparently we do have a "trolley," although it is called a Grove Circulator. I have seen these little ugly things moving through the Grove, I didn't know what they were. Lilliana Dones sent me this:

Well Grape, actually we do have a Grove "trolley." It's called the Grove Circulator, (Route 249) and it trolls back and forth from the Douglas Metro Rail station, up Grand into downtown Grove, around McFarlane up S. Bayshore to City Hall then up Aviation into 27th Ave and into the Grove Metrorail station on 27th Ave. The whole thing takes about 15 minutes and during peak times it runs about every 15 minutes.

We've had this service since the same time the Gables got theirs, which was in 2002, in anticipation of Merrick Park. The thing is, the Gables got dibs on the ones that look like trolleys and we were left with the ones that look like little buses. At first it was free, but now it's 25 cents, which is still pretty good. I mean, what else can you get for 25 cents nowadays? Not even a stamp. But you can ride around the Grove. What's more, you can actually take the Grove Circulator from downtown Grove to the Douglas Metro Rail Station, get a transfer, walk across the platform and then take the Grove "Trolley" to Merrick Park, Miracle Mile or, as I did once to see my accountant, all the way to Ponce and 8th street. And back. For 25 cents. It is actually very convenient. There is a space in the front of the Circulator for putting your bike.

If we were to happen upon something like this in Berlin or Amsterdam, we would come back and write about how sorry it all is that we don't have something similar here. But we do! And I am frankly amazed that most who responded to your post did not know about the Circulator.

Imagine going from here to Miracle Mile for 25 cents! Alas, Miamians tend to equate mass transit, even with cute names such as "Trolley" or "Circulator" as "low rent." Which is too bad, really, because if we used MTA more, they may actually improve it, increase routes and run more frequently. They could extend the Circulator routes to Mercy Hospital, Vizcaya and Science Museum.

The upside of the whole economy going south is that we may actually adjust and start to live more like the Europeans, or even New Yorkers, and lose our fear of "mass transit." Which is a great thing really.

The schedule for the Cirulator is here.

Commission defers Grove Harbour project in Sarnoff's absence

Comm. Marc Sarnoff was not present for today's City Commission meeting, but he told the Commission to go ahead with the discussion and vote on the Grove Harbour Marina project.

Comm. Joe Sanchez was adamant about deferring the issue until Comm. Sarnoff returns. He didn't want to pass the issue knowing that Comm. Sarnoff was against the office building project.

Sanchez rightly felt that the district Comm. Marc Sarnoff should be present for this important issue. After all, it is his district.

Comm. Tomas Reglado wanted to discuss the issue anyway feeling that Comm. Sarnoff made his position known. Comm. Angel Gonzalez also wanted to push ahead with the issue. I am beginning to question Tomas Regaldo these days. I used to always agree with him and he always took the Grove's side on issues but now he seems very interested in seeing this office building built for some strange reason.

Pete Hernandez, the City Manager, said that Comm. Sarnoff emailed him permission to have the City Commission go ahead with the issue -- to discuss and vote. But still, this is a lack of respect for Comm. Sarnoff. This is a very important issue, he is the only one against it. Voting on the issue without him is not right.

Rightly so, the Commission voted to defer the issue until December's meeting.

I guess Comm. Sarnoff was trying to be fair to the Commission by not holding up the issue, but I think he should be fair with the district and not care about what the Commission thinks. This was too important to proceed without his input and I think he should have made that clear to the Commission and not just give them permission to vote as they pleased in his absence.

I am sure he only did that out of respect for them, not wanting to hold up the proceedings, but again, this wasn't about a traffic light or picnic permit, it is a very important issue and his presence is required.

Some nice meal deals

Focaccia Rustica (3411 Grand Avenue) is offering a good, fast breakfast for only $6.00!

The breakfast consists of two eggs, any style, toast, orange juice and American coffee.

This is eat-in only, which includes white tablecloth and linen napkins. I ran into a couple of friends there this morning partaking in the breakfast special.

They also offer soup and salad for lunch for only $8.50. The sandwich is quite large, it isn't half of a sandwich, it is more like 2/3 of a baget.

For lunch they also offer a $12.95 special which consists of soup or salad and your chose of the pasta of the day, the chicken of the day or the churrasco steak of the day, each day will be these items but prepared a different way. And dessert is the final course for this great lunch deal.

We need a free trolley system to draw business to the Grove

The Gables trolley, which is free, has apparently increased business for everyone in the Miracle Mile and Ponce de Leon area by quite a substantial amount.

The trolley picks up people at the Metrorail station on 37th Avenue and transports people to the Gables. Why not here? By the way, isn't that Metrorail station in the Grove? Are they coming to the Grove and "taking" people away?

Why can't the BID, Merchant's Association or Village Council arrange that for the Grove? Maybe this can be part of the BID assessments? The trolley must be free to get people to hop on and come to the Grove because if faced with the free Gables trolley or a paid ride to Coconut Grove, we know which people will choose. Plus a free trolley says, "We want you. Be our guest!"

How about a free trolley that picks up tourists on South Beach and brings them to and from the Grove?

According to City Commissioner Tomas Regalado, at today's City Commission meeting, advertising on the trolleys defrays costs of running a free trolley system. I would gladly have a Grapevine ad on the side of a trolley bringing people to Coconut Grove from various Metrorail and/or pick-up stops.

Where is the meter reader when you need her?

cabs
Many people have been complaining about all the parked cabs up and down Virginia Street near the Mayfair Hotel.

I'm not sure, but I think there are two spots available for them, which you see here, but on many days, there are as many as seven or eight cabs all lined up in marked metered spots. They don't feed the meters and they aren't told to move by the meter readers. Why?

The meter readers are ticketing everyone else in sight, including the Sysco and other delivery guys and even people making a quick pick up at a gallery or restaurant, but they allow the taxis to take up spots practically 24 hours a day.

The taxi drivers know they are wrong. When I ask them if they have put money in the meter, they sheepishly tell me they are about to. So they apparently know they are supposed to.

CBS casting for "The Ultimate Block Party"

This in from Lilliana Dones:

Since the Grove has already served as backdrop to Marley & Me, Burn Notice, Last Comic Standing and other shows, this one is a natural!

CBS is developing a reality TV show that will be filmed sometime next summer. They are looking for 7-10 neighboring households to participate.

I am thinking Gifford Lane, since they already have a block party with the Gifford Lane Art stroll, or even the residents on Micanopy with all the Peacock broo-haha and all the national press they have gotten on CBS this morning and the NY Times.

More info: You don't need to be "touching lots," but should be as close as possible. The families will play against each other, as it's a competition. The grand prize is "significant," but they cannot disclose it just yet. (Think Survivor, think Amazing Race!)

This will go on for 3 weeks. If you participate, you are "in the game" the entire time. It is a family friendly show, so both the challenges and the content will be appropriate for all ages. They are looking for competitive, dynamic, entertaining families. This will be a unique bonding experience for families as well as a unique community experience.

Filming will take place sometime next summer. Exact timing will be determined once the families are chosen. For more details email the casting producer Kathie Kopa at

Where is the Meter Fairy when you need her?

This is a major issue in the Grove and I really think it affects business.

This meter maid was ticketing a large Sysco 18-wheeler the other day while the guy was delivering supplies to restaurants. Rather than ask the guy to move, she wrote up her ticket like a thief in the night.

I asked her why and her response was to walk behind my car and start to write me a ticket. Perhaps she didn't speak English, which may have been the case.

If I was a visitor to the Grove, I don't think I would return after that. Of course if I was a visitor to the Grove, I would not be opening my big mouth and asking why she was giving tickets, but I just found it to be a nasty thing to do. She knew he had nowhere to park and he was just trying to get the items delivered.

The Sysco guy for once, was parked on the side of the road and not in the center of everything, where ironically, they don't hassle him. When he and others are literally blocking lanes of traffic, they are not ticketed, when they are parked on the side of the road, I guess they expect them to put money in the meter or they are ticketed.

This same meter maid started ticketing cars of people picking up work from various artists during the Mad Hatter Arts Festival. I saw this myself. They would bring their car to the artits's tent and start to lug the big piece of art into the car and this meter girl was right on their tail telling them to move or be ticketed.

Then business owners want to know why people don't return to Grove events or come to their places of business anymore.

The arrogance of the meter readers sends out bad vibes and doesn't belong in Coconut Grove. In so many parts of the state, parking is free. When is that going to catch on here? I know there is talk about free 2-hour parking for the holidays. Hope that happens. Last year merchants would validate receipts for free 2-hour parking.

Vintage Clothing and Accessories Show at Woman's Club

The Coconut Grove Woman's Club is holding The Miami Vintage Clothing and Accessories Show & Sale on Saturday and Sunday, November 15 and 16 at the Woman’s Club (2985 South Bayshore Drive).

“As one of the most fashionable cities in the world, it is no surprise that vintage is so popular here in Miami” says show founder Sheffield MacIntyre and owner of Back-In-Style.com. “What is surprising is the lack of access to vintage clothing. There are only a handful of vintage stores in the our area, and none in Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, or South Miami., all of which are very fashion conscious communities. The Miami Vintage Clothing & Accessories Show and Sale aims to make vintage clothing available to all.

“We have assembled a select group of some of the finest vintage clothing dealers in the area and beyond to raise the profile of vintage clothing in the Miami fashion scene.”

The event will feature vintage clothing and accessories from the 1920s through the 1980s from a select group of unique sellers, chosen for the quality and authenticity of their merchandise.

The Woman’s Club is sponsoring a special Preview Party on Friday, November 14 from 7:00-9:00 pm, offering attendees first selection of merchandise, as well as entertainment and complimentary food and drink. Crazy hats and food were lacking, but it was a fun weekend

I loved the Mad Hatter Arts Festival this weekend. It brings so much energy to the streets. I particularly like the tables that are set up without tents. It just seems more organic that way, as if an artist or jewelry maker just set up on the spur of the moment and spread their wares for people to buy.

But one thing -- where were all the Mad Hats this weekend?

I mean I saw art, I saw crafts, I heard music, I didn't see food, or any hats.

I was hoping to see a hot dog vendor or an Italian ices guy or gyros, but here was none of that. I think food is a big part of a festival. And I totally expected to see mad and crazy hats all over the place. But that wasn't done this year.

No one wore a mad hat. Well, actually I saw one guy set up at a table in front of HH Jewels with a black top hat and he certainly stood out. But no one else seemed to have one like in years past.

Next year, everyone should wear crazy hats and there needs to be carnival foods sold along the streets. Nothing elaborate, a hot dog vendor here and a gyro vendor there; maybe some fresh lemonade. Not too much, a few food and drink carts among the arts and crafts. And hats, lots of mad hats.

The festival is on again today, so stop over if you haven't been.

Mad Hatter 4
There was even a little drum circle, yesterday, which had extra seats available for passersby, who were more than happy to join in. It's probably there again today, on Grand Avenue, in front of the old Sophora store, near the gym.

Orange Bowl documentary premiered in Grove last night

orange-bowl
Sen. Bob Graham, filmmaker Carl Kesser, Adele Graham, Arva Moore Parks.

The film "The Orange Bowl Stadium, Remembering 70 years of Greatness," premiered last night at City Hall. It's a documentary by filmmaker Carl Kesser chronicling the Orange Bowl's 70 plus years.

In attendance at the first screening were Senator Bob Graham and wife Adele, along with ex-Dolphins, Jim Mandich, Dick Anderson, and Larry Little; also in attendance were Sue McConnell, Ron Nelson, Harry Emilio Gottlieb, Arva Moore Parks, Historian Paul George, and members of the Orange Bowl Committee including legendary Ernie Seiler, former Executive Director of the Orange Bowl.

Hopefully there will be a second screening soon. The film is destined for various film festivals as well as television, maybe the History Channel or ESPN. It's a real treat for anyone who has attended games at the Orange Bowl.
The film would make a great stocking stuffer, it may be purchased here: http://www.leadingvideo.com/ for only $14.95.

After the film, many locals went next door to Scotty's Landing for dinner and drinks.

This is her creation, I ran into
    her flitting around the Grove

She was the one flitting, I was
    walking like a man.

More than 60 women gave Richard Heisenbottle (left) a standing ovation today at the Coconut Grove Woman's Club. He is the architect who worked gratis with Dolly MacIntyre, project chair (right) on the renovation of the club.

Yesterday was their first business luncheon at the newly renovated facility.

    FedEx/Kinkos or the UPS Store?

There's a debate going on in the comments section of another post. It's about FedEx/Kinkos. So my question is this: FedEx/Kinkos or the UPS Store? They are both on Grand Avenue, not too far apart.

Why use them? Do you use them? And if so, why is FedEx/Kinko's always empty, while the UPS Store seems to have steady business?

New steakhouse opening in the Grove next weekend

Speaking of restaurants, Angelo and Maxie’s Steakhouse, the classic New York City restaurant, is set to open its second location at the Mayfair Hotel and Spa on Saturday, November 15, 2008. A grand opening is planned for November 14, for press and other invited guests.

A favorite New York City destination for 12 years has been transported to Coconut Grove by Angelo and Maxie’s owners Peter Kay and Reed Goldstein. The restaurant name comes from the song “Lullaby on Broadway” from the musical “42nd Street."

According to their press release the steakhouse is: "Reminiscent of a 1930’s Cuban sugar plantation, the diner's journey begins along hand-scrapped wide plank hardwood floors and plantation shutters that filter the tropical light onto the custom millwork walls, inlaid with mirrors that send a sparkle throughout the restaurant. A grand field stone spiral staircase leads you to the upper-level of the 220 seat, bi-level venue that houses a separate private wine tasting room that seats private parties of up to 12 people. The rich textures and colors provide masculine ambiance complimented by a feminine elegance that is seamlessly translated into the diverse American cuisine."

The hefty menu at Angelo and Maxie's provides a wide array of dishes including their famous steaks, lamb, chicken, fish and more.

Giving attitude does not help in the restaurant business

Christabelle's Quarter is now closed for lunch, only open for dinner.

There are a few Grove restaurants that need us to support them. They are hanging on by a thread. We ate at Anokha the other night and there were only two tables full.

Pisco's also needs business. Today there were only a couple of tables full for lunch.

One reason Christabelle's could be having problems is the snobby lady at the front. She looks at you with her nose up in the air and almost dares you to enter. She reminds me of the Absolutely Fabulous episode where Edina, who has gobs of money, is buying million dollar paintings at a gallery and the girl at the desk is giving her attitude.

She says something to her like, "Drop you attitude honey, you're only a shop girl." That's how I feel about the lady at Christabelle's Quarter. She's there to take reservations, yet she judges all the paying customers who actually are paying her salary.

Maddest Hat contest tonight to kick-off busy weekend

Tonight, the Mad Hatter Arts committee and local merchants are presenting a Maddest Hat contest at Ideas Restaurant (2833 Bird Avenue) from 6 to 8 pm.

The evening will kick off this weekend's fourth annual Mad Hatter Festival.

Tonight marks the return of the beloved Coconut Grove Meter Fairy, remember her? She flits around on rollerblades and puts money in expired meters. Not sure how that works with the new meter system since you have to actually get into the car to leave the parking ticket. But I guess the fairy can manage some magic.

Free Tapas and wine will be served to locals wearing their craziest hat. Food and beverages are generously being donated by Ideas Restaurant.

RSVP to info@madhatterfestival.com as there is a maximum capacity.

Who else would be dodging traffic to get a photo?

I was in the middle of the street yesterday dodging traffic to take a picture. A guy named Jorge came up to me and said, "Hi, are you Tom from the Grapevine?" I replied, "Yes, hi, how did you know?" And he said something about me being in the middle of traffic taking photos, who else would be doing that?

The crowd at Sammy C's celebrated Obama's win in style

    obama1
Barbara Pope (left) and Barbara Lange (second from left), with friends, were thrilled with the election results last night at Sammy C's. No one seemed to work harder for the Obama campaign in the Grove than these two ladies.

    obama3
Michelle Niemeyer, Kathleen Morris and Antoinette Baldwin were celebrating, too. Antoinette may have to retire her Sarah Palin personality for awhile, just like Tina Fey, although I suspect both will pop up now and then, most likely at the King Mango Strut Parade this year.

    Grove celebrates Obama's win

At 11 pm last night, I heard fireworks and shouts of joy all around the area. I guess Barb and Barb are very happy.

Carlos Lopez-Cantara, our local Grove guy, also won State Representative. And Illeana Ros-Lehtinen beat Annette Toddeo.

Election Happy Hour tonight at Sammy C's

Sammy C's (3540 Main Hwy.) is having an election Happy Hour starting at 9:00 tonight.

Their lounge has 8 tv's, a big bar and lots of comfortable couches. You news junkies can track every electoral vote and watch the newscasters talk themselves silly -- some are looking forward to seeing FOX "News" announce that Barack Obama will be the 44th President of the United States.

Sammy C's is giving everyone bailout prices -- wine and champagne is $4.50, and beer is $3.00 and cocktails $4.50.

Sammy C's did not create this event for Obama fans. A bunch of Obama supporters got together and decided to party there. They chose one of their favorite hang-out spots. Sammy C's offered drink specials. Sammy C's does not care who you voted for, you are more than welcome to come and party and enjoy the drink specials no matter who you support.

The Grapevine has not received one notice of a McCain event in the Grove in all of these many months of campaigning or we would gladly have posted it.

Restaurant news -- who is in, who is out

The new Jacobs in the Grove, on Commodore Plaza is still not open. They keep saying soon. There was problems between partners, so now the chocolate shop next door is out. That's the one thing I was looking forward to -- the chocolate/soda fountain/ice cream place. But it is no more. There's a for rent sign on the place. It was ZuZu's women's gym before plans for the chocolate shop.

The old Firkin and Friar on Commodore Plaza is now going to be just "Friar" and that should open in a few weeks. The whole place is going to be taken over again and be up and running.

There's a new Asian/nuvo cuisine place opening in the Mutiny. Atchana, who owns Siam Lotus in South Miami is opening the new place in December. No name yet.

    Election day

Grove precincts were sort of quiet so far today, maybe they'll pick up later. There seemed to be more campaigner with their signs than voters. Guess all that early voting helped.

This morning, Mayor Manny Diaz and Commissioner Marc Sarnoff were at the Museum of Science, where two precincts vote, campaigning for their candidates and perhaps voting, since they both vote in that precinct.
